Disturbances Caused In The Antarctic Ecosystem

Global Warming and climate change in Antarctica has resulted in retreating glaciers, more snowfall. Winter sea-ice has reduced, which acts as a refuge for young krill, providing them both food and shelter.

Adelie penguin population has shrunk during the past 25 years in response to the decline in winter sea-ice habitat.

Researchers say that Antarctica is facing ecological devastation from bacteria on the tourists' boots. Almost 15,00 tourists visit Antarctica every summer. Dangerous bacteria and pathogens are being introduced in the Antarctic environment which can prove to be dangerous for its wildlife.

Phytoplankton form the basic food for krill. It has been proved by research that increased UV radiation as a result of ozone depletion over Antarctica can result 8.5 per cent in phytoplankton production. This will upset the entire Antarctic food web
