God, our Father, chose Mary to be the Mother of
Jesus, and when He asked her to do this for Him, she
said, ‘Yes!’
Learning Objective:
To know that we show our devotion to Mary by singing hymns, praying and displaying statues of
her.
Success Criteria:
All – I can identify who Mary was and what she symbolised.
Most – I can explain ways in which we can show love and devotion to Mary.
She is our mother in heaven
and she shows her love for us
by watching over us and
listening to our prayers.
Mary is known as the mother of
the church, We the people are
the church, so Mary is our
mother.
Mary welcomed the message and promise brought to her by the angel Gabriel, believing that ‘with
God nothing will be impossible’ Throughout her life and when Jesus her son died on
the cross, Mary’s faith never stopped. She never ceased to believe in God’s word.
The Hail Mary is based on the words of the Angel
Gabriel, and the words of Mary's cousin Elizabeth
when Mary went to visit her:
These words remind us that Mary was
'blessed'- that means chosen and
holy- and that the child she gave birth to
was the son of God, Who would grow
up to become the saviour of the world.
• In May we celebrate Pentecost-just after Easter; Pentecost
was the birth of the Christian church through the Holy
Spirit when the disciples went out to preach the news of
Jesus.
• May is seen as the beginning of new life and the start of
summer, which makes this a logical time for the
celebrations of Mary, who brought life into the world.
How can we show our devotion to Mary?
• Say the Rosary or say prayers to Mary
• Wearing symbols associated with Mary e.g. miraculous medals and rosary beads
• Make a May alter with a statue of Mary
• May processions
• Songs
• Many children celebrate their 1st holy communion in May where they join with Mary and Jesus at the table
of the lord.
Marian Shrines and Grottos
Grottos also receive particular attention during this special
month and, again, are decorated with flowers. Pilgrims
sometimes undertake a journey to reach a particular
shrine, praying the rosary along the way.
