There is some confusion about the difference

between an I-20 and an F1 visa. The I-20 and the F1

visa are two entirely different documents.

• The I-20 – (“Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status -- For Academic and

Language Students”) is the three page document you received from Baylor. It

attests you are qualified to study in the US and allows you to apply for the F1 visa.

Item #5 is especially important: It contains your program completion (graduation)

date. If you cannot complete your program (graduate) by the date indicated in Item

#5, you must contact the ISSS Office ([email protected]) at least 30 days

prior to that date, to request an extension of your I-20.

– Before traveling out of the US, please read page 3 and bring your I-20 to the ISSS

Office for the DSO signature.

– An expired I-20 means you are out of status and jeopardizes your academics, your

presence in the US, and all other benefits (such as graduate assistantship or

campus employment).

Please do not let your I-20 expire!

• The F-1 Visa – The F-1 visa is to request entry into the US. It is a page in your passport

issued by the US embassy or consulate in your home country. The purpose of

the F-1 visa is study in an academic program in the US, and no other purpose

or activity. You may remain the US with an expired F-1 visa as long as you are

maintaining valid student status. You must apply for a new F-1 visa only if you

travel abroad and your F-1 visa has expired, so that you can return to the U.S.

Go to http://www.ice.gov/sevis/travel/faq_f3.htm for more information about

the F-1 visa.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: New International Students:

– Only students who have on-campus employment are eligible for a Social Security number/card. This applies specifically to graduate students with assistantships. The local Social Security Office is located at 1700 Lake Air Drive.

– The requirements to apply for the SS card: 1. Your I-20, your passport, your I-94 and your F1 visa.

You must take the originals/actual documents. They will not accept photocopies.

2. Two letters: One from the ISSS Office, and one from your employment supervisor (or assistantship supervisor), which must be in the Social Security Office’s specific format. If your supervisor does not have template of the letter, he/she can contact the ISSS Office ([email protected]) to request it. The ISSS office will notify new international graduate students when our letter is ready for you to pick up.

3. We strongly advise to not go to the SS office until five days after your ISSS check-in, to ensure sufficient time for processing. 4. Additional information is available at www.ssa.gov
