Vol.26, Issue 8 August 2020 Monthly Newsletter “Uncomfortable”
Uncomfortable, that word could describe life in many ways nowadays. Uncomfortable, that’s what many people have felt about staying distant from others, wearing masks and not shaking hands. Uncomfortable, that’s how others felt about worshiping in the parking lot. Trying to see people through the windshield of their cars was uncomfortable, and making sure that sermon notes didn’t float off in the wind was uncomfortable also. How about conversations in American culture today: conversations about the Black Lives Matter movement or statues being torn down or “CHOP” zones or the cancel culture or the 2020 election? All of those conversations seem to be uncomfortable because emotions and manipulative “facts” flow freely and frequently. And that’s not all. We’re already deliberating the next phases of an uncomfortable life as we imagine the school year. Many parents are wondering what to do with the feeling of discomfort about sending a child to school. Others have experienced the challenges of home schooling and are ready for school to resume quickly! So many things are not happening: a year without graduations, vacations, concerts and maybe a year without football. In Green Bay, that would certainly be an uncomfortable year. Speaking of uncomfortable years, the Bible is filled with uncomforta-ble years. Israel’s years of slavery were more than “uncomfortable.” The captive years in Babylon and the wandering in the wilderness also serve as examples. But in the midst of all this discomfort, God speaks a message of comfort to His people. Isaiah wrote these words for that very purpose. “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jeru-salem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand dou-ble for all her sins” (Isaiah 40:1-2) I recall reading those words at the funeral of Mary Ward. Yes, we all had masks and sanitizer and distancing and discomfort at the funeral home, AND yes, we all received the Lord’s great comfort of heaven. In these days of discomfort, it would serve us well to turn toward His words of comfort and to turn others there as well. How refreshing those words of comfort would be to just about anyone these days. See you in church … Pastor Malme

Scrip Update
We are excited to share that physical Scrip cards will once again be available. Moving forward, the process for receiving physical cards will be as follows: • ALL orders must be placed in advance. In order to limit contact,
on-site sales will no longer be available. The Ministry Office will no longer handle Scrip orders. All orders and pick ups will be taken care of through the Welcome Center as explained below.
• All orders MUST be received by 10:30 am Sunday morning and will then be available for pick up at the Welcome Center the following Friday from 8 am - noon; or Sunday from 9:45 - 10:30 only.
• Placing orders can be done in one of two ways― Families are encouraged to order online at http://
www.shopwithscrip.com using Pilgrim’s enrollment code 579BFD4D913. Orders must be paid via PrestoPay which allows convenient payment through an account or credit card of your designation. Checks will not be accepted for online orders, and any order submitted for payment by check will be canceled.
A physical/paper order form accompanied with a payment.
We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time and look forward to serving you again.
New Wednesday Video Series to Begin in August
Starting Wednesday, August 12th, a new video sermon series called
Patience & Perfection: Finding Peace in God’s Plan for You! will be online at pilgrimluth.org along with a study guide. The book will be available for purchase. In this life, we’ll never be perfect. We take one step toward perfection and two steps back, losing confidence in ourselves with each movement. We might lose patience with ourselves—can’t we just be perfect already!?—but God gently smiles and continues walking with us.
While you can’t know all that God plans to do with and for you, you can trust in His perfect plan and His will for you in this life. God is slowly but consistently sanctifying you. He is patient with you. He loves you. And He declares you perfect in Christ.

Backpack Event for ALL
PreSchool - 6th
Grade Students
Moms and dads, please encourage your children bring their backpacks to church on the weekend of August 24nd/25rd. A special back pack tag with a scripture blessing for parents to share with their child will be offered for all school-aged children in grades Preschool - 6th grade.
The children will each receive a backpack name tag and the parents will receive a backpack blessing sheet. This sheet is made up of ten cards - each containing a Bible verse with encouraging words to be used throughout the school year. Our Backpack of Blessings will be available at all services (at both sites) the weekend of August 25th. For any questions contact the Ministry Office at 965-2233.
August P.A.C.K. Event Backpack
& Supplies Giveaway
During the month of July, Pilgrim has been busily collecting school supplies to hand out to families of school aged children. Members donated in one of three ways―they took a backpack & supplies list and returned it when completed; they took a supplies list and returned the bag of purchased items; or they donated $25 toward the purchase of supplies from the list. We are all set to hand out the backpacks on Saturday, August 8th at 11:00 am. at the Pick ‘n Save on Lombardi Ave. The need is great for school supplies, but an even greater need is for sharing the Gospel with them. Every backpack will contain a New Testament and a P.A.C.K. sharing card which also serves as an invite to come and learn more about the love that Jesus has for them. Questions? Contact Lee Larsen 264-4159 or Tracy Wahlen 676-7337.
The goal was to fill 246 back-packs to share with those in need in our community.

at 5:00 - 9:00 pm “Hello all Pilgrim Family! The Trustees Need You!!” At our last Trustees meeting we selected
August 18th, 20th and 25th at 5:00 - 9:00 pm to wash windows and window frames on the school. Volunteers are needed to put some elbow grease into this short project. Materials and equipment will be supplied. The Trustees will have a few people there to direct. We have selected a contractor to have the caulking replaced on the windows to stop leaks that have started in classrooms and the office. This is for your Pilgrim School! Just show up! We will wear masks and socially distance as this is required. There are plenty of win-dows that are further than 6 feet apart! Thanks for your help in this! God Bless and Best Regards,

Wisconsin Cultural Indicators by Dale Bartel, Parish Education
Wisconsin Family Council is a non-partisan, not-for-profit policy organization. The 2019 edition of Wis-consin Cultural Indicators brings together data regarding the health and well being of our state. This month’s focus is on birth rate, infant mortality and sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) in Wisconsin.
Birth Rate: In 1960, there were 99,493 live births compared with 64,994 in 2017. In 1960, there were 25.1 live births per 1000 with 23.7 per 1000 in the United States. In 2017, there were 11.2 live births per 1000 compared with 11.8 live births in the United States. Between 1960 and 2017, the Wisconsin birthrate decreased by 55%.
Here’s some good news: Infant mortality rate in 1960 was 2,173 compared with 415 in 2016. This is a 72% decrease. The births to teens 15-19 years old was 9,610 in 1970 compared to 2,591 in 2017. This is a 70%
decrease.
Single Parenting: In 1970, the number of births to unmarried women was 9,610 compared to 24,397 in 2017. In 1970, 8 % of all births were to unmarried women compared with thirty-eight percent in 2017.
STD’s (chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis): In 2000, there were 370 STD’s per 100,000 population compared with 630 in 2017. In 2017, there were 27,287 cases reported in Wisconsin. Of the reported cases, 63% were female
and 37% were male.
Psalm 127:3-5a states: “Behold children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them.”

Lutheran Indian Ministries by Nannette Hoppe
Lutheran Indian Ministries (LIM) is the focus for "Coins for Christ" this month. Have you noticed the sign "Oneida Indian Reservation" and thought about the occasion we have for Indian ministry at our doorstep? What a great opportunity we have to respond and become involved in this effort here at home. The MISSION of Lutheran Indian Ministries (LIM) is to PROCLAIM the Gospel of Jesus Christ with Native American Peoples, DISCIPLE Native leaders to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with Native American Peoples, and ADDRESS SOCIAL SUFFERINGS in a way that values Native cultures. Hopelessness, despair, loneliness, abuse, addiction, and trauma are the clouds that descend on Native American young people and often lead them to suicide as a last resort. Several ministries that focus on addressing these issues include Bob Prue's (Rosebud Sioux) ministry to the Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas where almost 1,000 Native American students from 145 tribes attend. In Navajo, NM, Pastor Tim Norton ministers at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. The Phoenix, AZ ministry opened recently where it has a growing relationship with Native American Fatherhood and Families Association (NAFFA). In Phoenix, Kevin Maulson (a member of the Lac du Flambeau Band) has been working with Native men and women who have graduated from Mesa Community Court helping them stay on the right track of sobriety as he proclaims hope in Jesus Christ. Lutheran Indian Ministries is based in Brookfield, WI and has ministry sites in Alaska, Arizona, Washington, Montana, New Mexico, Hawaii, Manitoba, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Wisconsin The executive Director is Tim Young Eagle, who is of Pawnee descent. Previously he was senior principal gifts officer for the Lutheran High School Association of Greater Milwaukee. Tim Eagle was interviewed by the “Living Uncommon" podcast affiliated with Concordia University-Milwaukee. To listen to the podcast, visit jesus4nativ.es/tye-podcast and hear how LIM is helping reconcile Native people with God by offering a
Gospel message of true hope, healing and belonging. Lutheran Indian Ministries (LIM) envisions a day when all nations walk together in Christian fellowship. Yet less than five percent of the more than five million Native American people in North America know that they are accepted by
God and forgiven in Christ. If interested in further information, the website is www.LutheranIndianMinistries.org. Envelopes for your gifts are located on the round table in the Narthex. Your prayers, help, and support are changing things and making a difference. Thank you.

Pilgrim Lutheran School Plans to Reopen for the 2020-21 School Year
While all the details are not yet finalized, we will do all within our power, with a firm reliance on God’s help and direction, to provide “school as normal as possible.” As of this date, we have had our Task Force on School Reopening meet multiple times over the summer and craft a document entitled the COVID Opera-tional Response Plan. We anticipate this document will assist us in mitigating risk to our families while providing an environment where growth and learning are promoted. Here is a brief overview of the main points of the document:
• Drop off and Pick Up procedures will look different. Upon arrival students will go through a Health Screening Process which includes temperature scan/recording and guideline benchmarks of the CDC, WDH, & BCHD such as cough, travel, etc. Parents are asked to wait in their car before leaving until they know their child passed the screening. Dismissal will involve spacing children and adding more pick up areas.
• Classrooms may look a little different as we seek to socially distance our students as much as is reasona-bly possible within our context. Classrooms will be sanitized throughout the day. Grades 4K - 4th will be self-contained and 5th-8th will move from classroom to classroom at the current risk level for Brown County.
• Hallway procedures may look different as we seek to minimize placing students in close proximity to each other.
• Lunch procedures may look different as we minimize the size of groups gathered in one location alternat-ing classroom use and Fellowship Hall use.
• Visitors to the school will be limited and protocols will be developed for essential visitors. Enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocols are being developed and employed.
• Cloth face masks have been ordered for all members of Pilgrim Lutheran School, and may be required to be worn in some instances when social distancing is difficult. As children come and go from our building and traverse the hallways we will require them to wear a mask. While they are in the classroom they may remove their masks if they desire when in moderate risk level or lower.
• Families will be required to keep their children at home if they are sick, and if any symptoms are like Covid-19, to contact their physician for advice and keep them at home for 72 hours after symptoms abate.
• Staff and students will be required to check for symptoms on a daily basis, and to remain at or go home should they display symptoms of illness.
• Drinking fountains will not be used via the contact bar to initiate the “bubbler”, but only with the bottle sensor for filling bottles that the children bring from home. Three new fountains with bottle sensors were installed to replace the old fountain.
• With our current risk level at Moderate (orange) Off Campus activities such as Field Trips will not take place. We currently will be using the risk level map (based on cases per 100,000 people) developed by Harvard Global Health Institute found at: https://globalepidemics.org/key-metrics-for-covid-suppression/.
• With the assistance of the Brown County Health Department, COVID-19 cases will be monitored and adjustments will be made in the best interest of students and families.
As has been the case throughout the duration of this pandemic, things change quickly as we continue to learn more about COVID-19. As information changes, we work to remain flexible and adjust to new infor-mation as well as direction as it is learned. It is our intention to share email updates as we develop protocols and procedures aimed at providing our families with opportunities to “Connect, Care, and Share in Christ” in a responsible and loving manner.

T h e P r i n c i p a l ’ s E p i s t l e Living At Peace With One Another
“If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” Romans 12:18
So how is it going for you right now? We certainly have a lot of items on our collective societal plate. We are still dealing with the COVID-19 virus. We have race relationships to be concerned about. The Supreme Court has found in favor of Gay Pride activities and a landmark decision has been made relative to abortion with the case from Louisiana. While the numbers from our Coronavirus continue to be the lead story in every newscast, mandates from Wisconsin counties are beginning to take center stage. What are the schools going to do? Many larger cities from LA to Milwaukee are closing down already. Should we wear masks or not? Will we have enough hand sanitizer? Can we afford face shields and plexiglass? How are the children going to take a drink at outdated water fountains? What about the politics? With the presidential race looming in the not too distant future and the commercials from republicans and democrats making accusations about one another, how are you feeling about all that? Will we have funding for our police or will we morph into another justice system? Are all people being treated fairly? I want to ask you this question. So how is it going for you right now? Are you living peaceably with one another? The fact is God desires for us to live in peace with others. He also knows that we’ll not always be at peace with others. Conflicts occur. At times, conflicts are not easily resolved. In fact, there are occasions when conflicts can not be resolved. However God wants us to do all we can to be at peace with everyone. We who are followers of Jesus Christ know full well that when God isn’t in full control of our lives, we can act just as despicably as an unbeliever. Our salvation doesn’t automatically keep us from being mean, jealous, hateful, or angry. It’s only as we ask the Holy Spirit to work in and through us, only as we yield our will to God’s will, only as we seek to be His representatives on this earth in every relationship we have that we are going to move into behaviors that establish peace. We need to determine the value of our relationships. We need to start talking in love toward one another. We need to be transparent. We need to be open and honest with one another to move from conflict to a peaceful solution. We need to deal with one another in love, the same love that Jesus has for us. When we stand on the truth of God’s Word, we need to know that God stands with us. When we come to our Lord in prayer for the people we are dealing with, we know that He hears our prayers and provides us with all that we need. In fact, He probably has a plan worked out before we even ask Him. He will bring about spiritual growth, greater faith, and the strength to live at peace and deal with one another in love. May God bless you to that end!
Congratulations—Above and Beyond Awards Congratulations to Mike and Kelly Schumm, as well as a host of others who have moved and installed our lockers from Notre Dame in De Pere to Pilgrim. Thanks for all who have helped in the care of our church and school! We are so blessed at Pilgrim. Thanks to all of you for your prayers for our church and school! Way to go Pilgrim! You have made us proud with your work Above and Beyond! What a fabulous job you all have done! You too, are our Above and Beyond Award Winners and without you we would not be the quality church and school we are. Thank you Lord for blessing us with so many industrious and talented people!
Pilgrim School Has new Water Fountains We have been blessed with wonderful new bottle dispensing water fountains. As the children come back to school they will need to have a bottle for their personal water. We will now have a place where they do not have to touch anything but their bottles to fill them up with water. These were available at a really good price. We are thankful to the Lord for making these available to our school for our upper grade children. Thank you Lord for this blessing of new water fountains!
Pilgrim School Has One to One iPads We will be 1:1 with iPads for all children at Pilgrim from grades K-8. What does this mean? It means we will have a consistent platform for instruction. It means that we will have the ability to teach the children even if the COVID-19 virus forces us to stay at home. It means not as many heavy textbooks or as much paper to deal with. It means creative, innovative, applications for the children. It also means we will be able to coordinate our grading with our new Student Information System. Thank you Lord for this blessing of technology!
Pilgrim School Has a new Student Information System (SIS) We have come to a new opportunity for our Pilgrim Lutheran School to communicate with our families. Our new system will enable us to have a direct line of communication with our families. It is accepted by the State of Wisconsin and correlates with the state reports which are mandatory for us to submit. Attendance, Admissions, Grading, Online payments, Discipline, Nursing, and integrates with the G -Suite for Educational Integration. We will be just scratching the surface of the capabilities this system has to offer but we feel blessed to move into a new era of communication. Thank you Lord for blessing us with this new means of communication!
Welcome to Pilgrim! We welcome our 3 new teachers to Pilgrim. Diana Stockfisch will be our new Preschool Administrator and Teacher, Kayla Ziesmer will be our new Kindergarten teacher. Keri Gosa will be our new additional 1st grade teacher since we have 31 children in 1st grade we needed to split them up for consistency and successful academic instruction, Keri’s husband David is the new principal at Zion Wayside so she will primarily attend there, how ever she will be coming to Pilgrim on a regular cycle. Diana and Kayla and their families are members of Pilgrim so we will see them regularly. Thank you Lord for blessing us with these teachers!
Finally, we have so much to be thankful for! I want to thank you for your magnificent support of Pilgrim Lutheran School with your finances, positive words of encouragement, and especially your prayers! Thanks for the phenomenally positive word of mouth that you share with all you know! It is really awesome to see what the Lord is doing for our school and with our children! We are so very thankful for what the Lord continues to do for us! We pray the Lord will continue to bless us through the new school year! Thank you Lord for our school ministry at Pilgrim!
