How Colleges Evaluate Applications
Have a one on one conversation with your coach and counselor about your interests and potential. All potential athletes must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse after junior year and can do so at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net A 9-11th grade transcript must be sent to the Clearinghouse (Use the yellow form). An official SAT from Collegeboard and/or ACT from the ACT.ORG must be send to NCAA. A certain number of core courses are required for Division I and Division II sports. Become familiar with the NCAA website to stay informed of the ever changing guidelines. (http://www.ncaa.org/) A final transcript must be sent to the Clearinghouse after high school graduation.

PLANNING A SUCCESSFUL COLLEGE
VISIT
The Formal Visit Take a campus tour.
Have an interview with admissions officer.
Get business cards and names of people you meet for future contacts.
Pick up information about scholarships and financial aid.
Participate in a group information session at the admissions office.
Make an appointment to sit in on a class of a subject that interests you.
Talk to a professor in your chosen major or in a subject that interests you.
Talk to coaches of sports in which you might participate.
Talk to a student or counselor in the career center.
Scan bulletin boards to see what day-to-day student life is like.
•Meet with your school counselor. •Ask teachers to upload letters of recommendation into Naviance. •Take SAT/ACT tests again and send your scores to schools officially. •Review and finalize your resume •Review and finalize your essays •BEGIN filling out applications either online or on paper.
• Your applications need to be in by Nov 15. • Confirm your deadlines. • Make sure you have your letters of
recommendation submitted to your counselor and/or uploaded to Naviance.
• Start to mail/electronically send applications – Inform the counselor’s office with pink/blue supplement forms available in PPS office.
• Take SAT/ACT and make sure your scores were officially sent to each one of your colleges.
• Parent Financial Aid Night in December.
Sample college costs
• Tuition $4,000 -$50,000 per year • Testing Fees SAT, ACT, SAT II, AP exams, etc. $45-$100 each • Application Fees $35-$100 each • Registration Deposits $100-$500 • Lab and Activities Fees $1,000 per year • Dorm housing costs $10,000-$15,000 per year • Food costs $3,000 per semester If you live on campus you are REQUIRED to buy a meal plan. There is no “free lunch” plan. • If you don’t dorm you still need lunch money • Book costs $1,000 per year • Supply costs $500 approx. • Lap top, paper, thumb drives and phone bill, etc. • Transportation fees • Car: gas, insurance or bus/train costs • Insurance costs • If you don’t have insurance you have to pay the college a fee $900 approx.
• Talk to your guidance counselor about signing up for the NCAA Clearing House and the SAT exam. This should be completed by December of senior year.
• Talk to your coach about what level you should play at in
college- Division I, II, III or junior college.
• Decide with your parents if you will be attending a local
college or one where you will board. • Sit down with Mr. Niven to discuss your plans.
