The Pragmatic Endeavor Scopes of Enterprise Pursuits (PESEP) framework is a very valuable tool that helps define and assess in a cohesive manner important Enterprise Business Architecture Concepts such as: Mission Statements, Objectives, Road-maps, Capabilities and Processes.
Enterprise Pursuits
• Within any Enterprise Business Architecture there are five particularly important concepts that can be classified according to the following two general aims: doing the right things for the enterprise and doing things right within the enterprise. Doing the right things for the enterprise entails determining its desired direction in terms of Mission Statements, Objectives, and various Road-maps. Doing things right for the enterprise is about enabling and sustaining the proper Capabilities and Processes that realize the desired enterprise direction. Defining Mission Statements, Objectives, Road-maps, Capabilities and Processes are important Enterprise Pursuits.

Enterprise Pursuits
• Asserting that the enterprise is doing the right things for its success has a higher degree of uncertainty than determining whether or not it is doing things right when leveraging its capabilities and executing its processes. Therefore, the Enterprise Pursuits that this article presents spread along an uncertainty spectrum that is highest with Mission Statements and lowest with Processes. Uncertainty can be managed by explicitly linking an uncertain Pursuit to the next more certain one. So Mission Statements must translate into Objectives that direct Road-maps which describe changes to Capabilities which are realized through Processes.

• Assessing how well Pursuits are achieved is done using different qualifiers for each Pursuit type:
• Qualitative Measures for Mission Statements
• Critical Success Factors for Objectives
• Prioritization of Value, Performance, and Maturity Assessment Metrics for Road-maps
• Value, Performance, and Maturity Assessment Metrics for Capabilities
• Key Performance Indicators for Processes

Endeavor Scopes
• Doing the right things and doing things right for an enterprise can be achieved at the following distinct Endeavor Scopes: Strategic, Tactical, Operational, and Clerical. Generally speaking, at the Strategic scope the enterprise decides what problems to solve and what opportunities to seize in order to achieve given Outcomes; at the Tactical scope the enterprise decides what resources to employ and control to generate particular Outputs; Operational scope is concern with defining the Methods needed to follow selected Transformation Paths of inputs into outputs; at the Clerical Scope the enterprise Executes Steps needed to run its operation.
