    LOCATION: a quiet place in the school.

    DURATION: 611minutes.

    PARTICIPANTS: 2 students; examiner; usher.

    MATERIALS: Pictures supplied; list of question words.

    Task 1

    : Introduction,2 minutes maximum.

    The examiner welcomes and reassures the students. The examiner invites each ofthe students in turn to talk about him / herself.

    Task 2

    : 3 minutes maximum.

    The students are given the pictures and each of them chooses one. As far as

    possible the examiner holds it or pins it up out of reach of the student, or places thescreen out of reach of the student, so that he or she is discouraged from answeringby pointing at it. The examiner asks each of the students in turn both specific andgeneral questions about the picture.

    Task 3: 3 minutes maximum.

    Task 1: The examiner should try prompts from different categories:

    MARKING CRITERIA ANGLIA ASCENTIS SPEAKING TESTJUNIOR, PRIMARY AND PRELIMINARY LEVELS

    COMMUNICATION / CONTENT PRONUNCIATIONRANGE OF VOCABULARY /

    GRAMMATICAL ACCURACY

    DThe student can comfortably respond to the examinersquestions.

    Clearly understandablethroughout the test.

    The student is clearly at ease with the basic words andgrammatical structures of the level.

    MThe student understands the examiner most of the timeand gives a correct answer to at least half the questions.

    Sufficiently adequate to beunderstandable.

    The student knows the basic words and grammatical structures ofthe level. There may be a few errors.

    PThe student understands a good proportion of thequestions, and gives some right answers.

    Poor, but understandable atleast half the time.

    The student knows the most basic words and grammar needed forthe level although there are obvious errors / omissions.

    RA combination of not answering and answering wrongly,making communication impossible.

    The student cannot beunderstood most of the time.

    The student knows insufficient basic words or grammar toparticipate in the test.

    U No communication in English taking place at all.
