ArchbishopWhen a bishop is appointed by the Pope to serve as Archbishop, he is made the visible head of an archdiocese. An archdiocese is a larger diocese, or one of historical importance. His primary task remains – to teach, govern and sanctify this flock.

Holy OrdersOne Sacrament - three degrees of communion and service. The mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues in the Church today and will through all time through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The Sacrament of Holy Orders configures Bishops and Priests to the ministry of Christ as priest, prophet and king. This Sacrament configures a Deacon to Christ as servant.

The Sacrament of Holy OrdersJust as the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus at the beginning of His public ministry, and inspired the apostles on the day of Pentecost, so too, through ordination, men are anointed by the Holy Spirit with the gifts they need to serve the people of God.

Episcopate - BishopThe episcopate is the fullness of the sacrament of Holy Orders. Through ordination, Bishops become successors of the Apostles’ and carry on Christ’s mission of salvation. Bishops are therefore called to teach, govern and sanctify the people entrusted to their care in a particular (arch)diocese. They are also co-responsible with their brother Bishops, for the mission of the universal Church.

Presbyterate - PriestPriests are co-workers with the Bishop. Through ordination, priests receive the spiritual gift of grace to bring Christ’s universal mission of salvation to the world. When a priest celebrates the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist, he is exercising the highest degree of his ministry.

DiaconateThrough ordination, Deacons are configured to Christ who came to serve. There are Permanent Deacons, who are ordained men, sometimes married, do not intend to become priests. There are also Transitional Deacons, seminarians preparing to become priests. In both instances, the Deacon assists with the celebration of the Eucharist, proclaiming the Gospel, and preaching. Deacons are called to dedicate themselves to works of charity and justice.

Ordenes SagradasUn sacramento - tres grados de comunión y servicio. What is the Meaning of the Red Hat?The zucchetto was originally worn by clergy to cover the tonsure - the bald spot that marked their status as priest or brother - from the weather.

In the 15th century, it began to be used for ceremonial and liturgical occasions. Using the zucchetto to denote clerical rank came into practice. The color of the zucchetto reflects their episcopal order: Bishops wear violet, Cardinals wear red and the Pope wears white.

While the colors clergy wear are a sign of their station, they are a reminder of the call to serve Christ and His Church. Cardinals wear red because they are the closest advisors to the Pope. Wearing red is an outward sign that they are ready to shed their blood to defend the faith.

It is important to remember in this hierarchy, that it is truly Jesus who is the head of the Church. It is in Him that we are all called to love and serve God and neighbor. Therefore, you will notice the zucchetto is removed during the Eucharistic Prayer, this is a sign of respect for Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament.

These men will help him lead the Church.

Named a CardinalCardinals are chosen by the Holy Father to help him in guiding and serving the universal Church. Being named a Cardinal is a high honor that typically comes after many years of humble service to the Church. On October 25, 2020, Pope Francis announced that he had chosen Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory to join the College of Cardinals.

Receiving the CallWhen he was named Cardinal by Pope Francis, Archbishop Gregory received a formal document, called a biglietto - which means “ticket.” He will be enrolled into the College of Cardinals through a special ceremony called a consistory on Saturday, November 28, 2020.

College of CardinalsA “college” is a group of people coming together for a common purpose. The College of Cardinals in the Catholic Church is made up of Cardinals from around the world, who work together with the Pope, and serve as his chief advisors in the government of the Church. They also have the important task of electing a new Pope when the office becomes vacant.

ConsistoryWhen the Pope gathers the College of Cardinals together for an important purpose, it is called a consistory. Cardinal-Designate Gregory will be elevated to Cardinal, along with 12 other men, at a public consistory on November 28, 2020. This consistory is a celebration, and a time of prayer asking the Lord for the grace and strength these men will need as they assume this important new ministry.

Called to Love and ServeOn April 4, 2019, Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory to serve as the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington. Just a few weeks ago, on October 25, 2020 Pope Francis named Archbishop Gregory a Cardinal. In this elevated role, Cardinal-designate Gregory continues to have the primary responsibility to the people in the Archdiocese of Washington. As Cardinal though, he will also serve the universal Church by voting for a new Pope when there is a vacancy and providing advice to the Pope on important issues.

Do you think Cardinal-designate Gregory knew he would grow up to become Cardinal? We can’t always imagine what plan God has for our lives. In the case of Cardinal-designate Gregory, his journey to becoming Cardinal began with his ‘yes’ to God’s calling to become a priest. This ‘yes’ to the vocation to the priesthood led him to receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders and begin his service to the Church.

Like Cardinal-designate Gregory, men around the world arecalled to the Sacrament of Holy Orders. There are three degrees to the Sacrament of Holy Orders – deacon, priest, and bishop. Deacons are married or unmarried men called to serve God by assisting at Mass, giving homilies, and doing acts of service. Priests are called by God to serve His people primarily through the sacraments – celebrating the Eucharist, and the sacraments of baptism, reconciliation, and marriage. Priests give their lives to loving the Church through their vow of celibacy, and selfless service. Bishops (and Archbishops) are priests appointed by the Pope with the responsibility of teaching, sanctifying, and governing parishes in a geographic area called a diocese or archdiocese. All of these men – deacons, priests, and bishop – are living out their ‘yes’ to God to love and serve Him through the vocation God created them for.

What is your Vocation?God created every person to love and serve Him. When we listen to God in prayer, He shows us how he wants us to bring His love to the world. The call we receive from God is our vocation. There are different types of vocations. Some people have a vocation to marriage, some to single life, some to be religious sisters or religious brothers, and some to be priests or deacons. No matter the vocation though, we are all called to love and serve God and neighbor.

Consider your own calling Can you image what plan God has for your future? Take a moment to think about what you feel God hopes for your future.

As we celebrate the unique calling God has given us, let us also offer a prayer of thanksgiving for Cardinal –designate Gregory’s yes, and his faithful service to our Church.

Marked for DiscipleshipArchbishop Gregory has been appointed by Pope Francis to serve the universal Church as Cardinal. He has received this honor because of his faithful discipleship. While continuing to serve as the head of our local Church, he will now also serve as an advisor, along with other Cardinals, to Pope Francis on important issues. As part of the College of Cardinals, he will also vote for a new Pope. But, how did he get to this important role?

Christ calls some men to the vocation of the priesthood. These men will serve the Church through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The Holy Spirit pours out His graces on those who receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders to strengthen them in this vocation. There are three degrees to the Sacrament of Holy Orders – deacon, priest, and bishop. Our bishop, Cardinal-Designate Gregory, first received the Sacrament of Holy Orders when called to the priesthood. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Cardinal-designate Gregory continues to live out his vocation as a disciple of Christ, marked for love and service.

Like Cardinal-designate Gregory, our first vocation is to be disciples of Christ. We receive the graces we need for this vocation through the Holy Spirit - who is strengthen in us through the Sacrament of Confirmation. In Confirmation, the Holy Spirit also imparts upon us an indelible mark - we are marked as chosen for Christ. Claimed by Christ, we have the responsibility live as His disciples all the time – loving and serving God and His Church.

All disciples of Christ rely on the Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen them in their mission.

Take a moment to pray for Cardinal-designate Gregory. Ask the Holy Spirit to grant him the graces he needs for his new role in service to the Church.

We have a new Cardinal!

On October 25, 2020, Pope Francis named Archbishop Gregory a Cardinal! As Cardinal, he will continue to serve as the head of the Church in Washington. Cardinal Gregory will also take on new jobs in serving the Church around the world. He will become special helper to the Pope, and he, with the other Cardinals, will vote for a new Pope when needed.

To show their special role, Cardinals sometimes wear special clothes. The clothes Cardinals wear include the color red. Red is a symbol of a Cardinal’s love for Christ and His Church – even to give their life for the faith.

After he is raised up to the rank of Cardinal, you may see Cardinal Gregory wearing special clothes. You may see him wearing a black robe - trimmed in red – a cross, special hats, and a gold ring. These items show his new role as a Cardinal.

Show your support of our local Shepherd by lighting a candle for him on the day of his elevation.

Say a PrayerOn the day of their elevation, Cardinals profess an oath of love and fidelity to Christ and His Church. They vow to remain faithful and obedient to the Church - defending the faith even to the point of death.

As a family, pray for Cardinal- designate Gregory that the Holy Spirit grant him the graces he needs to faithfully carry out his ministry.
