Victory Over Evil ForcesVictory Over Evil Forces
Victory Over Forces of EvilKey Text
Romans 8:37 NKJV
“YET in all these things we are more than conquerors through
Him who loved us.”
Victory Over Forces of EvilInitial Words {231}
THE narrative of the great controversy needs to form the
background for our understanding of the world and our place within
it.In the midst of this conflict,
Christianity does not abandon its adherents to the mercy of the
opposing forces. In Christ we have the promise of victory.
Victory Over Forces of EvilQuick Look
1. Stage Set for Victory (Ephesians 1:20-22)2. Hope of Victory (Romans 8:26-28)3. Examples of Victory (Luke 9 and 10)
Victory Over Forces of Evil1. Stage Set for Victory
Ephesians 1:20-22 NKJV“HE raised Him from the dead and
seated Him at His right hand in heavenly places, far above all
principality and power and might and dominion and every name…,And He put all things under His
feet….”
1. Stage Set for VictoryDeath and Resurrection {232}
CHRIST, through His death on the cross and His resurrection from the
grave, gained victory over all sorts of evil and antigodly “powers.”
The fact that the “powers” have been brought under subjection sets
the stage for the victory of the Christian.
1. Stage Set for VictoryDeath and Resurrection {232}
Paul is praying that a new and deep illumination will accompany the
Christian. Their lives will be filled with Christian hope.
They will know their privileges as God’s heirs; know by experience the power of God in their lives, a power
that is of the same magnitude as that which raised Jesus from the dead.
Victory Over Forces of Evil2. Hope of Victory
Romans 8:26-28 NKJV
“LIKEWISE the Spirit also helps in our weakness. … The Spirit Himself
makes intersession for us with groanings….
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love
God…. ”
2. Hope of VictoryTrusting in Difficulties {233}
TWO solid reasons for the Christian to be confident in the Lord.
First, the Spirit helps us in our trials and “groanings.”
Second, according to God’s eternal purpose, all things, including trials,
contribute to the Christian’s ultimate welfare
2. Hope of VictoryTrusting in Difficulties {233}
Romans 8:35–39 gives an array of entities over which the Christian can
be victorious.Notice that “principalities and
powers” are included in the list.The sheer inclusiveness of Paul’s list
points out that there is nothing in the universe over which the Christian cannot be victorious, thanks to Jesus.
2. Hope of VictoryChristians Versus the Devil {234}
“Resist the devil” (James 4:7).The Greek anthistemi, “resist” means “taking a stand against something.”It is an attitude the Christian takes
that causes the devil to flee.That attitude has to be one of
complete surrender to Jesus, who alone has the power to cause the
devil to flee from us.
2. Hope of VictoryChristians Versus the Devil {234}
Peter uses the word anthistemi, but he adds the modifier stereoi (“hard” or “firm”). The devil may flee from those who present a solid, rock-like
front against his attacks.Peter knows that in spite of a strong
stand, suffering may endure for a while yet; but God Himself will
strengthen, and settle the Christian.
Victory Over Forces of Evil3. Examples of Victory
Luke 9 and 10 NKJV
“THEN He called His twelve disciples…and gave them power and
authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.
After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and
sent them two by two….”
3. Examples of VictoryThe 12 and 70 Disciples {235}
AS Jesus sent the Twelve out to proclaim the gospel of the coming
of God’s kingdom, He deemed it important to give them power over
demons and unclean spirits.This is not surprising, because proper preaching of the gospel
necessarily entails the unmasking of such powers.
3. Examples of VictoryThe 12 and 70 Disciples {235}
The manifestation of the “powers” was to be expected as the gospel would be proclaimed; hence, the
need to give the Twelve power over them.
As Christians who have been called to proclaim the gospel to the world, we have, through Christ, the power
to do it.
3. Examples of VictoryBook of Acts {236}
Acts 5:12-16 The apostles’ mighty miracles.
Acts 3:1-11 Peter heals the lame man.
Acts 16:16-18 A spirit of divination is cast out.
The great controversy though settled finally at the cross, is to rage until the end of time.
Victory Over Forces of EvilFinal Words {237}
“WE cannot save ourselves from the tempter’s power…but ‘the name of
the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is
safe.’ Prov. 18:10.Satan trembles and flees before the
weakest soul who finds refuge in that mighty name” (The Desire of
Ages 131).
