    The Tank Chair

1 The Tank Chair is a new type of wheelchair. This unique chair uses tracks instead of

tires or wheels, just like a tank. It is a custom off-road wheelchair that can go almost

anywhere outdoors. The Tank Chair can go through streams, mud, snow, sand, and gravel. Its

rubber tracks and powerful electric motors make it possible to even go up and down stairs!

2 As with many inventions, the Tank Chair came from necessity. Brad and Liz Soden

were involved in an accident that left Liz unable to walk. She then had to rely on a

    wheelchair for mobility.

3 One day, while Liz was trying to get a better view of a herd of elk, her wheelchair

became stuck in the mud. This event and the familys love of the great outdoors led to a

solution that would allow Liz to participate in outdoor activities like she used to before theaccident.

4 For two years, Brad Soden attempted several designs such as bigger wheels and

more powerful motors, but he had no success. One day, his father-in-law suggested using

tracks like tanks have. That was the suggestion Brad needed to complete his dream. He

created the model of the Tank Chair.

Directions: With these practice questions, you will show how well you can read andunderstand written English. There are two reading selections and some questions about eachone. For each question, mark the letter of the correct answer on your answer sheet.

needs. Then, he makes a Tank Chair that will allow them the opportunity to do things

family is that they are helping others.

    Sightseeing in Puerto Rico

1 Rebeca was visiting her cousin Javier in Puerto Rico. Javier was eager to show

Rebeca some of the most interesting sights on his island home. He had told her Puerto Rico

has mountains, rainforests, caves, beaches, and a small desert. She couldnt believe that one

island had it all. Javier drew a map to show where some of his favorite places were. Today,

they would all be going to see Javiers favorite spot on the islandthe caves in Ro Camuy

    Cave Park.

2 The family reached the huge park set in a rich, green area just after 9:00 a.m.

First, they watched a video about the caves. Then they put on safety helmets and got on the

trolley1. The trolley took them through the park where they saw many different tropical

plants. Rebeca was amazed by all the abundance; so much green surrounded them. Later,

they walked down to see the Camuy River that runs underground.

3 After the tour, Rebeca and her family walked toward Clara Cave. Rebeca had

never seen such a large cave before. As she entered it, she was amazed by what was

concealed inside; pointy stalagmites2 [pronunciation: stuh-lag-myts] were hidden from theoutside world. They rose high up toward the caves ceiling. It was a sight she would

    probably never forget.
