    Useful Hints For PowerMaxExpress Users

    Stopping an alarm: When the alarm sounds -press the DISARM ( ) button on your key-ringtransmitter or press on the keypad and thenenter your access code ( 1 1 1 1 by default).Stopping trouble beeps: When trouble occurs inthe system, the TROUBLE indicator on the front panelwill light, and a sequence of 3 beeps will sound onceper minute. If you do not wish to eliminate the troubleimmediately and the beeps are bothersome, press theDISARM ( ) button on your key-ring transmitter, orpress on the keypad and then enter youraccess code ( 1 1 1 1 by default). This will silence thebuzzer for 4 hours, after which the trouble beeps willresume sounding. Be advised, however, that in anycase the trouble beeps are silenced during nighthours.Perimeter and interior zones versus 24-hourzones: Most of the protection sensors in your systemare linked to perimeter and interior zones. Thesezones trigger alarms while the system is in the armed state and do not trigger alarms while the system is inthe disarmed state. Other sensors are linked to 24-hour zones which trigger alarms irrespective ofarming/disarming.Arming while perimeter zones are notsecured (doors and/or windows are open): Your display will read NOT READY if a protecteddoor or window is open. You can find out which zoneis not ready by clicking the OKI button. You caneliminate the problem by closing the door/window orby performing "Forced arming" (zone deactivation) ifthis option was enabled by the system installer. Incase you intentionally choose to bypass a zone, leavethe door or window open and arm the systemBypassed zones will not be protected during onearming period.

    Gaining access to 24-hour zones: If you wishto access a sensor defined as a 24-hour zone withoutcausing an alarm: Click - the display will read:NORMAL

    MODE / WALK TEST . Click again - the display will read:USER

    SETTINGS . Click OKI - the display will read:ENTER

    CODE ___. Key your secret 4-digit - the buzzer willplay the happy Tune (- - - ).You have 4 minutes during which the 24-hour sensorcan be opened and accessed. When the 4 minutesare up, the system will automatically revert to thenormal mode.Canceling accidental alarms: Upon alarm, theinternal sounder is activated first for a limited period of

    time (set by the installer). Then the external sirenstarts and the event is reported to the centralmonitoring station. If you accidentally cause an alarm,you may simply disarm the system before the externalsiren starts - the alarm will not be reported.If you cause an alarm accidentally and the externalsiren has already started - you can still disarm thesystem within a time limit set by the installer (1 to 15minutes, as desired). If you manage to disarm on time,a CANCEL ALARM message will be automaticallysent to the central monitoring station.Failing to exit before the exit delay expires: If you exit the protected site after the exit delay expires(the exit delay beeps stop), the system will interpretthis as if you just entered. The entry delay countdownwill begin and the entry delay beeps will sound. Toprevent an alarm, you must disarm the system beforethe entry delay expires.Unauthorized entry took place while youwere away: If you hear alarm sirens when you areabout to re-enter the premises, and lights whichshould be off are on - an intruder may still be inside oranother event may have occurred. Do not confront the

    intruder - remain outside and call the emergencyservices.

    1. Introduction

    Overview

    The PowerMaxExpress is a wireless alarm controlsystem that provides protection against burglary, fireand tampering. In addition, it can be used to monitorthe activity of disabled or elderly people left at home.Status information is presented visually.The PowerMaxExpress is governed by a controlpanel (Fig. 1) designed to collect data from varioussensors that are strategically located within andalong the perimeter of the protected site (Figure 2).In the disarmed state , the system provides youwith visual status information, and initiates an alarmif smoke is detected or upon disturbance in a 24-hour zone (a zone which is active 24-hours a day).In the armed state , the system will initiate an alarm

    upon detection of disturbance in any one of thearmed zones.

    You will need a 4-digit security code to master thesystem (code 0000 is not allowed), and you canauthorize 7 other persons to use the system byproviding them with their own security codes.Moreover, you can obtain up to 8 multi-function

    key-ring transmitters that will allow you and otherusers to easily control major functions.If the user has changed the state of the system froma high security mode to a lower security mode i.e.from ARM to DISARM, or from ARM to HOME, hewill be prompted to enter the user code thusbypassing the QUICK ARM option.The system identifies a wide range of events -alarms, attempts to tamper with sensors and severaltypes of trouble. Events are automatically reportedvia PSTN or optional GSM and Broadband to centralmonitoring stations (in digital form) and to privatetelephones (in tones and/or SMS messages). Theperson receiving such a message is expected toinvestigate the event and act accordingly.

    IMPORTANT! All you need to know to secure your premises can be found in Chapter 2 of this manual.If you are not familiar with some of the terms usedhere, refer to Appendix B at the end of this guide.Note: This system must be checked by a qualifiedtechnician at least once every three (3) years.

    System Features

    Your PowerMaxExpress offers a large number ofunique features: Master / User Settings:

    29 zones: Each protected zone is identified bynumber and by name.

    Multiple arming modes: AWAY, HOME, AWAY-INSTANT, HOME-INSTANT, LATCHKEY andBYPASS.

    Liquid crystal display (LCD): Plain-languagestatus information and prompts are displayed onthe front panel in large, clear letters.

    Real-time clock: The present time is visible on thedisplay. This feature is also used for the log file byproviding the date and time of each event

    Various reporting destinations: Events arereported automatically to central monitoringstations, private telephones of your choice, to apager and even by SMS if GSM is installed.

    Selective reporting: Your installer can determinewhat type of event will be reported to whichdestination.

    Latchkey mode: An automatic Latchkeymessage is sent to chosen telephones if thesystem is disarmed by a latchkey user (a juniorfamily member, for instance).

    Access from remote telephones: You may

    access the PowerMaxExpress from a remotetelephone and Arm/Disarm it or receive systemstatus information.

    Numerical keys serve as function keys: In thedisarmed state, numerical keys are used to controlvarious system functions. A simple icon on eachkey identifies the task of that key.

    PGM remote control: Gate control mechanisms,courtesy lights and various other devices can beswitched on and off via a special PGM(programmable) output. Your installer willdetermine the control means, in accordance withyour needs.

    Data retrieval: You can obtain status information,trouble information and review memorized alarmevents visually.

    Looking after elderly, physically handicappedand infirm individuals: The system can beprogrammed to monitor activity within theprotected area and send out an alert message ifthe person under surveillance remains still for apredefined period of time (as set by your installer).

    Distress calls: Miniature pushbutton transmitters

    dealt out to specific individuals may be used forsending emergency calls for help.

    Disarming under duress: If a user is forcibly

    compelled to disarm the system, he can use aspecial code that disarms the system apparentlyas usual, but sends a silent alarm to the centralstation (see chapter 2).

    System supervision: All wireless peripheralswithin the protected site send periodic supervisionmessages. If such a message is overdue, thePowerMaxExpress displays an inactivity troublemessage. Your installer can disable this feature ifso desired.

    Battery supervision: You do not have to worryabout dead batteries. The PowerMaxExpress

    displays a Low Battery message whenever abattery in a wireless sensor is found to be near theend of its useful life. When the battery voltage inthe wireless siren is low, a low battery message issent to the alarm system. After the low voltagemessage delivery, at least 2 siren alarms arepossible before the siren is totally inactive.

    A PANIC alarm can be initiated: through the MCT-234 keyfob, by pressing AWAY and HOME togetherfor 2 sec.; through the MCT-237 keyfob, by pressingthe AUX1 and AUX2 buttons for 2 sec.; and throughthe MKP-150/151 keypad by pressing the # and *buttons for 2 sec. Pressing AWAY twice within 2seconds initiates Latchkey arming, if enabled by theinstaller.

    The devices can be used for:A. Arming the system in the INSTANT mode :

    Pressing the AUX button immediately afterarming, during exit delay, causes the system tobe armed without an entry delay. This meansthat entering the protected premises via anyzone will trigger an immediate alarm. You andother holders of keyfob transmitters will have noproblem, because you can disarm the systembefore entering by pressing the DISARM ( )button on your transmitter before entry.

    B. Skip exit delay: Pressing the AUX button willimmediately cause the system to arm instant.

    Disarming by a keyfob whose battery voltage islow (if enabled by the installer)If you try to disarm the system with a keyfob whosebattery voltage is low, a protest beep will be heard for15 seconds. During this period you should press againthe disarm button of the keyfob or control panel (for the

    control panel, user code is required) to disarm thesystem. If you perform this action during the 15 secondsperiod, the Low Bat acknowledge message will bestored in the event log.

    If the disarm button is not pressed again during the15 seconds period, perform either of the followingactions when you want to rearm the system: A. Press AWAY twice to arm the system, otherwise the

    system will not be armed and an acknowledgement(from the user that he knows about the Low Bat) willnot be stored in the event log.

    B. Press AWAY and then press disarm button, toacknowledge, otherwise the acknowledgementwill not be stored in the event log.

    The sounds you will hear while using the control panelare:

    Single beep, heard whenever a key ispressedDouble beep, indicates automatic returnto the normal operating mode (bytimeout).

    Three beeps, indicates a trouble event

    Happy Tune (- - - ), indicatessuccessful completion of an operation. Sad Tune (), indicates a wrongmove or rejection

    Screen Saver Option

    The purpose of the Screen Saver option (if enabled by

    the installer) is that when no key is pressed duringmore than 30 seconds, the display reads PowerMaxand the LEDs do not light (to prevent an intruder toknow the system status). The normal display returnsafter pressing the button followed by enteringuser code (Refresh by Code ) or after pressing anykey (Refresh by Key ), as selected by the installer.If Refresh by Key was selected, the first pressing ofany key (except Fire and Emergency) causes normaldisplay return and the second press performs the keyfunction. Regarding the Fire and Emergency keys,the first key press causes normal display return andalso performs the Fire/Emergency function.

    Before arming, make sure that READY is displayed.This means that all zones are secured and you mayarm the system any way you choose.When the system is not ready for arming (at leastone zone is open) the display is NOT READY TRBL(trouble), NOT READY MEM (memory), NOTREADY MSG (message) or NOT READY BYPASS.If the system is not ready for arming, clickto review the numbers and names of all open zonesone by one.It is highly recommended to fix the open zone(s), thusrestoring the system to the state of ready to arm. If youdo not know how to do this, consult your installer.IMPORTANT! All arming procedures below arebased on the assumption that quick arming has beenenabled by the installer. If quick arming is disabled,the PowerMaxExpress will prompt you to enter yoursecurity code before arming.

    Arming AWAY

    If the system is READY , proceed as shown:

    Forced Arming AWAY

    Forced arming allows you to arm the system eventhough one zone or several zones are disturbed, andthe NOT READY message is displayed. Automatic forced arming only works if the installerallowed this option while programming your system.Disturbed zones will be bypassed - they will not bearmed. The protected site will not have maximumprotection .Note: When forced arming is carried out, the buzzerprotests by emitting a continuous tone during the exitdelay until the last 10 seconds of the delay. You cansilence this signal by pressing the arming button again.When NOT READY is displayed, Forced armingAWAY is performed as follows:

    Arming in the Latchkey Mode

    This mode is useful for a parent at work who wantsto be sure that his children have returned fromschool and have disarmed the system. Arming in thelatchkey mode means that a special latchkeymessage will be sent out when the system is

    disarmed by a latchkey user.Latchkey users are holders of user codes 5 through 8 orusers of Keyfob transmitters 5 through 8. The latchkeymessage is considered an alert and not an alarm, andis therefore sent to the private telephones programmedby the user as targets for alert messages.Latchkey arming is possible only when you armAWAY. To arm in the Latchkey mode, proceed asfollows with the appropriate Keyfob:

    Siren Behavior

    The total siren time does not exceed the maximumtime as configured by the installer.Continuously ON when initiated by a burglar zoneor a 24-hour zone, and when a user initiates a panicalarm.

    When initiated by a fire zone (smoke is detected) ON -ON - ON - pause - ON - ON - ON - pause - ........and so on.If there is nobody around to disarm the system uponalarm, the siren will sound for the time duration setby the installer - then will stop. The strobe light willkeep flashing until the system is disarmed.When the system is disarmed, the message "for AWAY" is displayed. Now you can press the

    OKI button to immediately arm the control panel,or wait for 3 second for system automatic AWAYarming (the message "Please exit now" will bedisplayed).Instead of pressing the OKI button (see above),you can press the button once / twice (themessage " for HOME" / " for disarm" isdisplayed, accordingly) and then press the press

    OKI button for HOME arming / disarming.

    Chime ON/OFF

    You can disable / enable the chime zones byalternate clicking of the key, as shown below:

The trouble types are as follows:SENSOR TROUBLES Inactivity - No radio signals have been received

    wireless commander is near the end of its useful life. "Clean me" - The fire detector must be cleaned. Gas trouble - Gas detector failure. Siren AC failure - There is no power to the siren.     system is working on backup battery power. System Jammed - A radio-frequency signal is

    CPU low battery - The backup battery withinthe control panel is weak and must be replaced(see Chapter 7 - Replacing Backup Battery).

    CPU tamper - The control panel is beingtampered with.

    telephone lineIMPORTANT! If the trouble beeps bother you, disarmthe system again (even though it is already disarmed).This will cancel the trouble beeps for 4 hours.

    Correcting Trouble SituationsThe trouble indications (illuminated TROUBLEindicator and flashing TRBL message) are clearedonce you eliminate the cause for trouble. If you donot know how to cope with a trouble situation,report it to your installer and seek his advice.INACTIVITY : Once an inactive wireless devicerenews its periodical transmissions, the inactivitytrouble no longer exists and will no longer beindicated by the control panel.LOW BATTERY : Upon replacing the battery in a

    wireless sensor in a keyfob or in a wirelesscommander that reported a low battery, the nexttransmission made by the relevant sensor will includea battery restored message, and low battery will nolonger be indicated by the control panel.SYSTEM TROUBLE : Correction of any one of thesystem troubles is automatically sensed by the controlpanel, and the trouble indication is cleared accordingly.

    4. Special Functions

    Looking after People Left at Home An important characteristic of the PowerMaxExpressis its ability to function in a mode contrary to theusual behavior of an alarm system. When the systemis in the disarmed state (or even when armedHOME with perimeter protection only), it can keeptrack of in-house activity and will reportlack ofmotion in interior zones if there is no detection ofmotion within predetermined time limits.To use this characteristic, you must ask your installerto program a specific time limit beyond which lack ofmotion will be reported as a not active alert.To make things clear, let us assume that an elderly, sickor handicapped person is left unattended in a protectedsite. This person, disabled or sick as he may be, will notstay entirely still for hours. It is only natural that evenwhile being asleep he will turn over in his bed from timeto time. He might also wander into the kitchen to eat ordrink, or to the bathroom for other necessities. Upondoing so, the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen motiondetectors will detect his movement.If, for example, the lack of motion time limit is set byyour installer to 6 hours, a virtual 6-hour clock willcarry out a 6-hour countdown.If motion is detected within the 6-hour time frame, thecountdown will restart from the beginning (the virtual6-hour clock will be reset) and no alert message willbe sent out.If no motion is detected within the 6-hour time frame inany interior zone, the control panel will send a not-active alert message to the central monitoring stationor to private telephones designated by the installer.IMPORTANT! In addition, you may provide the personconfined to interiors with a single-button transmitter fordistress situations, see next paragraph.

    Emergency Calls for HelpSuppose the disabled person discussed above hasan accident such as falling in the bathtub withoutbeing able to get up. It might take hours before theNo Active alert is sent out, but he (or she) must beassisted much sooner.Even though the odds for such an accident are nothigh, it is advisable to provide the disabled personwith a miniature, single-button pendant-type orwristwatch-type transmitter. Pressing the button onthis transmitter will cause the PowerMaxExpress to

    send an emergency call to the central monitoringstation or to private telephones designated by theinstaller.

    To make this possible, ask your installer to defineone of the 28 zones of the PowerMaxExpress as an

    Conducting a Walk-Test

    The walk-test is an indispensable operation by whichyou verify that all detectors function properly, withoutdisturbing the neighbors with loud sirens. The testmust be performed at least once a week , andshould include all detectors in all zones.Before performing walk-test, all the detectors mustbe in normal state. Normal state is achieved when nomotion is made for at least 2 minutes.Note: During the test period, 24-hour zones will not

    cause an alarm if violated, but a fire zone willfunction normally. A typical test will take place as follows:

    5. User SettingsWhat are the Settings You Need?The installer provides you with a ready-to-use alarmsystem, but a few settings and adjustments will stillbe needed.

    Note: Although the user settings are yourresponsibility, you may request your installer to perform them for you (except for the user codes whichyou would like to keep secret).The user settings include (if enabled by the installer): Bypassing zones - determining which zones

    will be bypassed (disabled) during the presentdisarm period and the next armed period.

    Reviewing the bypass list - "show bypass" -displaying the numbers and names of bypassedzone one by one.

    Recalling the last bypassing scheme - "recall

    bypass" - re-using the previous bypassingscheme, which becomes suspended afterdisarming but is still saved in thePowerMaxExpress memory.

    Private report* - determining the event groupsto be reported to private telephone subscribers.Determining the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4 th telephonenumbers to which the system will report eventmessages that were defined by the systeminstaller. Determining the number of times thecalled party's private telephone number isdialed. Determining whether to use a single

    acknowledge signal, or, an acknowledge signalfrom each telephone before the current event isconsidered reported. Determining the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th SMS telephone numbers to which pre-selected event types will be reported.

    Setting user codes* - programming a securitycode for yourself and additional 7 codes forother system users. Codes 5 through 8 areLatchkey user codes (see Chapter 2 - Armingin the Latchkey Mode for additional details).

    Enrolling keyfob transmitters* - teaching thePowerMaxExpress system to recognize the ID

    code of each keyfob transmitter (multi-button,CodeSecure type, wireless transmitter), sothat the PowerMaxExpress can respond tocommands transmitted by them.

    Auto arm option* - enabling or disablingautomatic arming (at a predefined time).

    Setting auto arm time* - selecting automaticarming time.

    Using squawk option* - enabling/disablingLOW/MID/HI squawk (short siren sound) uponarming and disarming by keyfob. All the optionsare applicable for wireless siren. For wired siren,

    Bypassing Zones

    A. General GuidanceYou can program the PowerMaxExpress to exclude(bypass) selected zones, regardless of whetherthese zones are "functional" (undisturbed) or "open"(disturbed). Bypassing permits free movement of

    people within certain zones although the system isarmed. It is also used to temporarily remove fromservice faulty zones that require repair work. Fire andtemperature zones can not be bypassed.Remember zone bypassing compromises security!Note: Zones will be bypassed throughout onedisarm-arm period only. Disarming the system afterarming will suspend the entire bypassing scheme.B. Bypassing ProcedureHaving entered your user code successfully (see above- Entering the User Settings Menu), the display will read:

Your control panel must recognize theunique identification code (ID) of each such keyfob torespond to commands transmitted by them.Before anything else, gather up all keyfob units youintend to enroll, and make sure they all havebatteries installed.     6. Reading The Event Log

    Event Log Description

    All events are memorized in an event log thatcontains up to 100 entries. You can access this log,review the events one by one and draw functionalconclusions.If the event log fills up completely it continues toaccept new events at the expense of old events - theoldest event is deleted upon registration of each newevent.The date and time of occurrence are memorized foreach event. When reading the event log, events areshown in chronological order - from the newest to theoldest.

    Because of the limited display space, the eventdescription is shown first, then the date and time.The two displays are shown alternately severaltimes, until you click OKI to move on to an olderevent, or until the no action 4-minute timeoutrestores the system to the normal operating mode. Access to the event log is provided by clicking theasterisk ( ) key and then keying your master usercode.Should you wish to get an overall view of usingthe log, refer to Figure 9. The flow chart mayeven serve as your only guide to using the eventlog, instead of going through the written step-by-step procedure.

    7. Maintenance

    Replacing the Backup BatteryThe PowerMaster-10 uses regular electrical supply,

    but incorporates rechargeable backup 4.8V batterypack to ensure its proper operation during a powerfailure (see sticker on battery cover). After powerfailure the battery is recharged to its full capacity.Upon receiving CPU LOW BATTERY troublemessage on your LCD display when there is nopower failure or immediately following a powerfailure, this indicates a possible fault in the batterythat may require immediate battery replacement. Youshould contact your installer to perform this service.

    Replacing Wireless Devices BatteriesThe wireless devices supplied with your system arepowered by batteries that last several years, innormal use.However, if and when a battery becomes weak, thedevice itself sends a low battery message to thecontrol panel, and a low battery trouble message isdisplayed together with the zone information (seeChapter 3 - Reviewing Trouble Information).The respective manuals of these sensors or devicesshould be consulted for proper battery replacementguidelines to be performed by the installer.

    Periodic Testing

    The components of your security system aredesigned to be maintenance-free as much aspossible. Nevertheless, it is mandatory to perform awalk-test at least once a week and after an alarmevent to verify that all system detectors functionproperly. Proceed as described in Chapter 4 -Conducting a Walk-Test, and if there is any problem,notify your installer at once.

    Cleaning the Control Panel

    The control panel may occasionally get stained iftouched with greasy fingers, and may accumulatedust after a long period of use. Clean it only with asoft cloth or sponge moistened lightly with a mixtureof water and mild detergent, and then wipe it dry.

    The use of abrasives of any kind is strictlyforbidden. Also never use solvents such askerosene, acetone or thinner. These will certainlyruin the external finish and damage thetransparency of the top window.

    8. Performance Limits

    Although the alarm control system you purchased ishighly reliable, it does not guarantee protection fromburglary and fire hazards. Even the most advancedsystems can be defeated or might occasionally fail towarn. Some of the reasons for this are:Sloppy maintenance: If the system is used over along period of time without testing, a key elementsuch as a detector or a siren might go wrong withoutany visible or audible signs of failure. If a low batterywarning is neglected, there will be no backup powerto keep the system operational during a poweroutage.Power failures: In case of prolonged absence fromthe protected site, the mains supply may suddenlyfail (an earth leakage protection relay may trip,disconnecting the mains supply). After such anevent, the alarm system will draw power from thebackup battery, until all reserve power is exhausted,leaving the premises without protection.Telephone line trouble: Telephone lines may bedisconnected or short circuited. With the telephoneline "down", your alarm system will not be able toreport events to the central station.

    Sirens do not always wake up sound sleepers: Sirens and bells installed outside or far frombedrooms are not likely to awaken people who aresound asleep behind closed doors inside theprotected area or in adjacent buildings.The system is sometimes defeated: With sufficienttechnical know-how, intruders may find a way todefeat various types of sensor or disconnect warningdevices. Intruders may also take advantage ofunprotected openings and skylights, or even enterforcibly at unpredictable spots.Smoke detectors have their limits: In many cases,smoke detectors fail to warn on time because the firestarted at a different level of the house, or too faraway from the detector.All this gives sufficient proof that even with agood alarm system installed, there is still needfor life and property insurance. In addition, usersshould test their alarm systems at regularintervals, to make sure that malfunctions aredetected before a true alarm event occurs.

    APPENDIX A. GLOSSARY

    This list of terms is arranged in alphabetical order. Any term indicated by cursive (italic) letters withinthe explanatory text can be looked up separately.

    Abort Period: When an alarm is initiated, theinternal sounder is activated first for a limited periodof time which is the abort period set by the installer. Ifyou cause an alarm accidentally, you can disarm thesystem within the abort period before the real sirensstart and before the alarm is reported to the remoteresponders.

    Alarm: There are 2 kinds of alarm:Loud alarm - both internal and external sirens blareout constantly and the control panel reports the eventby telephone.Silent alarm - the sirens remain silent, but the controlpanel reports the event by telephone. A state of alarm is caused by: Motion detected by amotion detector Change of state detected by a magnetic contact

    detector - a closed window or door is opened Detection of smoke by asmoke detector Tampering with any one of the detectors Pressing the two emergency buttons

    simultaneously (panic)Arming: Arming the alarm system is an action thatprepares it to sound an alarm if a zone is violatedby motion or by opening a door or window, as thecase may be. The control panel may be armed invarious modes (see AWAY , HOME, INSTANT andLATCHKEY ).AWAY: This type of arming is used when theprotected site is vacated entirely. All zones, interior and perimeter alike, are protected.Chime Zones: Allow you to keep track of activity inthe protected area while the alarm system is in thedisarmed state. Whenever a chime zone is "opened",the buzzer beeps twice. The buzzer doesn't beep,however, upon closing the zone (return to normal).Residences can use this feature to annunciatevisitors or look after children. Businesses can use itto signal when customers enter the premises orwhen personnel enter restricted areas.Note: Your installer will never designate a 24-hourzone or a fire zone as a chime zone, because bothzone types actuate an alarm if disturbed while thesystem is in the disarmed state. Although one zone or more are designated as chimezones, you can still enable or disable the chimefunction.

    Control Panel: The control panel is a cabinet thatincorporates the electronic circuitry andmicroprocessor that control the alarm system. Itcollects information from various sensors, processesit and responds in various ways. It also includes theuser-interface - control keys, numerical keypad,display, sounder and loudspeaker.Disarming: The opposite of arming - an action thatrestores the control panel to the normal standbystate. In this state, only fire and 24-hour zones willsound an alarm if violated, but a panic alarm mayalso be initiated. Disturbed Zone: A zone in a state of alarm (thismay be caused by an open window or door or bymotion in the field of view of a motion detector). Adisturbed zone is considered not secured. Forced Arming: When any one of the system zonesis disturbed (open), the alarm system cannot bearmed. One way to solve this problem is to find andeliminate the cause for zone disturbance (closingdoors and windows). Another way to deal with this isto impose forced arming - automatic de-activation ofzones that are still disturbed upon termination of theexit delay. Bypassed zones will not be protectedthroughout the arming period. Even if restored tonormal (closed), bypassed zones will remainunprotected until the system is disarmed.Permission to force arm is given or denied by theinstaller while programming the system. HOME: This type of arming is used when people arepresent within the protected site. A classic exampleis night-time at home, when the family is about toretire to bed. With HOME arming, perimeter zonesare protected but interior zones are not.Consequently, motion within interior zones will beignored by the control panel, but disturbance of aperimeter zone will cause an alarm.Instant: You can arm the system AWAY-INSTANTor HOME-INSTANT, thereby canceling the entry

    delay for all delay zones for the duration of onearming period.For example, you may arm the control panel in theHOME-INSTANT mode and remain within theprotected area. Only perimeter protection is active,and if you do not expect somebody to drop in whilethe system is armed, alarm upon entry via the maindoor is an advantage.To disarm the system without causing an alarm, useyour control keypad (which is normally accessiblewithout disturbing a perimeter zone) or use a keyfobtransmitter.

    APPENDIX B. HOME FIRE ESCAPE PLANNING

    Fire can spread rapidly through your home, leavingyou a short time to escape safely. Your ability to getout depends on advance warning from smoke

    detectors and advance planning - a home fire escapeplan that everyone in your family is familiar with andhas practiced. Pull together everyone in your household and

    make an evacuation plan. Draw a floor plan of your home, showing two

    ways out of each room, including windows. Dontforget to mark the location of every smokedetector.Test all smoke detectors (by a qualified testinglaboratory) periodically, to ensure to ensure theirserviceability. Replace batteries as required.

    Make sure that everyone understands theescape plan and recognizes the sound of smokealarm. Verify that the escape routes are clear andthat doors and windows can be opened easily.

    If windows or doors in your home have securitybars, make sure that the bars have quick-releasemechanisms on the inside, so that they can beopened immediately in an emergency case.Quick release mechanisms wont compromiseyour security, but they will increase your chancesof safely escaping a home fire.

    Practice the escape plan at least twice a year,making sure that everybody is involved - from

    kids to grandparents. Allow children to master fireescape planning and practice before holding afire drill at night when they are sleeping. Theobjective is to practice, not to frighten, so tellingchildren there will be a drill before they go to bedcan be as effective as a surprise drill. If childrenor others do not readily waken to the sound ofthe smoke alarm, or if there are infants or familymembers with mobility limitations, make sure thatsomeone is assigned to assist them in fire drilland in the event of an emergency.

    Agree on an outside meeting place whereeveryone can meet after theyve escaped.Remember to get out first, and then call for help.Never go back inside until the fire departmentgives the OK.

    Have everyone memorize the emergency phonenumber of the fire department. That way anymember of the household can call from a cellularphone or a neighbors home.

    Be fully prepared for a real fire: when a smokealarm sounds, get out immediately and once youare out, stay bout - leave the firefighting to theprofessional!

    If you live in an apartment building, make surethat you are familiar wit the building evacuationplan. In case of a fire, use the stairs, never the

    elevator.Tell guests or visitors to your home about yourfamilys fire escape plan. When visiting otherpeoples home, ask about their escape plan. If theydont have a plan in place, offer to help them makeone. This is especially important when children arepermitted to attend sleepovers at friends' homes.
