The UK’s 7,000 strong co-operative sector is performing well. Our strong bases in retail and agriculture are continuing to deliver, while new sectors like energy and education are becoming embedded – and we are seeing a wave
of co-ops emerge among tech, digital and creative freelancers.
It is important that we are not complacent however. Brexit Britain is characterised by economic uncertainty and, following immediately from the economic slowdown of recent years, there seems to be little let-up for those running a business.
Importantly for co-ops, the challenges of running a successful business must be complemented by co-operative excellence, from effective member-led governance to living your co-op values. That’s why events like the Practitioners Forum are so important. Where else could you spend the day in
the same room as 150 other professionals working in co-operatives? And where else could you spend a dedicated chunk of time discussing shared concerns with peers from co-ops working right across the economy?
Today, among many other things, we will see finance professionals discussing accounting standards, HR leaders learning about being a fair employer, governance specialists exploring best practice for boards, communications practitioners discussing how to develop a co-op brand, and membership professionals focusing on campaigns to engage members.
Practitioners Forum brings together professionals working in key business functions in co-ops to learn from experts, share best practice with peers and build their networks. I hope you have an inspiring and productive day.
