The ISAI conference, held every year since 1988, has been sponsored by the Instituto Tecnol6gico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) in cooperation with several sponsor- ing organizations such as the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Inc. (IJCAII), the Canadian Society for Computational Studies of Intelli- gence (CSCSI), the European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence, the International Association of Knowledge Engineers (lAKE) and the Sociedad Mexicana de Inteligencia Artificial (SMIA). The theme of the eighth ISAI was the application of Intelligent Systems in Industry and Business (I&B). More than eighty papers were received and evaluated from twenty-one countries. The selected papers for this special issue use several artificial intelligence (AI) techniques that have emerged from the laboratory environment into general practice and application. The intent of the special issue is to provide its readers with the latest development in research and application of AI techniques in I&B. The selected papers cover both the theoretical and practical aspects of AI applications in I&B and related areas, and as such should be of great interest to readers of Expert Systems With Applications throughout the world. We would like to express our gratitude to the contributing authors and reviewers for making this issue possible. Also, we want to thank Professors Francisco Cantt~-Ortiz and Moraima Campbell for helping in the design and preparation of the proceedings of the conference.
