SITA AUSTRALIA
E-WASTE
RECYCLING:
Advanced Resource
Recovery Program
It is estimated that in Australia
today, more than 20 million
electronic or electrical items are
no longer being used and are sitting, redundant, in offices and homes around the country.
These items are classed as e waste.
E-waste can be environmentally harmful if disposed of in landfill as these items contain toxic
and hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium and brominated fire retardants. Items
containing these substances are damaging to the environment and should not be sent to
landfill. If disposed of correctly, the recyclable components can be recovered for reuse and
hazardous materials can be treated appropriately.
A national collection and recycling scheme for televisions, computers and computer products is
currently in effect under the Product Stewardship Legislation.

Acceptance Criteria
E-waste generally includes any product with an electric cord or battery.
Electronic gadgets that we collect as part of our e-waste collection service includes:
Televisions
Desktop computers and laptops
Computer keyboards
Scanners
Printers
Fax machines
What happens after we've collected your e-waste?
E-waste products contain a variety of material that can be collected for resource recovery.
Materials that are recovered for reuse include gold, heavy metals, mixed plastics and glass from
screens.
The first step in the e-waste recycling process is usually a manual sort of the items, so it is
important to exclude unsafe and/or hazardous material from your e-waste items as it can be
dangerous to our employees, contaminate other items or damage sorting equipment.
Once the items have been sorted and separated into their specific streams, they are then sent
to recyclers or manufacturers for reprocessing into new products.
