Virginia Hospital Center Earns Magnet ® Hospital Accreditation

Virginia Hospital Center’s recently upgraded Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a state-of-the-facility providing top-notch care for very ill or premature babies. The NICU expansion, made possible by a generous donation from Frank Sands, Sr. and his family in honor of his wife Marjorie, increased the Hospital’s capacity to care for full-term, ill babies, prema-ture infants, and micro-premature infants who are born before 29 weeks gestation or weigh less than three pounds. Premature infants, like Sofia Jagasia, are often hospitalized for months. Born at 30 weeks gestation and weighing 3 pounds, 1 ounce at birth, Sofia required a NICU stay for 43 days. Now home, Sofia is the size of an average newborn at the time of her due date and is growing and thriving. “The Marjorie Sands NICU is a place where families begin and fam-ilies grow,” said her mother, Sonal Jagasia. “The care at Virginia Hospital Center was incredible, from Sofia’s delivery to her transition to the NICU, her care was seamless,” she said. “The NICU staff taught us new things every day about how to care for Sophia to prepare us for providing the special care she would need at home.” Virginia Hospital Center has seen a dramatic and sustained increase in births and now has the second-highest delivery volume in Virginia. In 2013, there were more than 5,600 babies born at the Hospital and 700 NICU admissions. The Sands’ family donation was used to further cultivate a nurturing NICU environment that fulfills the needs of premature babies and their families. The NICU is managed by the neonatology team of physicians from Children’s National Medical Center and is designated as a Level IIIB facility by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Board-certified neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners and other highly-qualified nurses and developmental specialists work collaboratively with parents to optimize the care these delicate patients receive. n

Friends of Nursing is a vibrant program that provides many opportunities and support to nurses and is entirely funded by donor support. Ana Adriazola’s (RN) experience is a prime example of what the Friends of Nursing program can do for a nurse.

Ana graduated George Mason University with a degree in Biology in 2008. She considered graduate school but wanted firsthand experience in the medical field, so she began as a receptionist on the oncology unit (8A). This experience ignited

her passion for patient care. Ana began full-time study at Marymount while continuing to work at Virginia Hospital Center. In 2010, she received a Friends of

Nursing scholarship which helped pay for the remainder of her education. Upon graduation, Ana became a registered nurse on 8A and achieved Advanced Certification in Oncology Nursing in 2013. During the 2014 Friends of Nursing Awards Ceremony, Ana was

a recipient of a Clinical Excellence Award, nominated by her colleagues for her leadership and dedication. Back in nursing school, Ana is working towards her doctorate. Ana credits the Friends of Nursing program for its role in her

success. “Thank you to the donors who support Friends of Nursing. Nursing can be a difficult job, so knowing that the community supports nurses is a wonderful gift,” Ana said. n

On May 14, at the home of Ellen Sher, the Virginia Hospital Center Women’s Health and Empowerment

Circle (WHEC) hosted its first event, Margaritas and Mammograms. WHEC is comprised of dedicated women

who value community and wish to ensure that the best medical care is available in our community. More than 60 women gathered for this festive evening of fellowship

and conversation about women’s health. WHEC engages and inspires women to support medical excellence at Virginia Hospital Center. Members of WHEC contribute $1,000 annually or pledge $5,000 over five years. Each year, WHEC picks a women’s or

children’s health project or initiative in the Hospital to support. For 2014, WHEC is focusing their efforts on raising money for mammography equipment upgrades in the Reinsch Pierce Family Center for Breast Health.

40 Acts of Kindness

As Angela Neeb’s 40th birthday approached, she was inspired by the idea of performing acts of kindness, rather than having a large celebration. Angela’s large circle of family and friends joined her in a series of activities to help the community, make someone’s day, or simply bring a smile to someone’s face. The beneficiaries of these many act of kindness included Virginia Hospital Center and Arlington Pediatric Center (APC). Angela and her team brought mobiles for the Marjorie Sands Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), made baked good for NICU nurses, and care pack-ages for the NICU waiting room. They also brought books to children at Arlington Pediatric Center. “I am overwhelmed, appreciative, and thankful for everyone that was involved,” said Angela of her team of more than 50 volunteers. “A little act of kindness goes a long way.” n

Women’s Health and Empowerment Circle Hosts Kick-Off Event A Lifeline to At-Risk and In Need Citizens

Now in its fifth year of service to our community, the Lifeline Assistance Fund provides a subsidy for a subscription for Lifeline to low-income and at risk individ-uals to help them remain in their homes with confidence and safety. Lifeline is a wearable technology that provides immediate help in a fall or emergency, or a connection to other appropriate assistance. Since starting the program, the Life-line Assistance Fund has helped 60 seniors and disabled individuals live at home safely. With the support of Galen Society members, Virginia Hospital Center has built a nationally-recognized urology program serving patients like Phil Harrick. Philanthropy directly supports the acquisition of state-of-the-art medical equipment including the DaVinci Si Robot which was used in treating Phil’s kidney cancer. During his semi-annual exam with Dr. Andrew Joel, MD, a

member of the Virginia Hospital Center Physician Group –

Urology, Phil’s CT scan revealed an anomaly which was

confirmed by Dr. Joel to be a renal cell carcinoma (a form of

kidney cancer). Along with his wife, Barbara Jo, a retired

registered nurse, Phil reviewed treatment options with Dr. Joel

and decided upon robotic surgery to treat his kidney cancer.

In March 2014, using the da Vinci Si robot system, Dr. Joel removed just 15% of Phil’s right kidney, leaving 85%

functioning kidney. The da Vinci Si robot was controlled by Dr. Joel, using tiny surgical tools that were inserted into

Phil’s body though small incisions. Once inside, the tools, along with a 3-D monitor, became the eyes and hands of

the surgeon. This technology enhances surgical precision and results in less scarring, blood loss, faster recovery times,

and fewer complications for patients.

“The recovery was incredible,” said Phil, who returned to his normal activities just a few days after surgery. “You

realize how precious life is after you have cancer. I feel lucky my recovery was minimal and painless. I am glad to have

nors who supported this program. This technology saves lives. Many hospitals and patients don’t have this technology

With a Virginia Hospital Center Foundation Charitable Gift Annuity, you will help support medical excellence at the Hospital for generations to come.

A charitable gift annuity (CGA) is a contract between you and the Virginia Hospital Center Foundation in which you transfercash or securities to the Foundation to support patient care. In return, the Foundation pays you and/or your spouse a guaranteed income for life. You are entitled to an immediate charitable tax deduction and a portion of your income may be tax free. CGAs are particularly attractive for individuals with highly appreciated assets that are producing little or no income. CGAs can be established at age 60 for as little as $10,000.
