AJAX – The BasicsAJAX, or Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, has emergedas a popular industry solution, allowing developers tocombine existing Web technologies to create highlyinteractive and responsive Web interfaces. The basic ideaof AJAX is to open up a new line of communicationbetween the client and server, where data can betransferred asynchronously, usually as XML. Since the datatransfer is asynchronous, the UI on the page does not haveto ‘wait’ for the transfer to complete; in other words – nopostback. The end user can continue to use the page,

while bytes are imperceptibly transferred in the back-ground. With such performance gains to be realized, AJAXcan be a powerful tool in any Web developer’s arsenal.

Composite UI Application Block (CAB)Along with the release of Visual Studio® 2005, the MicrosoftPatterns and Practices Team has delivered a new frameworkfor developing desktop-based, smart-client applicationscalled the Composite UI Application Block (CAB).

The CAB is composed of a standardized architecture andcomponent communication services that simplify theconstruction of smart clients. It is a non-visual frameworkthat allows UI controls to be cleanly composed intoapplication-specific workspaces and smartparts. The CABalso includes services that simplify workspaces and smartPart communication. The power of the CAB lies within itsability to simplify UI component composition, decouple UIlayer communication, and facilitate SmartPart reuse.

While Visual Studio 2005 and the CAB provide a powerfulset of frameworks for smart-client applicationdevelopment, these two tools alone do not provide all that is needed to efficiently develop the kinds of visuallyappealing and productive applications that business usersare demanding today. What is missing is a complete set ofenterprise-class visual user interface tools that seamlesslyinteroperate with the CAB framework.
