Canale and Swain (1980) defined

communicative competence in terms of three

components:[5]

1. Grammatical (Systemic) competence: words

and rules

2. Sociolinguistic competence: appropriateness

3. Strategic competence: appropriate use of

communication strategies


A LEARNER SHOULD KNOW:

To develop strategies to associate the letter´s sound with the writing.

To know some strategies to manage the intonation according with the speaker intention.

It is difficult to domain whole the pronunciation rules.

A NATIVE SPEAKER:

Learn the pronunciation

at early age and use the

language without

explain the rules.


A learner should

manage all the

morphemic rules.

English Morphology

seems easy to learn,

but can be difficult

for foreign learners.

A native speaker

knows the way to

form words by adding

morphemes.


An English learner

should study

words´use and

function.

When a native

speaker discovers

that his/her language

has rules and

words´functions

he/she is surprised,

because learned the

language

unconciously.


A learner should:

To know the context

use of the words.

Conventional rather

than accuracy.

Memorize difficult

words for non native

speakers.

A native speaker use

the vocabulary with a

conventional way.


Sociolinguistic

competence asks:

Which words and

phrases fit this setting

and this topic? How can

I express a specific

attitude (courtesy,

authority, friendliness,

respect) when I need

to? How do I know what

attitude another person

is expressing?


Is knowing how to use and respond to language appropriately, given the setting, the topic, and the relationships among the people communicating.

A learner should establish:

1.To use language rules to communicate and to understand the speaker´s intention.

2. Speech rules: How are words, phrases and sentences put together to create conversations, speeches, email messages, newspaper articles?


Strategic competence

asks: How do I know

when I’ve

misunderstood or when

someone has

misunderstood me?

What do I say then? How

can I express my ideas

if I don’t know the

name of something or

the right verb form to

A learner should:

Know how to recognize and repair

communication breakdowns, how to work

around gaps in one’s knowledge of the

language, and how to learn more about the

language and in the context.

Practice speaking to learn the language and

words conventional uses.
