Page 19: PowerGlove Personal Fitness Assistant(PFA)...mnHr: Displays your minimum heart rate since last reset. fatb: Displays your fat burning zone. crdi: Displays your cardio training zone.

Q. What is the advantage of the PowerGlove overthe heart rate monitors that are on the handgrips ofmost exercise equipment at my fitness club?

A. The PowerGlove offers several uniqueadvantages over heart rate monitors found onexercise equipment, which offer just an estimatedsnapshot of your caloric burn while you are usingthem.

Second, the convenience of the PowerGlovepermits you to wear it during your entire workoutas you move from warm-up to each station orexercise to exercise and during cool down whenyour heart rate and caloric burn remain elevated. This gives you a more dynamic andcomprehensive picture of the total end-to-endeffectiveness of your exercise session.

Third, the Power Glove adds value to any exerciseequipment you use or may have purchased since itis always available to give you feedback on theeffectiveness of that equipment.

Q. Can the PowerGlove tell me if I am overtraining?

17

Page 20: PowerGlove Personal Fitness Assistant(PFA)...mnHr: Displays your minimum heart rate since last reset. fatb: Displays your fat burning zone. crdi: Displays your cardio training zone.

A. Since the PowerGlove will allow you tobecome familiar with your heart rate during alltypes of activity, including your resting heart rate, you will be able to see a typical sign of overtraining if your resting heart rate remains 5-10beats higher than normal for an extended period oftime.

Q. Can I use the PowerGlove during weighttraining?A. Yes. The PowerGlove can be particularlyuseful if you are monitoring your heart ratebetween sets. For instance if you are power liftingyou may want to see your heart rate move back toresting level between sets, while if you aremoving quickly from station to station for aerobicor endurance training the PowerGlove will helpyou keep your heart rate elevated with constantfeedback. Due to physical disruption of the sensorwhile actually lifting you may occasionally notesome loss of the heart rate signal but thePowerGlove will quickly recover once you rest orare between sets.

TroubleshootingSymptom: My PowerGlove will not turn on.

Your glove may need to be recharged. It isdesigned to turn off if the battery charge fallsbelow a certain point. If this happens thePowerGloveautomatically stores your personal

18

Page 21: PowerGlove Personal Fitness Assistant(PFA)...mnHr: Displays your minimum heart rate since last reset. fatb: Displays your fat burning zone. crdi: Displays your cardio training zone.

data. Be sure to turn the Power Glove off duringrecharging and if it has discharged keep it on thecharger for at least 12 hours to fully recharge thebattery.

Symptom: My heart rate does not appear or ittakes a long time for it to appear.

Ensure that the sensor is placed correctly on yourthumb tip and that it is not too tight or too loose. You may want to try the alternate position at thebase of the thumb or base of the index finger. Theheart rate display should appear almost instantlyalthough it normally takes a few beats to stabilizeat your actual heart rate. If your hand is very cold, circulation may be reduced which will degrade thesensor’s ability to see your pulse. Try warmingyour hand or even placing it under warm runningwater. If your hand is very dry, try putting somelotion on your thumb or base of your index fingerwhere the sensor is placed.

Symptom: Sometimes my glove loses my heartrate. Is this normal?

This is normal. The PowerGlove is alwayslooking for your pulse and if it loses it for amoment, don’t worry, it will reacquireautomatically. Sometimes a minor repositioningof the sensor or readjustment of the Velcro strap isnecessary. Temporary loss of signal will have a

19

Page 22: PowerGlove Personal Fitness Assistant(PFA)...mnHr: Displays your minimum heart rate since last reset. fatb: Displays your fat burning zone. crdi: Displays your cardio training zone.

negligible effect on the caloric calculation.

Symptom: During certain exercises my heart rateseems to be too high or too low.

Your PowerGlove has been designed to operate inan exercise environment and under mostcircumstances and during most activities thePower Glove is extremely accurate. However, your PowerGlove, like all heart rate monitors willsometimes have your pulse masked by a slippageof the sensor, extreme motion or physical pressureon the sensor. These excursions are temporaryand typically will not exceed 10% error. Oncethese conditions are corrected or cease your glovewill quickly recover and display a normal reading. These occasional excursions will not significantlyaffect your caloric burn results since they areaveraged over time.

Remember, for best performance, keep your handrelaxed during running or walking and lightly restthe tip of your index finger against your thumb toensure optimal results.

Appendix A-Importance of Monitoring FitnessActivity and Hints for Using your PersonalFitness Assistant

Aerobic Activity (running, aerobics, dance, kickboxing, treadmill, stair climber, stationarybike, walking) exercises your heart, lungs andcirculatory system to process oxygen moreefficiently. It also burns fat and increasesmetabolism. While the American College ofSports Medicine recommends that to achievemaximum aerobic exercise benefit that youelevate your heart rate to 60-90% of its maximum, increased benefits can also be achieved byelevating the heart rate above its normal restingrate.

For optimal exercise, the PowerGlove providestarget heart zone (cardio and fat burning)information, while for less intense exercise, thePowerGlove shows calories burned based on heartrate activity and your personal data. By simply

21

Page 24: PowerGlove Personal Fitness Assistant(PFA)...mnHr: Displays your minimum heart rate since last reset. fatb: Displays your fat burning zone. crdi: Displays your cardio training zone.

slipping on the PowerGlove you will haveimmediate and continuous access to informationon how much you are exercising your heart andhow much that exercise is burning calories.

The advantage of the PowerGlove is that you donot have to remove it if you are involved in anumber of different exercise activities. Since yourheart rate will generally remain elevated as youmove from one activity to another, the dynamicmonitoring of the PowerGlove will provide youwith a more complete and accurate picture of thebenefits of your fitness activity.

By using the PowerGlove during exercise activityyou can set and monitor goals for duration, intensity and frequency of activity to achievedesired results. The PowerGlove feedback takesthe guesswork out of the benefits being achieved. You will now be able to increase or decreaseactivity levels to accomplish specific goals forconditioning or calorie counting. The PowerGloveallows you to monitor and achieve optional caloricburn by extending the length of a walk or run orby taking a few extra trips up and down the stairsduring the course of daily activities.

Muscle Strengthening Exercises such ascalisthenics, weightlifting or any activity thatmakes you flex muscles repeatedly makes thebody burn more calories. This type of activity

22

improves bone density, builds muscle and reducesbody fat. The PowerGlove feedback permits youto monitor your heart rate between repetitions andto monitor progress in terms of shorter recoverytime. The convenience and ease of use of thePowerGlove makes it an ideal complement to in-home or workout center activities for musclestrengthening activities.

Calorie CountingThe PowerGlove is a powerful feedback tool to assistyou in planning and sustaining an effective caloriecounting and complementary exercise managementprogram. Use the chart below to log daily caloriesburned and the calories you burn during various typesof exercises as you use your PowerGlove . Doing thisand comparing these feedback numbers againstcalories consumed will assist you in managing yourprogram. This log can also help you plan yourexercise activities by permitting you to “mix andmatch” calorie burning exercises of differentintensities and time lengths around your personalschedule or meal plans to achieve overall goals. Onone day you schedule a two-mile run to burn yourtarget calories, while on another day you may onlyhave time for a 10-minute exercise bike ride. Byknowing the typical calories you personally burn foreach of these activities, you may now plan yourmeals and activities accordingly. Note: Consult yourdoctor before beginning any exercise routine usingthe PowerGlove.
