a The fundamentals ofcleaning technology
Sinner's circle
The Sinner's circle illustratesthe interplay between the fourmain factors for successfulcleaning:
■ Chemistry (choice ofcleaning agent)
■ Mechanical (removal of soilvia pressure or friction)
■ Temperature (at whichcleaning is performed)
■ Time (duration of the totalcleaning processes)
The proportion of the indivi-dual factors as a part of theentire cleaning can be varied, provided that the total is 100 per cent. This results in significant savings potentials.
As a result, the intensificationof mechanical cleaning enab-les the consumption ofcleaning agents or the dura-tion of cleaning to be reduced.Consequently, the mechanicalfactor that takes up a greaterpart of the Sinner's circle, while the other factors canend up being reduced.
Cost reduction by efficientcleaning processes
This is precisely where ournozzles and rotating cleaningnozzles come into play, ha-ving been specially developedfor delivering a high mechani-cal cleaning action. Theirgreater efficiency helps to permanently reduce on goingcosts for energy and cleaningagents, and also the durationof cleaning. Consequently aone-off investment in impro-ved nozzle technology paysfor itself after only a short time.

b Mechanical cleaning effects with Lechler rotating cleaning nozzles
Mechanical cleaning
Rotating cleaning nozzles deliver the greatest impactwhen cleaning the surfacearea of the tank. To achievethis, large droplets must strikeat high speed. This enablesthick soil to be removed thatcannot dissolve in the cleaningfluid. Important influencing factors are the distance between the nozzle and wall,
and the operating pressure. If either are too great the fluidwill break down into smaller droplets (see Figs. 3 and 4)and the impact will be re-duced.Besides the impact, the fluidrunning down the tank wallalso has a significant cleaningeffect. If the formed film isthick enough, the resultingshear stresses can removelight to moderate soil. In thatcase, unsprayed patches areless of an issue than is thecase during impact cleaning(see Fig. 5).
the jets from spray balls strikeonly in concentrated spots. The remaining surface is sim-ply cleaned by the shearstresses of the fluid runningoff (see Fig. 6). The fluid con-sumption is therefore signifi-cantly greater in comparisonwith rotating cleaning nozzles.
Comparison of rotatingcleaning nozzles and static spray balls
Due to their simple construc-tion, static spray balls are eco-nomical and are likely to missimportant areas.Whereas rotating cleaningnozzles spray the entire con-tainer wall in a fan-like pattern,

c Influence of chemistry and temperature
The chemical cleaning effecttakes part in almost all tankcleaning applications whenthe soil is dissolved in thecleaning medium or the bonding between soil andtank surface is reduced. Hig-her temperatures can supportthe chemical cleaning effect.
Foam cleaning with nozzles
Foam cleaning is primarilybased on the chemicalcleaning effect. Since thefoam sticks more firmly to the surface, it can be more effective than cleaning fluidsthat drip off quickly. The me-chanical cleaning effect playsa correspondingly subordi-nate role. Here, the task of thenozzle is to distribute the foamevenly. Your end result for thisapplication depends on thetype of foam.

d Impact
The force of impact whenusing a liquid jet on a surfaceplays an important role incleaning technology. The ratio of the force (F) to the surface (A) is referred toas the Impact (I).
It can be controlled via the following parameters:
Surface and spray angle
The impact surface is the areawhere the droplet strikes. Thesmaller the surface area, thegreater the impact values.Nozzles with high impact are,for example, solid streamnozzles and flat fan nozzleswith a narrow spray angle.
Pressure
The impact increases linearwith the connected pressure. Ifyou double the pressure whilemaintaining the same flow rate, you also double the impact.
Flow rate
Increasing the flow rate byusing a larger nozzle increa-ses the impact, assuming thatthe other parameters (sprayangle, pressure and medium)remain the same.

e Spray angle, spraying distance, spraying behaviour
Depending on the version andjob, we supply single-fluidnozzles with differently step-ped spray angles from 0° (solid stream nozzles) to 360°(tank-cleaning nozzles). Thequoted spray angles applyclose to the nozzle and in astill atmosphere. Gravity andair flows influence the spraypattern.
Depending on the version,single-fluid nozzles can spraythe fluid as a hollow cone,
solid stream or flat fan. Thesolid stream nozzle does notspray, but rather produces a closed jet that hits at a con-centrated point. The jet onlybegins to break up after somedistance. Twin-fluid nozzleshave a narrow spray angle ofapproximately 20° due to thehigh speed at which the com-pressible medium exits. However, as the distance fromthe nozzle increases, the spraypattern becomes increasinglyless sharply delimited. Twin-fluid nozzles normally producefull cone or flat fan spray pat-terns.

f Viscosity
Increasing viscosity of the fluidcan reduce the flow rate, changes the spray pattern(narrower spraying angle) andallows the droplet spectrum tobecome coarser.
Depending on the fluid pro-perties, it is possible to coun-teract this to a certain extentby means of higher pressure. For very viscous substances, itis recommended to use twin-fluid nozzles in most cases. Itcan also be helpful to take ac-count of the fluid's rheology.
Figure 11: Atomization of gelatine witha Lechler ViscoMist twin-fluid nozzle
g Droplet sizes
Twin-fluid nozzles can pro-duce very fine to extremelyfine droplets. The size dependsmainly on the flow rate ratio ofthe compressible mediumused (m3/h) to the atomizedfluid (l/min): The greater theratio, the finer the atomization. In the case of single-fluidnozzles however, the decisivefactors are pressure, nozzletype and flow rate across thedroplet spectrum. Increasingpressure results in finer atomi-zation, but mostly only up to acertain level.
Hollow cone nozzles producevery fine to fine droplets at thesame pressure and flow rate.Full cone nozzles produceslightly coarser droplet spec-trums, and finally flat fan nozz-les have the coarsest dropletspectrum.
The following generally ap-plies: Within a series and at agiven pressure, nozzles with alower flow rate produce finerdroplet spectrums than nozz-les with a higher flow rate.

i Temperature behaviour of nozzle materials
Applications with temperaturesup to 140 °C are very common. These include for examplemost cleaning applicationsand sterilisation processes.Applications with higher temperatures are rare, andapplications at very low temperatures are even rarer. The general temperature information from material datasheets must always be scruti-nised for every single case ofnozzle use. Pressure, mecha-nical stress type, chemistryand time are decisive factorsfor the suitability of a nozzlematerial at increased tempe-ratures. Chemical processescan be more aggressive athigh temperatures.
A material may be able towithstand them if this tempe-rature occurs for a very shortperiod only. In all materials, high temperatures result in reduced strength values. Themechanical stress type musttherefore also be taken intoaccount in high-pressure applications in particular. In addition, vibrations in the system can cause prematurefailure.
Time (permanently high temperatures)
Pressure and mechanical stress (e.g. vibrations)
Chemistry (accelerated by high temperatures)

j Narrowest cross section
The risk of a nozzle blockingdepends greatly on its narro-west cross section (Ø E). Ex-perience has shown that forsmooth operation, the maxi-mum particle size in the fluidshould not exceed one thirdof the narrowest cross section.
Hollow cone and full conenozzles with axial flow havean internal swirl. Hollow coneand full cone nozzles with in-flow at the side (tangential oreccentric design) do not needa swirl and are therefore muchless prone to blockages. In thefield of flat fan nozzles, ourtongue-type nozzles representa special design that is lesssusceptible to blockages.
k Connections
Nozzles are mainly construc-ted with the thread standardsISO 228, DIN 2999 (EN 10226-1) and NPT. A distinction is made herebetween sealing and non-sea-ling threads. In the case ofnon-sealing threads, Teflon®strip or a thread paste is usedto provide the seal. Not allnozzles can be connectedwith a thread. For these wesupply flange solutions con-forming to the standards DIN2527, EN 1092-1 and ASME B16.5. Aseptic clamp connecti-ons (Tri-Clamp connections)conforming to the standardDIN 11864-3 are also possi-ble. Whether a connectionother than the standard con-nection is feasible for a nozzlemust be decided on an indivi-dual case basis.

h Liquid distribution
An even liquid distribution iscrucial to processes such ascoating. This requires severalnozzles to be arranged next toeach other. This is becausewhereas a single nozzlewould produce a parabolic liquid distribution, severalnozzles arranged next to eachother allows an almost evendistribution via overlapping.
Measuring the distribution
The liquid distribution in aplane can be determined withthe aid of a combination ofPlexiglas cylinders. The fillinglevel of the individual cylin-ders is determined fully auto-matically. This measuringprocess can also record the liquid distribution of a nozzleover a moving measuringplane. This enables conveyorbelt spraying to be simulated, for example.

l Materials
Lechler precision spray nozzles are made of extremelyhigh-grade materials that aredesigned to meet high requi-rements such as resi stance tocleaning chemicals or tempe-rature influences. The largechoice of different materials –e.g. stainless steel AISI 316L,PVDF, PEEK or PTFE – allowsnozzle selection customized tothe individual application andoperating conditions. In addi-tion, the materials used for thetank and equipment cleaningnozzles are perfectly matchedto each other and are thuscharacterized by very lowwear.
m Hygiene requirements
Lechler‘s precision spraynozzles are designed so thatthey meet hygiene require-ments.
This is reflected, for example,in the self-draining function, minimized dead space in thenozzles as well as an externaldesign without unnecessarygaps and edges. At the sametime, the nozzles are designedwith the lowest possible sur-face roughness.
n Nozzle wear, material certificates & ATEX
Nozzle wear
Nozzle wear depends greatlyon the conditions of use andon the nozzle material. Nor-mally, the nozzle's fluid dis -charge opening wears as aresult of material abrasion. The following conditions ofuse can speed up wear:
The product pages for the individual nozzles provide information on the materialsavailable for the differentnozzle types.
In addition to the requirementsfor material resistance andwear, the materials must alsobe food grade for use in thebeverage, food and pharma-ceutical industries. Dependingon the application area, thematerials must meet differentdemands.
A large number of the mate -rials used for Lechler precisionspray nozzles comply with the
requirements of the FDA or conform to (EC) No. 1935/2004.
Further information on conformity is provided on the product pages.
The FDA, theU.S. Food &Drug Admini-stration, is a
federal agency which over-seas those two industries. Ma-terials used in making Lechlerproducts are compliant withthe requirements of FDA regu-lation 21 CFR for use in foodapplications.
The regulation(EC) No. 1935/2004 of the Euro-pean Parliamentregulates general
safety requirements to all foodand beverage contact materi-als.
Within this regulation, it is additionally stipulated that plastics must comply with(EU) 10/2011.
The respective logo on theproduct pages indicateswhich requirements are met.
Lechler also offers speciallycertified nozzles for particularhygiene requirements. The»Teflon® Whirly« and 527 se-ries are 3A-certified, for exam-ple.
»3-A® SanitarySymbol CouncilAdministrativeCouncil forSpray CleaningDevices (78-01)«
The 3-A® council is an orga -nization in the USA that defi-nes criteria for the cleanability
of components in the dairyand food industry. Compo-nents and systems are exami-ned to establish whethergerms adhere to surfaces orexisting soiling can be remo-ved.
Components and systems areawarded a »3-A® certificate«only if they are easy to cleanor if soil cannot be depositedin the first place.
European Hy-gienic Engi-neering andDesign Group.The EHEDGalso checks
and certifies the hygienic de-sign of components. Its proce-dure is similar to that of 3-A®.The »HygienicWhirly« series isEHEDG-certified.

In most applications, static spray balls do not deliver the same cleaningpower as rotating nozzles, anyway they do have advantages that makethem indispensable for certain tasks:
- No moving parts- Self-draining- Easy to inspect- Proven use in hygienically sensitive environments
Should a rotating nozzle stop turning for some reason, parts of the tankmay remain uncleaned. This cannot happen with spray balls. However, gaps can occur in the spray pattern if individual openings are blocked with soil.
Compared to rotating nozzles, static spray balls usually need two to threetimes the amount of liquid.

Pneumatic atomizing nozzles, for atomizing viscous mediaSeries 176 ViscoMist™
The ViscoMist™ series offersindependent regulation ofboth atomising air and fanair, which provides the userwith infinite control over theviscous fluid’s spray patternand droplet size.
The ViscoMist™ nozzle features a standard ‘LiquidShut-Off/ Clean-Out Needle’function. This design elementactivates and deactivates theliquid supply, while simul-taneously removing excessfluid from the fluid nozzle preventing clogging. This feature is especially vital whenthe viscous liquids are beingapplied in continuous processenvironments.
The modular design of theViscoMist™ allows maximumflexibility to meet the exactspray requirements.
Interchangeable air caps andvarious flow capacities areavailable to suit any sprayingapplication needs.

Nozzle valve system for the variableatomization of very small liquid volumes
Applications
n Vitamin sprayingn Spraying of low-viscosity
sugar solutionsn Anti-Scuffingn Hygiene applicationsn Product moisturizing
Innovative spraying techno logy opens up new applications
The pressure to standardize isincreasing in almost all areas, and the demand for more economical and moreenvironmentally friendly pro-duction processes is growing. The newly developed LechlerVarioSpray II nozzle valvesystem with pulse widthmodulation impresses with itsenormous flexibility and offersthe possibility of spraying verysmall volumes of liquid withprecision.
In the case of hydraulic nozzlesystems, the narrowest crosssection of the spray nozzle de-termines the liquid flow rate. For reasons of economy andproduction however, it is notpossible to reduce this narrow-est cross sections to any fur-ther degree desired. For thisreason there are physical limitsto a nozzle's minimum flowrate. Pneumatic systems aretherefore used in order to realize the lowest flow rates. This allows very small flow ratesto be generated by using air. However, this pneumaticatomization has its limits wherethe volumes delivered must bevaried and adapted tochanged process parameters. This often makes controldisproportionately complex.
Using air can also have an unfavorable effect on opera-ting costs, as aerosols formand liquid is lost due to the re-bound effect.
VarioSpray II allows very smallvolumes of liquid to beatomized while using hydraulicnozzles at the same time.
Flexible system
n Simple change to the pulsewidth and cycle frequency
n Flushing functionn Modular design and
modular systemn Start/Stop signal
(e.g. via light barrier)
What is pulse widthmodulation?
Pulse width modulation refersto the variation of the ON timeton / OFF time toff of a square-wave signal when the frequency f remains constant. Here, the frequency f corre-sponds to the reciprocal valueof the period duration T.
The ratio of the ON time ton tothe period duration T is referredto as the pulse width ratio (DC = duty cycle). The pulsewidth ratio determines the flowrate. The valve is open duringthe ON time ton. The shorter the DC, the lessthe flow rate. Depending on the frequencyselected, the pulsation is barelyperceptible to the naked eye.
Further information and ordering data on request.
Characteristics The benefits to you
Minimum flow rates- Liquid saving- Inexpensive simple single fluid nozzlesystem
→ Cost reduction→ Increased efficiency
Frequency up to 100 Hz- Flexible belt speeds → Increased productivity
→ Production time reduction
Control ratio up to 11 : 1- Large flow rates coveredwith one nozzle
→ No nozzle change
Variable flow rate- Flexible adjustment of the volume applied for different products
→ Product change time reduction
Different flow rates have no influence on spraying parameters- Constant spray angle- Constant droplet size
→ Constant process parameters
Flow rate is not regulatedvia the pressure- No high pressure required- Simple configuration
→ Short installation time → Low maintenance costs → Low operating costs
Low-wear valve- Only one movable object → Low maintenance
