As we grow up, our brains grow with us.• Most of this happens while you are a baby up until the age of 5 (purple part of
brain is 10% that will still grow)• Now, your brains are almost/or close to the size of mine! (teacher’s)• Brains grow as long as a regular pencil (demonstrate with pencil) and can weigh as
much as a pineapple!

The brain is separated into 4 sections called “lobes.” They are all in charge of doing different things.
1. The pink part of the brain in the picture is in charge of our thinking and planning. Q: Can someone tell me a fun activity they plan on doing this weekend?
2. The blue part of the brain in the picture is in charge of what we taste when we eat something.
Q: Can someone tell me their favourite food?
3. The yellow part of the brain in the picture is in charge of what you see through our eyes.
Q: Can someone tell me their favourite colour?
4. The green part of the brain in the picture is in charge of sound and what we hear through our ears.
Q: Does anyone have a favourite song they want to share?

When we use our imagination and get creative, we are exercising our brains and keeping them healthy!
Now that you know a little bit more about the brain, it’s your turn to use your creativity and make a brain of your own!

• The brain is located in our heads and it is in charge of all of our senses:o Vision (what we see out of our eyes)o Hearing (what we hear out of our ears)o Smell (what we smell out of our nose)o Taste (what we taste in our mouth)

1. The brain is a small part of the body, but it can do more jobs than the most powerful computer ever made.
2. If you look at the illustration above, you are able to see how scientists describe the brain as having different lobes and the different functions these lobes can perform. To be able to do each task, the various parts of the brain need to work together.
• Q1: Our brains help us see and recognize colour. Can someone tell me what lobe is responsible for this?
• A1: Occipital lobe• Q2: Our brains decide if we will be happy, sad, nice, or well behaved. Can someone tell me
what lobe is responsible for this?• A2: Frontal lobe
• Q3: Final question - Our brains help us remember how to count and how to recognize streets on our way home. Can someone tell me what lobe is responsible for this?
• A3: Temporal lobe3. Our brain does all of these things for us and much more. It sounds easy, but it is not. Our brains are
working very hard all of the time.

Stare at these squares for a few seconds. Do you see dots appear at the corners of the squares? Look away and look back. Are the dots still there?
*Discuss answers within class*
A: If you look at all the squares together as one, you will see the dots. However, if you look at just one individual square and the white lines surrounding that particular square, the dots do not appear.

Q: Does anyone remember what part of our brain was being used while looking at those images?
A: This is your frontal lobe, which helps with decision-making. Your brain was sending signals to tell you what you were seeing in each image. All of this can happen in under one second!

Before we decorate our brains, here are some ways we can make sure we are keeping our brains healthy, since we must take care of it just like any other body part!

• Our brains contain billions of nerve cells arranged in patterns that coordinate thought, emotion, behavior, movement and sensation.
• The brain is a complicated highway system of nerves that connect our brains to the rest of our body, so communication can occur in split seconds.
• Eg. Think about how fast you pull your hand back from a hot stove. While all the parts of your brain work together, each part is responsible for a specific function — controlling everything from our heart rate to our mood.

Our brain's hemispheres are divided into four lobes.
1. The frontal lobes control thinking, planning, organizing, problem solving, short-term memory and movement.
2. The parietal lobes interpret sensory information, such as taste, temperature and touch.
3. The occipital lobes process images from your eyes and link that information with images stored in memory.
4. The temporal lobes process information from your senses of smell, taste and sound. They also play a role in memory storage.

Do you remember meeting a good friend for the first time?
When you saw them again the next time, how did were you able to remember their face and name?
This involves a type of memory.

Can everyone please take out a pencil and piece of paper?
I am going to show you a photo collage for 1 minute. When that 1 minute is up, write down as many of the items/things that you see in the collage. This will be a test of your short-term memory.
38
*Stay on slide for one-minute”

Now write down as many of the items in your short-term memory as you can.
*One-minute later”
Let’s now add up all the images we wrote down and compare how many we got!

Q: Does anyone remember what part of our brain is responsible for memory?
A: Frontal lobe and temporal lobe – both of these areas interact to help you maintain a short-term memory and retrieve the long-term memory.
