Mathematics is a foreign language, as I’m sure you would agree, and as in any foreign
language, understanding the subtleties of the language depends upon a clear
understanding of the “words” that make up the language. It really is imperative that you
have a good understanding of the concepts of domain, range, and function and that you
know how to read information from a graph. Hence this worksheet. I entreat you to
earnestly work at this, talk with the other students about these problems and try to
internalize the various concepts as you work through the problems. These concepts are
the initial building blocks of the language and the framework for this semester.
What I would like you to do is to graph the following functions and then indicate what
the domain and range are.
There are patterns of graphing in the following problems. The first equation in each
group is the “parent functions” by which I mean the most basic kind of function. The
problems in each group are variations of these basic functions. Try to understand how
certain numbers in each equation “transform” the basic parent functions, that is, how
certain numbers in each equation move the basic function to a new location.
**Calculators or no calculators, that is the question.**
My suggestion to you would be that you use your calculator only if you have no idea
what the graph looks like. Once you know the shape of the parent function you should be
able to sketch the other graphs without a calculator.

What is a Function?
Define relation:
Define function:
Given the graphs below, explain why the each is/is not a function. It is not sufficient to
say that the vertical line test fails or works. If the graph is not a function, supply at least
2 ordered pairs as well as a brief statement as to why the relation is not a function
