Oct.21,2019 Now, the Ginko berries have all fallen from the trees and it’s approaching the most beautiful season of the year in front of Building No.1 (by Kohei Yoda, Geotech lab M1)
JR Freight Railway Company provides cargo transportation all
over Japan. We started our visit with a brief company overview in
the company office and then moved to the cargo facility where
we had a first hand experience of the cargo handling process.
Then we proceeded to the training centre, which is one of the
most advanced training facilities in Japan. With the railway track
point and crossing model, the level crossing model and the
electric locomotive training facility, the newly recruited engineers
can acquire a holistic and in-depth knowledge of the working
operations of a cargo handling company.

After the insightful site visit, we headed for lunch at
the company cafeteria. We had a very delicious
Japanese full course meal along with green tea. I had
a wonderful time talking with my host family, Motoi
Nakayama san, along with the employees of JR Cargo
about Japanese work culture.

It was a great experience for me to visit Musashino
Namacon and learn about the process of producing and
transporting huge quantities of good quality concrete to
support the infrastructure needs in Japan. The entire
process from material acquisition to logistics are performed
in a very systematic and professional manner ensuring the
delivery of high quality concrete.

The delicious lunch
provided me a unique
opportunity to directly
and informally interact
with Mr. Funayama and
learn about the
intricacies and challenges
involved in concrete
production.

Fresh Concrete Factory
I was very impressed by the fact that the factory
is located in a residential area and is completely
soundproof. Belt conveyers operate inside tubes
to avert the spread of dust. The factory was built
using concrete rather than thin metal sheets to
prevent inconvenience to nearby residents due to
loud noise.

The operations are performed in a very clean
and safe manner. They always clean up the
factory and all machines are controlled by a
computer in the remote office. This factory is
operated by around only 20 staff. Amazing!!
They also have a well equipped experimental room to
verify the quality of concrete. Most staff members
started to work after graduating from high-school; they
are trained here in various aspects involved in the
production of good quality fresh concrete over the years.
Before being employed in University of Miyazaki for 7 years,
I had been working in Gunma University for the same
duration. At that time, I communicated with my colleagues,
faculty members, all parties of joint research and relevant
staff mainly in Japanese. Better understanding of local
culture makes me know the way to respect and get on well
with each other.
How to develop my language skills?
How to settle down in Japanese society?
When I was a student, I took actively part in various events
after study, such as dinner party, seminar trip, etc., which
organized by the Lab. No matter who needed assistance
when conducting the experiment, the senior or the junior,
there’s no hesitation for me to help them out. In return for
this, I was also offered a great help as I was in need.
Besides, the days I spent with my colleagues enable me to
fit into the life of school so quickly that the study and
research can be carried out smoothly. Meanwhile, I found
that my Japanese has been significantly improved. More
than that, I understood better about Japanese cultural
traditions. The extraordinarily experience changed my life. It
allowed me to make more friends, enlarge my social contact
and enrich my knowledge, which play an important role in
carrying out project successfully.
There goes an old saying that never too old to learn. Even if
I started to work, I didn't stop learning. Most of my time
would be devoted to making progress in my field. I will work
harder to strive for creating a great academic environment
and building a harmonious interpersonal relationship.

Since children are still young, I try my best to balance
well between family and work. So the time I dedicated
to my profession is as much as with my family. Under
that circumstances, it‘s too luxurious to enjoy what I like
to do alone. In recent years, as the children have been
growing up, the number of family driving trip is
increasing. My family and I obtain more and more
opportunities to get close to the natural world and have
some insight into the history and culture of Japan. In
addition, I use my weekend for activating my laboratory
by BBQ party or seminar trips with my lab pupils.
My relaxing time!
