At the age of 19, Italian-born Alessio Baxwon the First Prize at the HamamatsuInternational Piano Competition in Japan,and in 2000 he was declared First Prizewinner in the Leeds InternationalPianoforte Competition. Since that time hehas established an international reputation,performing solo recitals and concerti withleading orchestras throughout the world.His 2008/09 schedule includes extensivetours of Japan and Russia and appearancesin France, Germany, Switzerland, Mexico,Italy and throughout the USA.

The 2009 Fellow of theAmerican Pianists Association,yet to be determined at the timeof this printing, will performFriday’s noontime recital.

Louis Nagel holds threedegrees from The JuilliardSchool and has been on thefaculty of the University ofMichigan since 1969. He hasconcertized throughout theworld and lectured on a vari-ety of musical topics thatexplore the relationshipbetween psychological andperformance issues.

Mei-Ting Sun will performthis noontime recital on aDisklavier™ concert grandpiano in the Salon at YamahaArtist Services in New YorkCity. Renowned teacher and pianistRobert Weirich will conduct amaster class with the threewinners of the 2009 MTNAPiano Auditions.

Robert Weirich leads an activecareer as a pianist, teacher,author, and activist. He holds the

Jack Strandberg Missouri Endowed Chair in Piano at theUMKC Conservatory in Kansas City. His articles andreviews have been published by various music magazines,most recently Clavier Companion.

Frances Clark in ActionThe reputation of Frances Clark islegendary. Her publications are readilyavailable, but few of us had the oppor-tunity to study with her or observeher teaching. On Thursday morning,the conference will see rare videofootage of Frances Clark teaching inprivate and group settings, accompa-nied by commentary from LouiseGoss, Dr. Clark’s teaching partner.

Frances Clark's life and career influencedthe entire field of piano teacher training in the last half of the twentiethcentury.The fresh, new philosophy of teaching that formed the basis of thepiano pedagogy programs she initiated at Kalamazoo College (MI) and latertransplanted to Westminster Choir College and The New School for MusicStudy (Princeton, NJ), was the result of her distinguished lifetime career as apioneering music educator.

Countless adults yearn to play the piano. RMM stress-free classes are “dream-fulfillment opportunities” as adults learn that there isno expiration date on dreams. Brenda Dillon will demonstrate RMM classes with two pianos and Debra Perez will demonstrateRMM classes with multiple pianos.

Debra Perez maintains a successfulRMM program for adult piano studentsin South Texas.This program has drawnnational attention from both educatorsand music retailers. Ms. Perez is cur-rently co-authoring a 15-book RMMprogram for adult piano students.

Brenda Dillon, Project Director forthe National Piano Foundation, is aleader in the RMM movement – teach-ing classes, training teachers, writingarticles, and developing materials. Sheis also on the Advisory Board of theFrances Clark Center.

In this remarkable teaching demonstration, technology and piano pedagogy interface to illustrate an expanded possibility for thepiano lesson. Jennifer Snow will be on-stage at the conference teaching a student in New York City. Conversely, Paul Sheftel willbe in New York as he teaches a student seated in front of the audience at the conference in Lombard.

Jennifer Snow is an accomplished per-former who has appeared as a solo and col-laborative pianist throughout Canada, theUnited States,Asia, and Europe. Currentlyon the faculty at the UCLA Herb AlpertSchool of Music, she teaches piano, collab-orative piano, and pedagogy.

Paul Sheftel is a leader in keyboard stud-ies and has performed, lectured, and con-ducted workshops throughout the UnitedStates.His published materials and softwareare widely used in the US,Europe,and Asia.

Every piano teacher wants to have asignificant impact on the world. Butthe ways in which we view the roleand purpose of our teaching can eitherincrease or constrain our impact onstudents, communities and society.Mr. Chung will discuss two of thefigurative “lenses” teachers often use

to view their role – the Life Shaper and the Artist Maker –and explain how the proper use of these lenses can empowerall teachers to maximize their impact on the world.

Artists have always been the firstadopters of technology.This sessionwill explore some of the opportuni-ties that the current emphasis oncreativity, entrepreneurship, andglobalization present to piano teach-ers. Our students know the value ofcraft and creativity, but how can we

broaden the applications of what we teach while not dilut-ing what we do best?

José Antonio Bowen is Dean of the Meadows School of theArts at Southern Methodist University. He has written over 100scholarly articles and received a NEH Fellowship for work on hisbook The Conductor and the Score: A History of theRelationship between Interpreter and Text fromBeethoven to Wagner. Dr. Bowen, a jazz performer as well asconductor, has been a pioneer in active learning and the use oftechnology in the classroom.

Louise Goss, Frances Larimer, JamesLyke, and Robert PaceOverview of Piano Pedagogy in the USATo celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of theNational Conference on Piano Pedagogy, this panel reunitesleaders in the field who were instrumental in NCPP’s estab-lishment, development and success.They will offer their per-spective on piano pedagogy in the decades leading up to thefirst NCPP conferences, and will assess the achievements ofthe NCPP and NCKP conferences and their committees.

Sarah JohnsonMusicians of the Future… and Your Role

In this address Sarah Johnson willshare inspirational projects she hasdirected, explaining the underlyingprincipals that make these projectssuccessful, and articulating your keyrole in training the flexible and skilledyoung musicians who will lead in the21st century.

Sarah Johnson received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees inoboe performance from The Juilliard School. She now serves asDirector of The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, where she isresponsible for developing and overseeing all educational and com-munity activities at Carnegie Hall as well as strategic planning ona local, national, and international level. Prior to joining CarnegieHall in April 2007, Ms. Johnson served as Director of Educationand Community Partnerships at The Philadelphia Orchestra.

Honoring James LykeCo-founder of the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy

The 2009 NCKP honors James Lyke with its LifetimeAchievement Award. Thirty years ago he co-founded theNational Conference on Piano Pedagogy in collaborationwith Richard Chronister. Dr. Lyke’s career is intimately asso-ciated with the University of Illinois where he taught from1959 to 1993.At Illinois he was chair of the Group Piano andPiano Pedagogy Division and under his leadership a Master’sdegree in piano pedagogy and the Piano Laboratory Programfor children were established. In 1993 Dr. Lyke accepted aposition at Georgia State University where he was appointedDirector of Graduate Studies for the School of Music and wascoordinator of the piano pedagogy program. He is well-known for his book Creative Piano Teaching and his texts forgroup piano instruction, Keyboard Musicianship, KeyboardFundamentals and Ensemble Music for Group Piano.

Participating in the Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony will be Dr.Lyke’s former colleagues, Tony Caramia and Reid Alexander.

Tony Caramia will perform a short jazz recital honoring his longtime friend andcolleague. Mr. Caramia is Professor of Piano at the Eastman School of Music,where he teaches piano and is Director of Piano Pedagogy Studies. He is belovedas both performer and educator, and has traveled throughout the USA and acrossthe world in those capacities.

Reid Alexander, Professor of Music at the University of Illinois, will detail Dr. Lyke’sprofessional accomplishments. Dr. Alexander is an accomplished pianist and a co-

compiler of the highly regarded Composer Editions (Frederick Harris). He has receivedteaching awards at Illinois and has served MTNA as state and division president.

Immediately following the Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony,there will be a wine, cheese, and hors d’oevres reception honoring James Lyke.
