A PLACE TO CONNECT
A Note from our Pastor:
As we move quickly to the time of Charge Conference and the beginning of
a new year, we begin to make decisions about the Leadership of our
church. It is a great responsibility we ask people to assume when we ask
them to be part of our Leadership Team. It is a responsibility which I hope
is not taken lightly.
In order for a church, or any organization, to grow and remain effective in
their witness to Jesus Christ, it is essential for the mindset of the people in
leadership to not be resistant to change. Change is one of the most difficult
and sometimes the most toxic thing a church can undergo. No one likes to
do things differently. But at times it becomes necessary, if not critical, for
some things to change.
When we start hearing phrases like: “That’s the way we have always done
it!” or “We don’t do it like that here!” or “We tried that once in the 1980’s and
it didn’t work!” we see signs of a church which is not growing. It is a church
which is not open to growth.
I once heard “insanity” defined as “doing the same thing over and over and
expecting something new to happen.” Leadership of our church needs to
have an open mind and the ability to “think outside the box” when it is
required.
Part of the responsibility of Leadership in our church is to recognize leaders
for their faithful service. Many people in our church have done marvelous
things in their work areas. As a congregation, we should be ever vigilant of
these great works and take every opportunity to honor those who work with
such dedication.
It is also Leaderships responsibility to make sure our faithful workers are
not “worked to death.” Burnout of volunteers and staff is a critical issue in
Leadership. When people determine it’s time to do something else, but feel
they are letting the church down by not continuing their position, and they
continue to do the job, it will be hard for them to stay motivated and
continue to do the best job they can.
In these instances, Leadership should be ready and willing to find new
volunteers to accept these positions and allow leaders to step back and
take the well-deserved rest they need with not the least bit of reservations.
Adding to our volunteer base is another of the duties of the Leadership
Team. We are not all gifted with the same abilities. If you have ever noticed
in my office, along the top edge of the bookcases, you will see several
different containers. Some are plastic, some are wood, some are clay,
some are glass, some are old, some are new…Each time I see them I am
reminded we are not all the same. We all come in different “containers” with
different purposes (skills).
If you were in church Sunday you heard me talk about Paul’s letter to the
Corinthian churches. Paul was addressing the issue of people accepting
Christ as Messiah and then just sitting around waiting for the Second
Coming. These people didn’t think they had to do anything once they
accepted the Lordship of Christ.
Paul explained to them they were to continue working until Christ did
return. It didn’t make any difference whether His return was today,
tomorrow, or a thousand years from now-they were to continue to
contribute to the work of the church. I firmly believe Paul’s letter to the
Corinthian church is still relevant today.
If you are asked to be part of the Leadership Team of the church,
prayerfully consider the request. Ask the Lord to show you where, or how,
your talents and gifts might be useful to the mission and ministry of
Prospect United Methodist Church.
Leadership can also open your eyes and minds to the greater work of the
church to the community and the world. Consider being part of this exciting
Team in our church. And as always, continue to pray for the Leadership of
our church.

Don’t forget to vote on Tuesday,
November 3th. Please study the issues
and go to the polls and cast your
ballot. Remember, YOUR VOTE
counts and CAN make a difference.
As you go to vote don’t leave your
Christian values in the car.
On Sunday, November 8th we will
honor and thank all of the servicemen
women, and veterans of Prospect
UMC. The freedoms we enjoy have
been paid for through the men and
women who served and are serving in
our military. We encourage our
veterans to be in attendance so we can
say THANK YOU!
It is that time of year again when we can help kids all over the world
have a great Christmas. Prospect has always been involved and we want
to make our donations this year even greater. Here are some ways you
can help. You can make a box yourself and fill it with objects for a boy
and/or girl and bring it to the church. REMEMBER Do not wrap the box
shut. Samaritans Purse must double check all the boxes so please do not
seal it. Another way you can help out is to donate shoe boxes and or
gifts and the children and youth will pack the presents on November 18.
Lastly you can always donate money to help other purchase gifts or help
with the shipping of the boxes. All the information can be found in the
brochures around the church and online
at http://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child. We want
to donate at least 50 boxes this year and we can't do it without
everyone's help.
Remember, all donations should be in by November 18, 2015.
All ladies of the church are invited to attend the next meeting of the UMW as as we come together Monday, November 9th at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. If you haven't
been to a meeting in a while, this is a great time to get started back. If you are new to Prospect,
please come and spend some time with us and get to know our awesome members. Some of the
things we are planning are the UMW Bazaar and Bake Sale on November 14, and our Christmas
dinner where we fill Christmas bags to deliver to our shut ins. You will love being a part of a
group of women who enjoy fellowship and doing God's work. Childcare can be made available
upon request and a ride can be arranged if you need transportation.
The UMW wishes to THANK EVERYONE who gave coats and jackets and more for the
Children's Home. The collection has been delivered and was very much needed and
appreciated. We continue to pray for these children and the staff.
The Annual UMW Bazaar and Bake Sale will be held along with the Men's Club BBQ on
November 14. All our proceeds go towards local, statewide and global missions. We will have
delicious baked goods for sale and there will be vendors set up offering handmade arts and
crafts, such as woodworking, artisan crafts and jewelry, flavorings, and some seasonal holiday
ware. Hope to see you there!
The Circle of Love enjoyed a great day in October with 27 ladies attending a program
with Marshall Gordon and a lunch afterwards. So thanks for coming, and this is an
invitation to you and to ALL ladies to come to the November 13th Circle of Love. We
always have a good time and welcome new members to come at any time. Come for
coffee and refreshments and stay for a time to connect with other ladies who share a
love of God and each other. It's casual and relaxed and a great way to spend a Friday
morning!
Our program in November will be, "What If" and we will talk about some
hypothetical questions starting with "what if." Some will be fun and funny and some
will be more serious questions that we need to think about from time to time. And
some will lead us into the season of Thanksgiving that is so important to our Christian
walk.
We look forward to seeing you on November 13th.

The Youth did a fantastic job leading worship and a shout out to Logan
for a great sermon. If you see a youth who was involved be sure to let
them know what a great job they did. November a more relaxed month
but come December things are going to get crazy. December 6 the youth
will be putting on our Live Nativity at Hebron. We still need help
financially to pull it off and if you would like to help please contact
Blake Shuler. We will also be doing a Live Nativity on Dec 21 as usual.
The youth choir will be working on the nativity and Christmas carols to
be sung on dates to be announced in December. If you know of a youth
who would like to get involved Youth choir has rehearsals at 4:30 on
Sundays and youth is still starts at 5:45.
SO much is happening in our music ministry at Prospect!
Our fabulous kids’ choir just spent an entire Saturday hard at work creating our video to go along with
our presentation of The Wild West Adventures of the Loaned Manger in December. They were troopers
and did a GREAT job! I can’t wait for everyone to see and hear these kids as they tell a fun story about
the TRUE meaning of Christmas. You don’t want to miss it—its Wednesday, December 16th at 6:00 with
dinner following.
The PYC (Prospect’s all new YOUTH CHOIR) did a wonderful job of leading worship during Youth
Sunday on October 25th. I know you all were blessed by their voices and by their spirits!! I cannot wait to
see where the Lord takes this ministry….we are now working on some things for Christmas and also on
plans for Dinner Theatre in March! All youth in middle and high school are welcomed to join in. We meet
to rehearse on Sunday afternoons at 4:30 just before the Youth have snack supper. Also, look for the PYC
on Facebook!
The Chancel Choir is hard at work on our Christmas Cantata which will be presented on Sunday morning,
December 13th during the 11:00 service. I hope you all will make plans to join us for that special
celebration of Christ’s birth. The program is called One Silent Night.
Love to all our church family during this beautiful season. May your hearts be full to overflowing with
Thanksgiving for our many blessings, and may your face be ever turned to the Son.
In Him,
Dru DeWitt

evening, November 2 at 7 PM in the fellowship
hall to wrap up plans on the Annual BBQ soon

we have 8 weekdays before cooking starts on
Friday.
All are welcome to attend and you might just
meet your best friends there, as I have.
