For his first botanical garden exhibition outsideof the United States, DaleChihuly indulges his perpetual fascination withglasshouses by installingan elaborate collection ofglass at the Royal BotanicGardens, Kew. Inside grandVictorian conservatories
and amongst outdoor plant collections, these twenty-five installations come together to transform completelythe 132-hectare (some 325 acres) World Heritage Site.
Elaborate orange and yellow Asymmetrical Towers
accent the entrance to Kew’s elegant Palm House and a brilliant Sun adorns the modern Princess of WalesConservatory. Brightly colored Walla Wallas rest in an outdoor lake and graceful Herons rise from a calmwaterlily pond. Many other works nestle within planting beds to surprise visitors expecting to see purely botanical beauty.

“The Seaforms seemed tocome about by accident, asmuch of my work does—bychance. We were experimentingwith some ribbed molds. . . Byblowing the pieces into ribbedmolds, it gave them morestrength.” Dale Chihuly
Part of Dale Chihuly’s talent is making a highly complexart form appear simple and natural. Chihuly sought to strengthen glass by forming it in a ribbed mold, reinforcing the glass much as corrugation adds strengthto cardboard. The glass, now traced with radial lines, could withstand more vigorous manipulation, especially shaking and crimping, which introduced longitudinal ripples and pleats. Chihuly Seaforms
includes forty-four full-color pages. For anyone whoenjoys the visual relationship between art, science, andnature, Chihuly Seaforms is a must.

Chihuly Drawing
chronicles four decades ofDale Chihuly’s work onpaper. This dynamiccollection is a fascinatingstudy of variety. Many ofthe drawings aredrenched in thick, boldlayers. Others are moreelusive—just a hint ofform sketched with a
fistful of pencils or a confidently manipulated charcoal.Over the years his style evolved, becoming moreabstract, more elaborate, and, in some cases, muchlarger. But there are no rules; a technique that Chihulyfavored a decade before may resurface again. Theexcitement of Chihuly’s work on paper is in itsunpredictability, and that in two dimensions Chihulyis free to let his grandest schemes come to fruition.Above all, Chihuly’s work on paper revels in themonumental creativity that is essentially Chihuly.

Dale Chihuly spentmore than one year exploring newforms before he arrived at thePersian series, which is looselybased on Islamic
glass. Many consider the Persians, which are markedby color saturation, bands of color, and highly unusualforms, to be Chihuly’s most powerful series. Chihuly
Persians takes readers from Chihuly’s first Persian
experiments in small forms to the complex and sizableinstallations that transformed sections of major institutionssuch as the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Palais du Louvre,Paris, France. With the help of this book, readers willappreciate the breadth and depth of the Persian series.

“The Macchia seriesbegan with my waking upone day wanting to use all 300 of the colors in the hotshop.. . . When we unloaded theovens there was the rushof seeing something I had
never seen before. Like much of my work, the seriesinspired itself.” Dale Chihuly
Macchia means “spotted” in Italian, but ever since the Renaissance, the word has been associated with a sketchlike method of applying the initial color to adrawing or painting. Dale Chihuly took this idea to thehotshop and produced the Macchia series.
Chihuly alla Macchia presents the series, along withclose-up detailed photographs and Chihuly’s drawings,to give readers an intimate view of each of theMacchias. The dramatic nature of this series is beautifullypresented in Chihuly alla Macchia.

More than twenty yearsago, Dale Chihuly arrivedin Venice to studyglassblowing as a FulbrightFellow. Since that time, he has become known for continual invention andexperimentation in hismedium. During the1980s, Chihuly revisited
Venice and became captivated by a private Italianart deco glass collection. Back home, in a radicaldeparture from his free-form sculptures, heexplored—and interpreted—the traditional vessel.
Master Venetian glassblower Lino Tagliapietra and alarge U.S. team (up to fifteen glassblowers) took anexciting experimental approach in the hotshop andcreated some of the most exotic “vessels” everblown. Venetians offers readers full-colorphotographs of these fantastically sculpted vessels andthe drawings Chihuly made to guide the team.
