An American Tradition

In 1834, Silas Lamson opened a small factory in Shelburne Falls MA, to produce his newly invented curved scythe snath. This innovation allowed workers to cut grasses and grains while standing; making the tedious work easier and faster. At the time, this product was an agricultural revolution. In 1837, his two sons, Ebenezer and Nathanial together with partner, Abel Goodnow, became interested in capitalizing on their father’s steel production. The trio began making knives under the name Lamson and Goodnow from that same factory. Throughout the decades that followed, Lamson and Goodnow became synonymous with fine crafted knives and cutlery. During the Civil War, the company became one of the largest suppliers of bayonets as well as a cutlery manufacturer growing to where it employed over 500 people. President Ulysses S. Grant commissioned a set of fine cutlery from the company for the White House in 1869. Hand made with pearl and ivory handles engraved with American maple leaves, the knife set now resides in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC as an example of American craftsmanship.

The Lamson reputation for fine quality cutlery grew and many products lines were added over the decades. Kitchen tools, including spatulas, turners and more plus trade tools such as scrapers and putty knives became part of the company’s growing repertoire. By the 21st Century, Lamson branched out adding high quality TreeSpirit™ wooden spatulas, spoons and kitchen tools and HotSpot™ silicone to complete its range of fine kitchen accessories.

In December 2015, Lamson and Goodnow became LongCap Lamson Products LLC and relocated its manufacturing facilities to Westfield, MA. The change enables the company to meet customer demand with an even greater dedication to manufacturing fine quality cutlery, kitchen tools and accessories. Lamson Products is poised for growth as the company celebrates 180 years. Handcrafted and Made in America, Lamson forged cutlery ranks as some of the world’s finest. With a complete line of walnut handle kitchen tools, POM handle and commercial poly handle knives and accessories, Lamson Products can meet the demands of the most meticulous professional chef, the backyard cook or even grandma’s kitchen. This catalog is a snapshot of our product lines but barely tells the depth of our commitment to our customer.
