Pre-Season Results and Fixtures

From the Directors’ BoxA warm welcome to Cuthbury. We

extend our hospitality to the offi-cials, players, staff and supporters ofour visitors, hope you enjoy your timewith us, and have a safe journey home.Well what a summer it’s been – and I’mnot just talking about the weather! After the disappointment of missing outon promotion on penalties, who’d havethought a team called Shaw Lane fromBarnsley – no I’d never heard of themeither – would turn out to have such abig impact on the future of WimborneTown on the pitch. Thanks to their resignation, we receivedan invitation to be effectively promotedto the Evo-Stik League South PremierDivision South which of course we hap-pily accepted. The chance to playagainst the likes of Poole, Weymouth,Dorchester & Salisbury was simply toogood to turn down. There followed a torturous, and if I’mhonest, unreasonable 4 week wait be-fore our position was finally ratifiedsome 8 weeks after the season had fin-ished. Whilst there was nothing the FAcould do about the resignation of ShawLane, the subsequent movements andappeals process arising from our pro-motion was not the FA’s finest moment. All the appeals were dismissed but whyit took so long only they know and, inmy view, needs to be handled betterand quicker in future situations such asthis. That aside, the club is understandablydelighted with the promotion but in fair-

ness it hasn’t afforded Matty the best ofpreparations for the new season. Youwon’t find him complaining, but as aBoard we appreciate it’s not an idealway to prepare for our first season atthis level. It has led to two main complications.Firstly, Matty has re-signed almost eve-ryone from last season but had heknown of our promotion at the outsetthen he may of course have taken aslightly different approach with one ortwo. Secondly it has led to his pre-sea-son schedule being thrown into disarraywith 3 games against Weymouth,Dorchester & Gosport all having to becancelled now that we are in the sameleague as each other. There’s no rulethat prevents these pre-season gamestaking place, it’s just not the done thingand for each of those clubs it is ofcourse only one game for them to re-place – for us it’s 3 which is much moretricky. Special thanks therefore must goto Blackfield & Langley FC and to Wor-thing FC for stepping in as late replace-ments to keep our pre-seasonpreparations on track.Despite the less than ideal preparationsthese are exciting times for our club andI hope you enjoy these pre-seasongames before the league action startson August 11th.Enjoy the game.

Wimborne Town Football Club Ltd is a private company limited by shares andregistered at Companies House with registered number 03640938. ParmiterHoldings Ltd owns 77% of the issued shares and Adam Batchelor owns 17%.

Wimborne Town was formed in 1878 and became a founder member of the DorsetCounty FA in 1887.In the 1930’s the Club won the Dorset Division Two title three times, the Dorset JuniorChallenge Cup twice and the Dorset Junior Amateur Cup four times.Wimborne’s first senior honour came in 1937 with the Dorset Senior Amateur Cup, afeat not repeated until 1964. In 1981, Wimborne won the Dorset League Division Onechampionship without losing a match. The same year, Wimborne joined the WesternLeague and finished third in Division One in 1984/85.Wimborne joined the Wessex League in 1987 and so began a glittering chapter in theClub’s history. Over the following 22 years they won the Wessex League three times(1991/2, 1993/93 & 1999/00) and lifted the Wessex League Cup in 1993/94 to becomethe first team to achieve the League and Cup double. They repeated that feat in1999/00 and also won the Dorset Senior Challenge Cup in 1991/92 and 1996/97.Wimborne also have a history of achievement in FA competitions. In 1982/83, theyreached the FA Cup First Round where they played Aldershot, then a league side. Thedream ended there, however, with a 4-0 defeat. And in 1992, the Club reached the FA Vase final, becoming the first Dorset club to playat Wembley. Under manager Alex Pike, the Magpies lifted the trophy with a 5-3 winover holders Guiseley. That same season, Wimborne also won the Dorset Senior Chal-lenge Cup and Wessex League championship to complete an historic treble triumph.2009/10 was another milestone for the Magpies as they gained promotion to the South-ern League for the first time in the Club’s history. After a difficult first two seasons Wim-borne, became established in the league finishing mid table and gaining more pointseach season. In 2014/15, after a run of 4 victories, the Magpies reached the FA Trophy first roundproper for the first time in the club’s history. A 3-0 home defeat by Oxford City of theConference North ended the excitement.A disappointing start to the 2015/16 season led to Steve Cuss resigning as Manager inNovember. Club stalwart Paul Roast took over as caretaker boss before Simon Brownewas appointed as Manager, During this time new Directors came on board, but “duediligence” of the finances uncovered a large deficit. Despite the playing budget beingslashed, and most of the squad leaving, relegation was avoided. Off the field, a greateffort led to the financial position being resolved. For the 2016/17 season there was renewed optimism with a new Board in place. MattyHolmes took over as Manager, and assembled a strong but young squad whichachieved our then highest position in the Southern League of 11th.Holmes and his team improved on that in 2017-18, finishing 3rd on 77 points, havingscored over 100 goals, and winning the Dorset Senior Cup for the first time in 21 yearsalong the way. The euphoria of those achievements were muted by a play-off final de-feat by Swindon Supermarine in a penalty shoot-out. However, the restructuring ofleagues at Steps 3 and 4, and the demise of Shaw Lane FC led to a late promotion forWimborne as the highest performing team not already promoted. This means that for2018-19 the Magpies will be playing at Step 3 for the first time in their history.

From the Dugout

Hello everyone, and welcome toour pre-season games vChristchurch, Worthing and

Blackfield & Langley. I would like to wel-come the players, staff and supportersof our pre-season opponents to Wim-borne for the game.Congratulations to Christchurch on theirpromotion last season, I know Ollie,Chris and Shaun well, and they havedone a great job securing promotion, also congratulations to Blackfield & Lan-gley for their promotion into the south-ern league, Chris and Glenn have alsodone a great job securing promotionwhich they deserve after being one ofthe top Wessex sides now for a fewseasons.. I would like to thank WorthingFc for coming down today at the lastminute to provide us with what will bean excellent game.Since the disappointed of losing toSwindon in the play off final in front of apacked Cuthbury a lot has happened. The feeling of defeat and a missedchance to play in the southern premier,to then hear three weeks later that wewere going up as a best placed play offloser was an unbelievable feeling thatsent excitement through the club.We now prepare for a very tough cam-paign in the southern premier againstclubs with bigger budgets than us, al-though saying that we had that last sea-son as well and ended up 3rd. The spiritand togetherness we have in this squadis incredible and will be a main factor ifwe are again to secure a good positionin the league this season. With the play-ers performing so well last season all ofthem were offered new deals to stayand I am pleased that all accepted apart

from Matty Oldring who has located toLeeds, Sam Bayston who decided to goto Hamworthy, and Lloyd Cole whosework commitments would have beendifficult for him this season. I would liketo thank Matty, Sam and Lloyd for theirexcellent efforts last season and help insecuring promotion to the southern pre-mier.I am looking to add at least 2 more play-ers, Our search will continue as we lookto get the right characters into thesquad. The players have now settled back intotraining and all returned back in goodshape and weighed in on the scales atgood weights, I am pleased as thisgives us a good start to push the play-ers on quicker ready for the new seasonahead. Our first pre season game against Ver-wood started well with a good all roundperformance, scoring 8 goals a cleansheet and 3 of our development squadplaying a major part second half provedto be a good start. Our trip to Newquayto play a good Godolphin side proved tobe a great test and also give the playerssome time together with the overnightstay which they all seemed to enjoy. As we approach the final part of preseason the main thing is that we contin-ue to prepare the players in their organi-sation and to all pray we have no moreinjuries.I hope you all enjoy thepre-season games.Best wishes,

Matty

Toby’s 60 goals came in 48 starts and 2 sub appearances

You’ve just read how our match reporters described Toby’s 60 goals. We asked him which was the best, and which was the most important of his goals:“My best goal has to be the one at home against North Leigh when I ran from theedge of our own box the length of the pitch past 5/6 players and scored with the out-side of my foot. The most important goal is a tough one. It would either be the first goal in the playoff semi-final against Didcot or the winning penalty against Poole to get us into theDorset Senior Cup final. If I had to choose, I would say the Poole Town one be-cause it was a great feeling to score a winning goal against a team you used to playfor and apparently "weren’t good enough" to start for for the second season in arow, and the fact we then went on to win the cup makes it more special than theDidcot one.”Thanks, TobyWe took 4 pages to describe Toby’s goals, and he chose one we hadn’t included as themost important. Football Shorts - Greens Show Heart - Ian Ridley - Non-League Paper 15 July“Hendon F.C. (who will be playing in our division next season - Ed) have an-nounced that they will admit free to a home game anyone suffering from depressionor loneliness. They believe that Non-League football can offer a safe venue so thatpeople have an outlet rather than be isolated. They are asking those interested toemail, in confidence, their Chairman, to arrange to get their introduction to the clubata game.More power to Hendon for addressing with practical compassion what is becoming, thankfully, a more open topic and showing how Non-League, with its welcomingatmosphere, can help. Here’s hoping more clubs follow suit.”

Sin-bins get a green light Non-League Paper 15 July

Sin Bins are to be introduced in the Hellenic League next season. The scheme will be trialled in both of the league’s two Step 7 Divisions Two and theveteran’s league. The Sin Bins will apply, at this stage, only to yellow cards shown for dissent. Theywill see the player concerned leave the field for 10 minutes. While clubs are normally charged £10 for every such yellow card, such fines will notbe issued to those participating in this trial. The FA is set to implement sin bins across the board at Step 7 in 2019-20.

Goals from James Stokoe and StuartLangrish either side of half-time earnedthe Magpies the derby bragging rightsat Cuthbury, although Russell Cooke'seffort for Priory set up a tense finish.Warren, who looked on from the side-lines as Stokoe also missed a penalty, added: "I counted at least eight reallygood chances for us in the first 25 to30 minutes and we could have putthem to bed in the first half. It probablywould have been game-over if wehadn't missed the penalty because wesliced them open at will in the first half."But, and for whatever reason, our ladsseemed to think that Christchurchweren't going to give us a game in thesecond half but it never works like that."Graham Kemp's teams don't lie downand die. They are hard working and

will carry on until the death. Westopped doing all the good things inthe second half and it was horrendous.Christchurch also played the final 30minutes with 10 men after defenderSteve Linpow had been dismissed fortwo bookings.

Gerry Page TrophyThe match on July 20th is an annual event in memory of Gerry Page, whosename for many years was synonymous with Christchurch F.C.Gerry, a London man, became involved with the club in the early 1970s when hewas asked by the then Chairman to help persuade Roy Gator, a player with theCherries, to take the Manager’s seat at Christchurch. Shortly afterwards, in 1975,Gerry was asked to be Chairman, a post he held until illness forced him to give itup in early 1994, at which time he became President of the club. In addition to hisduties as Chairman, Gerry served on the Wessex League management Commit-tee for many years.Sadly, Gerry passed away in October 1994.Gerry’s wife, Dawn, followed him to the club, and became Secretary in the early1980s, a post she held for over 20 years. She is now President of the club, andstill on the club’s Committee.

The Magpies’ first pre-season gamesaw them defeat Verwood 8-0 at Pot-terne Park in the Steve Moore Trophy.Steve had been a popular footballerwho played for Christchurch, Ver-wood and Wimborne during his ca-reer. Sadly he lost his fight againstcancer at the age of 32 in 2016.Therefore to honour his career anannual match is played pre-seasonas the Steve Moore trophy to com-memorate his legacy as a player andas a person off the pitch.Wimborne lifted the trophy for the sec-ond time running with an 8-0 win. JackLovell exposed the home defence witha great hat trick, whilst Louis Kellawayfinished a great team goal inside thebox. Wimborne’s first preseason gameallowed youth players Aidan Shepherd,Ben Knight and Ed Phillips to gainsome vital experience within the firstteam environment. It only took 14 minutes for Wimborne tomake an impact within the game whenJack Lovell perfectly executed a volleyto make it 1-0. Jack wasn’t afraid toshow his ability at the front of the goalagain, when Louis Kellaway passed amagnificent through ball which wentonto the eager Jack, who slotted theball under the keeper into the net. Forhis hat trick Lovell had accelerated intothe box with the ball, only to be takendown for a clear penalty in the 41stminute. Therefore Jack stood up andscored from the spot, to give him hishat trick that he deserved and givingthe team a comfortable 3-0 lead beforeheading into the break. It didn’t stop there for the Magpieswhen it only took one minute after the

break for Wimborne to score again.Louis Kellaway and Jack Lovell hadportrayed Wimborne’s “beautiful” play-ing style with some inspiring one to onepasses which led to Louis Kellaway,(“Goal Machine”) contributing Wim-borne’s fourth goal. This time the fifth goal wasn’t scored bya Wimborne player but it was an owngoal by Verwood’s No.14 who tried toclear a low cross but his intentionsdidn’t come to reality when Wimbornewere already celebrating a 5-0 lead inthe 60th minute.Young 17 year old Aidan Shepherdcame on to replace Stefan Penny andhe made his mark on the game in the70th minute with a goal which made it6-0. One of Bournemouth’s youth acad-emy players arrived onto the pitch toexpress his talent when young ConalMorrison was also fouled in the penaltyarea. Morrison fired it from the spotwhich ricocheted off the keeper to headin the top corner. For Verwood, theirbest chance came in the 83rd minutewhen a corner was played for theirNo.4 who had just missed the post witha great header. It was again that AidanShepherd would score from anotherimpressive through ball from Luke Bur-bidge which sealed off the game asWimborne won 8-0 at Potterne Park.A great start to Wimborne’s pre-seasoncampaign. Their next game is againstGodolphin Athletic FC based in New-quay who play in the South West Pe-ninsula League Premier Division. It willbe the first time both clubs will have toplay against each other and it shouldbe a test of Wimborne’s strength whenthey enter an unknown territory.

Soldiering On! Fleet appeal for help after lateral moveChris Dunlavy - Non-League Paper 8 July 2018

Fleet Town chair, man Alec Grant hasaccused the Southern League of jeop-ardising the club’s future. The Blues, based in Hampshire, have lost theirmain ground sponsor, every player, andtheir entire coaching staff after losing anappeal against their transfer from Isthmi-an South Central to Southern West.Three hundred mile trips to the likes ofBideford and Barnstaple will also meantriple the travelling costs, whilst theirclosest game is Winchester City - some40 miles away.Fleet, along with Hednesford Town andBanbury United, were uprooted after thecollapse of Evo-Stik Premier side ShawLane and, according to Grant, given no

opportunity to state their objections. Thisfact - an apparent contravention of FAregulations - had formed the basis ofFleet’s appeal. However, despite the Isthmian League’swillingness to accept Fleet and run withan odd number of clubs, Grant claimstheir Southern League counterparts ve-toed the move, prompting an FA panelto uphold the decision.“We’ll plough on, probably with a youth-based team. Hopefully that will beenough. It’s hit us hard. We’re trying toraise awareness, get support from spon-sors and local communities. We’ll haveto fundraise like mad. What we reallyneed is a travel company.”

Matt did not know until July 4th whatleague, what players, what budget, whatsponsors and what pre-season to or-ganise. Having lost 3 players: Matty O,Loyd, and Sam Bayston, at the momentwe have a very small squad, so we willplay our first game in the Southern Pre-mier League very much on the backfoot, but everyone at the Club will takethe promotion. I’m sure, in fact I know,we will start the league with the samementality and desire to win games, andperform in the highest league Wimbornehave ever played in.Starting in Dorset Div 1, then movingthrough Dorset Combination, WessexLeague, Southern League South &West to Southern Premier, there havebeen so many memorable managersand individuals at the Club: Alex Pike, the late Nick Jennings, and the Vasesquad; Paul Arnold and John Macey;Alex Browne; Darren Powell; JamieSturgess; Steve Cuss; Simon Browneand Brendon King; Taffy, Tom, Jamie,Shovel, Peter Barham, Brian Sibley,Ken Fergus, Geoff Maxted, Lee Merri-field, Ken Stewart, John Edwards andNick O’hara to name a few. All of theseand many more have built this club towhat it is - a FAMILY CLUB.Many clubs love coming to Wimborne, and we need to keep it that way. Weshouldn’t have to ask people, volun-teers, but we are a bigger club now, andwe need help to keep Cuthbury up to astandard, and not just say: “We’re mov-ing grounds soon, so what’s the point.”We are at a different level now, and weneed HELP to keep up our standard aswe hope the crowds will increase: morestewards, hospitality, 2 hrs a weekweeding, emptying bins, painting.

We need ideas to improve the dressingroom area as it won’t be big enough inthe ground grading - we might get awaywith it this year, but they’ll need doing. We have a new bar manager, Clive, who is there 5 days a week to have adrink and a chat with, or to book a func-tion, birthday party, wakes. On the pitch Matt is doing his utmost toplay the football we all want to watch. We are getting so much support fromour Youth Managers, Sally, Gus, Dar-ren, and all the youth which now total 12teams.Now we’re in the Southern Premier, wewant to stay in this league. GrahamBell, Tony and Val Grant, Ken Stewart,Lee and Terry are all working to getsponsors for match days, match balls, and players. Finally, the Club would like to say a spe-cial “thank you” to Ron Dinmore for allthat he did for Wimborne Town F.C.Below Jeff receives the Steve Moore Cupat last season’s presentation night.
