PPL (A) Theory Training Program

This theory training program is in accordance with comission regulation 1178 / 2011 and national regulations TRG M1-1 (11.12.1999), TRG M1-11 (19.11.2007), TRG T1-17 (11.12.1992) and PEL M2-92 (14.11.2013).

Aim of this training program

After this theory course student shall have good knowledge and understanding of aviation theory subjects on the level that is required from a private pilot license holder.

Contents of the training program

This training program contains the following subjects and amounts of lessons.One lesson is 50 minutes long. Each subject has 1 lesson exam and 1 lesson feedback or in smaller subjects only 1 lesson for exam and feedback included in the number of lessons.

Theory training rules and limitations

After each subject an exam is held to test the level of students knowledge and understanding.

Before taking an exam student shall have completed all theory lessons of that subject and compensated possible absences.

To pass the exam student must answer correct at least 75% of the questions in the exams.

Teachers must fill up documentation of all theory training immediately after training.

Credit given for previous flight experience

In case student has a valid pilots license or previous certified theory studies they can be credited according to FCL.035.

Additional training/absence compensation

100% attendance is required for all theory training. In case student is absent from theory lessons, an adequate amount of additional training shall be given or in some cases, if considered suitable by the Head of Training, absent lessons can be compensated by self study exercises given by the instructor of the subject. The amount of lessons to be compensated by these exercises shall never be more than 30% of the total amount of lessons in that precise subject.

All extra lessons and exercises must be documented by the teacher.

010 Air Law and ATC Procedures 15 lessons + exam + feedback

GENERAL GUIDANCE & STUDENTS REQUIRED LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE

In this subject the students shall be familiarized well with the most important aspects of aviation legislation and regulations. Students must know the rules of the air fluently. Teachers main task is to point out the important parts from the regulations and give practical example situation how the regulations are applied during flight preparation and flight operations.

STUDY- & TEACHING MATERIAL

Studying material to be used consists of the initial material that is delivered to the students in the beginning of the training. This initial material is detailed in the Training manual (koulutuskäsikirja) section D 3.

In addition to this the teachers own lecture notes or slide show may be used.

ATTACHING THE SUBJECT TO THE REST OF THE TRAINING

This subject should be completed among the first subjects of the theoretical training.Teacher should give examples of radio phraseology, clearances and most important operational procedures among all the legislation, so to prepare the student for next subjects.E.g. this subject gives good base for 090 Communication studies as students are already familiar with certain terms like clearances and controlled/uncontrolled airspace terms.

ITEMS OF THIS SUBJECT

In this subject in addition to the items listed below following subjects shall be added:- Finnish aviation regulations and aviation law- Regulations concerning private aviation, private aviation insurances, availability of aerodromes for different operations- Regulations concerning international flights (customs, passport control, international airports)- Aircraft refuelling regulations

020 Aircraft General Knowledge 18 lessons + exam + feedback

GENERAL GUIDANCE & STUDENTS REQUIRED LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE

After this subject students shall know the basic operating principles of a piston engine aircrafts engine, electrics, instruments, structures and other systems. Student must also know the basic determination principles of airworthiness and certificates.Teachers task is to make students understand how they shall use the aircraft and its systems and especially why they are used and operated in such manner. Too much detail information should be avoided unless the information is of importance in order to understand the principles well.

STUDY- & TEACHING MATERIAL

Studying material to be used consists of the initial material that is delivered to the students in the beginning of the training. This initial material is detailed in the Training manual (koulutuskäsikirja) section D 3.

In addition to this the teachers own lecture notes or slide show may be used.Also a real aircraft or aircraft parts can be used as tools of teaching and explaining.

ATTACHING THE SUBJECT TO THE REST OF THE TRAINING

This subject should be completed among the first subjects of the theoretical training to give the basis of airplane knowledge and understanding of its functions.

030 Flight Performance and Planning 6 lessons + exam

GENERAL GUIDANCE & STUDENTS REQUIRED LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE

Student shall be made familiar with the basic performance and mass calculations when preparing a flight. Teacher shall clearly explain the required items and then give students enough supervised practice work to make sure that the students know the required procedures are calculations. In case time permits, some general flight planning may also be included into this subjects. General flight-, route- and fuel planning is studied thoroughly in 060 Navigation.

Studying material to be used consists of the initial material that is delivered to the students in the beginning of the training. This initial material is detailed in the Training manual (koulutuskäsikirja) section D 3.

In addition to this the teachers own lecture notes or slide show may be used.

ATTACHING THE SUBJECT TO THE REST OF THE TRAINING

Teacher shall revise students of the basic aspects of principles of flight and also navigation in case general flight planning is conducted. This theory subject should be completed when at least the subjects required for first solo flight are completed.

After this subject students shall have basic knowledge and understanding of human physiology related to aviation. Emphasis should be put on the risk factors e.g. hypoxia, incapasitation etc. Teacher shall give clear examples of situations and circumstances where these risk factor could have an effect on flight safety.

This subject should be studied among the last subjects of the theory training, even though being an important subject it self. Students are able to get the most out of this subject when studied after all the basic theory knowledge.

After these lessons students shall be able to make basic determinations and interpretations of the weather, weather forecasts and its effects on flight safety. Teacher shall make sure that the education is not too scientifical. In this subject the items listed below must all be met. FCL requirements are extended with national requirements based on TRG T1-17 (11.12.1992).

Of this subject there has to be two different examinations.- Written exam concerning electris, radio equiments, regulations concerning radiotelephony and use of radio equipments.- Oral RTF exam to test that student is capable of handling normal RTF- communication situations and emergency- and urgency RTF as far as it is required from a PPL (A) holder.

Instructor of this subject shall be a holder of a flight instructor rating, an air traffic controller license or a flight information service officer license and in addition at least ICAO proficiencty level 5 on the language(s) for which this training is given for.

Basic Instrument Flying 4 lessons + exam

GENERAL GUIDANCE & STUDENTS REQUIRED LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE

In this subject students must get the basic theoretical knowledge of how to control the airplane by using instruments only. Teacher should very much emphasize the risks and dangers if instruments are not used for airplane control when visual references are lost.

STUDY- & TEACHING MATERIAL

Studying material to be used consists of the initial material that is delivered to the students in the beginning of the training. This initial material is detailed in the Training manual (koulutuskäsikirja) section D 3.

In addition to this the teachers own lecture notes or slide show may be used.

ATTACHING THE SUBJECT TO THE REST OF THE TRAINING

This subject should be completed among the last subjects of the theoretical training.
