Weare very excited to again present a world-class slate of speakers and workshops for the 2018TODS Meeting. Our 2018 exhibit hours are Thursday, October 18 5:00pm – 8:00pm and Friday,October 19, from 10:00am – 6:00pm. Be sure to come early to avoid the rush and check out the

exhibits Thursday before the speakers start at 6:00pm! It has proven to be quality one-on-one time to askquestions of company representatives and check out their latest offerings. The ever-popular Thursday night Supplier Showcase events are back once again offering a variety of pre-

sentations. Be sure to check out the variety of interesting topics offered. Don’t miss our Friday evening Tradeshow Reception, where you can visit with both exhibitors and col-

leagues, participate in the Silent Auction fundraiser, and enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres. The Silent Auction makes an annualdonation toward the dentistry-related needs of a local charity or organization. The updated total of monies raised since 2005 isover an amazing $177,000! We offer our most sincere thanks and congratulations to Ms. Gayle Faigan, TODS Chair of Fundrais-ing, and her team of volunteers for coordinating the Silent Auction. Please take a moment to thank Gayle and her team for theirdedication and hard work while you browse the silent auction.Funds from the 2017 Silent Auction were distributed among the purchase of dental health care bags for adults and children

which were distributed to food banks across the region, PET Scanner fundraiser at KGH, and the TODS Endowment Fund! Anamazing amount of work went into creating these dental health care bags over many days. We offer our most heartfelt thanksto those very caring and dedicated volunteers. We leave a valuable legacy of our TODS Meetings when we support the SilentAuction, so go ahead and make a bid or check out the incredibly popular mystery wall of wine!Back for 2018, Okanagan College invites all Certified Dental Assisting Alumni, 1974 to 2018, to join them on Friday, Octo-

ber 19 at their hospitality suite in the Monashee Room. We continue to have overwhelmingly positive feedback about the Hands-On Clinics offered at TODS. This year, we are of-

fering six workshops during the three days of the TODS Meeting with something for everyone! Please register early for these clin-ics. As in previous years, there have been waiting lists! Our 2018 TODS Meeting Hands-On Clinics are pleased to present Dr.David Landwehr; Ms. Nancy Dewhirst, RDH; St. John Ambulance CPR (full course) for Health Care Professionals (required nowfor all minimal sedation); and, once again, our extremely popular Provisional Restorations Workshop by Ms. Lian Walraven,CDA, with three workshops for certified dental assistants. Be sure to sign up quickly as our workshops are very popular and sellout fast!If you have any feedback or suggestions for making our TODS Meetings even better, please don’t hesitate to let me know. After

your last lecture on Friday afternoon, don’t forget to attend the Tradeshow Reception for some of the most amazing appies! I’llsee you there!Thank you to the TODS organizing committee, and Alison Hall, Lane Shupe and their team – who truly are exceptional – for

coordinating another successful TODS Meeting. Thank you to all of our exhibitors for their support of the TODS Meeting. Pleasetake the time to visit our exhibitors’ booths and learn about their products and services.

Enjoy your weekend! Sincerely,

Dr. Brandon SchiffnerPresident – Thompson Okanagan Dental Society

In the usual course of my business we are asked to assistwhen a sudden disability or death of the practice ownerhas occurred. The initial reaction and concern from the disabled practi-

tioner, staff, family or advisors is that the practice is going tosuffer without the presence of the principal doctor and thatpatients will seek other providers. Most conclude that a busi-ness disaster is imminent. Much to their surprise, historyproves them all to be incorrect. Our first advice is to install a professional locum doctor to

attend to the patient needs. This is critical and not be ignored.Share a copy of this article with your staff, family and advisorsthat I wrote 18 years ago: roicorp.com/the-locum-lifestyleand go to www.mdpcorp.ca to learn more about locums. As difficult as it may be to accept this advice, it has to be

business as usual for the preservation of the practice to as-sure the staff that their jobs are secure and that all practice fi-nancial obligations can be met. A short, temporary closure ofthree to five days is understandable and expected, but afterthat the practice must be open for regular business hours atall costs! And then a very unusual phenomenon begins to reveal

itself. Empathetic goodwill is my descriptor to explain why peo-

ple go out of their way to show support for the business andthe business owner.Once the initial shock of the tragedy or the situation is ab-

sorbed, we often find that the staff begins to show incrediblesupport for the business and they actually go above and be-yond the call of duty. This is a natural empathetic responsethat happens after people adjust to the new norm. Onewhere you, the principal, is no longer present. We also learn that patients may show extra enthusiasm for

helping your practice through the tribulations and they re-spond by honouring appointments.Once some time has passed, usually about a month, we

see that the practice, with the support of the staff, the loyaltyof the patients, and the aid of a professional locum, is actu-ally doing as well and on some occasions even better than itdid under the guidance of the previous owner. Yes, betterthan when you, the principal, were present!

This phenomenon can be further explained by the fact thatpeople genuinely care and want to help those in need. The summation of this discussion and this article is to sug-

gest that if something terrible should happen to a businessowner, you will be shocked, amazed, and surprised at howtheir staff’s loyalty and their patients’ support impacts thebusiness in an incredible way, and their practice remains vi-brant, productive and is able to meet its debt and overheadobligations. The long-term result of taking the actions out-lined here is that when it becomes necessary to sell the prac-tice, it will have held its true monetary value.
