Powertite is a registered trademark of Appleton.
Plugs:Octagonal style (Patented) for a firm and sure
grip when connecting or disconnecting is fea-tured on both plug and cable connectorbodies. Insulators have high mechanical anddielectric strength and Low Arc Tracking.Increased Safety type box terminals withgripper ribs securely clamp around conductors.Funneled conductor entry chambers lead all properly strippedconductors into terminals simultaneously. NEMA 4X ratingwhen inserted into VersaMate receptacle and locking ring istightened.
Receptacles:Exclusive Patented Breech-Lock capserves as either flip lid or screw cover.Receptacle is NEMA 3R with lid snappedshut or NEMA 4X with lid turned shut or
when VersaMate plug is inserted and lockingring tightened. Patented notch in cap armholds cap open for easy plug insertion ormaintenance. Patented pin design uses slotted spring clip whichavoids excessive wear while providing continuous electrical pinto sleeve contact. VersaMate receptacles use the sameIncreased Safety terminals and funnel design asVersaMate plugs.
Cable Clamping Assembly:Plugs and cable connectors aresupplied with an exclusive neopreneOnion Skin peel-away type grom-met. The VersaRange cable clampsystem captures cable with fourgrip points using only two tighten-
ing screws. Clamp guide assembly provides a firm fit over awide range of cable diameters. Non-removable set screws pre-vent clamp guide assembly from backing out. Clamps havesmooth contoured shoulder design to prevent snags or damagewhen moving equipment.
Back Boxes:VersaMate back boxes come in a variety ofmounting styles. Exclusive blind recepta-cle mounting holes prevent moisture fromentering box via thread cavities. Boxescome with a green grounding screw.

Increased Safety type termi-
nals reduce connectionfatigue. Screws do not contactor machine conductor and areunder spring tension to reduceloosening and pullout.
Conventional screw typeterminals. Screws machine(grind or fray) conductor.
Screws are not under tensioand more easily loosen fromheating and cooling cyclesor from vibration. Screws cafall out (and be lost) duringinitial shipment-requiresreassembly.
Breech-Lock design servesas both flip lid or screw coverstyle. Special notch in lid armholds cover open to ease plug
insertion or maintenance.
Conventional caps: usermust choose between fliplid's convenience or screwcover's better sealing capa
bilities. Broken chains canmean lost covers.
Exclusive "Onion Skin" style gas-ket assures a tight seal aroundcable. Skin layers are removedfrom a single gasket to adjust forvarious cable diameters.
Multiple gaskets requiretrial & error sizing tobe sure of best fit andseal.
Versatile range Cable Clampsystem captures cable at fourgrip points using only twoscrews. Smooth contoureddesign avoids snags whenmoving equipment.
Standard clamps squeezeand pinch cable. Protrudingscrews snag or scratchwhen moving equipment.Other clamp systems withmultiple screws are difficultto tighten evenly.

R E V E R S E S E R V I C E : S 3 9Add suffix S39 forfactory Reverse Serviceof receptacles, plugsor connectors.Receptacles or connec-tors are assembled withplug interiors whileplugs are assembledwith receptacle interiors. For applications wherethe plug is energized(i.e. from a generator) tofeed a non-energizedreceptacle. Preventseasy contact with energized exposed pins. This conversioncan be performed in the field with a complementary plug &receptacle (30A to 100A devices shown on pages PR6-8).200A Amp devices shown on page PR9 are a factory-onlyoption. Reverse Service is not for hazardous locations.
Style I
In a Style I plug, the cables ground conductor is bondedto the plug housing by means of solderless connector. Thereceptacle is grounded by being part of a grounded conduitsystem. Upon insertion, detent springs in the receptaclehousing contact and ground the plug housing before current
carrying poles. All poles are current carrying.
G R O U N D I N G :To minimize the danger of electrical shock when utilizingportable equipment, the National Electrical Code requiresexposed metal parts be grounded if operated at more than150 volts to ground. The VersaMate plug & receptacle sys-tem is available in two grounding styles. Please note Style Iand II devices cannot be intermated.
P O L A R I Z E D O P T I O N : S 3 7Add suffix S37 for special polarity.
Can prevent connection between mismatched voltages orfrequencies in areas where devices of the same amperage, poles and grounding style are used. Receptacle or connectointeriors are rotated 22-1/2 to the right; plug is rotated opposite to match. This is a factory only option.
Style II
In a Style II plug, the cables ground conductor is bondedto the extra grounding pole and to the plug housing via abonding jumper. The receptacle has a matching groundingpole connected to the system ground conductor which isfurther tied to the grounded conduit system via a bondingjumper. Upon insertion, detent springs in the receptaclehousing contact and ground the plug housing; then theextra long ground pole connects before the currentcarrying poles engage. The Style II ground pole makes firs
and breaks last.

Details of SafetyTime Delay Feature
The key slot provided in the receptacleengages the key of the plug permittingentrance of the plug in the receptaclein only one position. See steps 1-4.
The contacts are enclosed in longaccurate insulating cavities. It is inthese cavities that the arcs are extin-guished. All contacts are made throughround tellurium copper tubing which isextra heavy to withstand arcing asrequired on the various ampere ratings.
Both plugs and receptacles areequipped with an extra long groundingpole which establishes groundingbefore the power contacts areengaged. These grounding poles arealso the last to break contact. Thisassures bonding of the portable deviceto the electrical conduit system.
Selection
Modifications are available by adding
the following suffix to the catalog num-
ber. (Note: It must be added to both
the plug and the receptacle so they
will mate.)

The ACCEPTOR UGP/UGR Plug andReceptacle system, with its unique, patented design, is interchangeable1with other NEMA bladed type explo-sion-proof and dust ignition proofdevices. The series has been testedand classified for use with Crouse-Hinds Ark-Gard2 and Appleton U-Line plugs and receptacles in haz-ardous locations. Now available inGFCI version. See page PR26.
How The Acceptor System WorksACCEPTOR receptacles contain anintegral switch which must be closed toenergize the circuit. The design
permits only an approved plug to beenergized. To actuate the switch, theplug must be inserted and rotatedclockwise approximately 45o. The plugwill lock into this position preventingaccidental disengagement. To remove, simply push in then turn the plug coun-terclockwise and pull straight out.
Plugs and receptacles may be usedwhere interchangeable bladed devicesare needed in locations made haz-ardous by the presence of flammablegases or vapors, combustible dusts oreasily ignitable fibers and flyings.
Plug can serve to provide power
for portable equipment used in bothhazardous and non-hazardous areas.
