This contract, taken together with the ac-tivities now underway in Argentina, con-firms that Ansaldo Nucleare is one of themain players in programmes addressedto the long-term operation, modernisa-tion and safety of pressurised water/heavy water reactors (PWR/ PHWR).

The work covered by the contract will becompleted by the end of December2021. The scope of the project includesthe engineering and construction of abunkered building (BB2), including itsauxiliary systems (HVAC, Fire Fighting,Lighting, etc.), plus the engineering, pro-curement, installation and commissioningof the alternative safety injection system,the alternative emergency water feed sys-tem, and the emergency electric powersystem.

The decision toestablish a presence in this country isdriven by the fact that Nigeria is the mosthighly-populated country on the continent(190 million inhabitants) and its electricpower deficit is very high, with currentaccess to electricity standing at about25%-30%. Nigeria is Sub-Saharan Africa’slargest market and is in a state of constantevolution, dominated by Independent PowerProducers (IPPs). The surrounding countriestoo, with which Nigeria has trading relations,including Ghana, Ivory Coast andCameroon, are expanding rapidly too interms of both population and the demandfor power. The new company representsan important presence in the area, tomonitor any prospects for new plants andopportunities for service work, also on ma-chinery produced by third parties. This unusual contractual arrangementturned the project into a true challengefrom many operational and administrativepoints of view, including the managementof inter-consortium relations and the roleplayed by Ansaldo Energia in the con-sortium, as well as the coordination ofeveryday activities with the consortiumleader and specialists in the various fieldsof work.It was a challenge that involved the entireAnsaldo Energia Group, both on and off-site, and only ongoing, intensive relationswith head office made it possible to man-age the problems that arose and achievethe final goal.A total of 360 man/months of consultingwere provided on-site, which translatesinto over 80 people at work in rotation,delivering over 70,000 hours of technicalassistance in the field.The materials procurement and handlingeffort was truly enormous: by the end ofwork, over 21,000 m3 of materials weigh-ing over 6,600,000 kg had been shippedby sea from Genoa. All this was performed under Free OnBoard terms (FOB, according to which

Il serviceMa il lavoro non si è concluso con l’entratain esercizio della centrale: se in quella datainfatti è terminata una sfida, proprio daquel momento ne è iniziata una nuova peril service. Il Gruppo Ansaldo Energia infattimanterrà la sua presenza in loco con uncontratto di manutenzione a lungo termine(LTMA) per le turbine a gas della durata di25 anni. Sempre in ambito Service, Anche

gua… tra tecnici e maestranze c’erano almeno 8 nazionalità diverse(Koreani, Italiani, Belgi, Francesi, Cinesi, Filippini, Indiani, Pakistani, edaltre nazionalità in rappresentanze numeriche minori) e un target moltoambizioso in termini di tempi di realizzazione. Stesso dicasi per lo schemacontrattuale, diverso dal solito. Non un EPC, non un TFA, ma un TFA conpartnership insieme a Hyundai. Ci è stata richiesta una forte collaborazione/integrazione con tutte leparti interessate, Cantiere, Ingegneria, Logistica, Qualità, ed ovviamentecon la Gestione. Un Team dedicato alla Gestione è stato residente in cantiere per mesi edè stato fulcro di tutta la raccolta dati ed informazioni. Nel complessouna esperienza faticosa e contemporaneamente interessante, che hami arricchito molto. In conclusione non posso che ringraziare tutto il Team per la grande col-laborazione e per il grande spirito di sacrificio dimostrato sul campo neimesi di lavoro intenso svolto in condizioni climatiche estreme.

atmospheric conditions, including peaks of over 50-degree-Centigradeheat in summer; working in a truly multiethnic and multilingual environ-ment… at least eight different nationalities were represented by engi-neers and workers (Korean, Italian, Belgian, French, Chinese, Philippine,Indian, Pakistani and other less well represented nationalities) and avery ambitious timetable. The contractual arrangement was also out ofthe ordinary, involving neither an EPC nor a TFA, but a TFA in partnershipwith Hyundai. We were asked for extensive collaboration/integration with all interestedparties (Worksite, Engineering, Logistics, Quality and, clearly, Manage-ment) and had a dedicated Management Team working onsite for months,acting as a pivot point for data and information gathering. Taken as awhole, it was a tiring experience, but also an interesting one that hasgiven me a lot. To sum up, I would like to thank the whole team for theircollaboration and the great spirit of sacrifice demonstrated in the fieldduring many months of work in extreme atmospheric conditions.

A piece of cake! Tutto sommato. Why not? Errore,che fatica! Fabbricare le macchine, ordinare tutto quel materiale, con-segnarlo con puntualità, anzi in anticipo, e seguire con apprensione ilpendolo regolare delle navi Messina che fanno la spola fra Genova e gliEmirati, attraversando zone ancora infestate dai pirati… Tutt’altro che“a piece of cake”, ma – alla fine – a risultati ottenuti, senz’altro unagrande soddisfazione. A piece of cake! Alltold. Why not? Big mistake, what an effort! Manufacturing the machines,ordering all that material, delivering it on time if not early, and monitoringthe regular to and fro of Messina line ships sailing back and forth betweenGenoa and the Emirates, running the risk all the while of pirate attacks…Quite the opposite of “a piece of cake”. But in the end, looking at the re-sults, it can’t be denied that it was a great satisfaction. So, how should Iconclude? Goodbye Mirfa and good luck to my Service area colleagueswho will be taking “care” of it for the next 25 years.

Ogni anno lo spirito di gruppopervade sempre più questa importantemanifestazione che ha visto la sua con-clusione venerdì 21 settembre presso l’-Headquarters di Genova.In questa giornata, si è tenuto pressol’auditorium una sessione di lavori dedicataal tema della sicurezza, che ha coinvoltoi vertici aziendali e la presentazione delleattività svolte nelle varie società oltre auna serie di attività collaterali. tion of the second Safety Day, which isnow a consolidated Group event to pro-mote the value of safety in the workplaceand environmental good practices. Eachyear, the group spirit is an increasingly im-portant feature of this major event, whichwas brought to a close on Friday Septem-ber 21 at the Group’s Genoa Headquar-ters.Among the day’s events was a work ses-sion held in the auditorium on the issue ofsafety, involving top management and in-cluding a presentation of the activitiesperformed in the various group compa-nies, as well as a series of collateral activ-ities.The session was opened by Ansaldo En-ergia Group Chairman Giuseppe Zampini,who greeted the attendees and ex-pressed his special thanks to the Group’ssuppliers and customers, who make suchan important contribution to sharedgrowth on the path to safety. He stressed

The goal of “Zero Accidents”is such an ambitious one that it cannot beachieved unless everyone makes an ef-fort, starting with the little things that seemmost irrelevant, because we know thatthe human factor plays a significant rolein accidents and near misses. The firststep is for everyone to stay alert, to shareprocedures and to report incidents, be-cause “safety starts with us”.More detailed work then got underwaywith Field Service Director Mr Motta, whoreported on the Group’s experiences atworksite level, emphasising the impor-tance of sharing knowledge, withoutbeing afraid to talk about what needs tobe changed, and also good practices, sothat they become assets for everyone inthe Group. He also stressed the need toshift the focus from training to learningfrom each other, with a view to growingtogether and achieving the main goal of

Un rapporto consolidato che si ècostruito sulla professionalità di AnsaldoEnergia, sulle competenze tecniche, maanche sulla condivisione del valore dellasicurezza, imprescindibile. “Safety First”e “Safety Beliefs” sono gli slogan checaratterizzano la Società irlandese, pro-grammatici di ogni azione che deve met-

tere al primo posto la sicurezza di tutti ilavoratori i quali devono sentire, crederea loro volta che il lavorare in modo sicurodeve essere una condizione sine quanon. La valorizzazione delle buone pratichee l’incoraggiamento costante a rispettarele regole e migliorarsi ogni giorno nelloro lavoro sono i pilastri delle attività. A seguire l’intervento di Marco Moretti,Responsabile Manutenzione e di Mode-stino Colarusso, responsabile safety com-petence Center Direzione EHS di Enipoweri quali hanno accolto con piacere l’invitoa presenziare al nostro Safety Day, inquanto occasione per parlare e ascoltarequanto verte sui temi della Sicurezza, unargomento che non è mai abbastanzapresente. Ansaldo Energia ed Enipower collaboranoda quasi vent’anni e negli ultimi anni lacollaborazione si è incentrata molto sultema della sicurezza – prioritario per Eni-power – attenzione che ha portato a unariduzione significativa degli infortuni. L’Ing.Colarusso ha poi riportato molte espe-rienze vissute “in campo”, che evidenzianocome ancora troppo spesso gli infortunisiano provocati dal fattore umano, aspettosu cui pertanto è necessario intervenirein maniera ancora più forte, trasforman-dolo da essere un dovere – un vincolo –a essere un vero e proprio cambiamento

A tutti i colleghi è stato di-stribuito il numero speciale Power Generation News Safety Day e il li-bretto ABC sulle norme antincendio.

Il safety Day in tutte le Società del Gruppo:Sono stati 83 – ben 32 più dello scorso anno – quest’anno i colleghiche hanno risposto positivamente alla richiesta dell’Azienda di segnalarele loro iniziative individuali e collettive e i corrispondenti risultati rag-giunti nel miglioramento di Sicurezza, Salute e Ambiente sul posto dilavoro. Un trend in crescita che mostra come la cultura della Sicurezzastia diventando parte integrante del proprio modo di vivere il posto dilavoro. L’Ing. Nucci, che ha introdotto la premiazione di questi colleghi,ha sottolineato come eccellere nella sicurezza sia una componente fon-damentale per eccellere nel Business e come questa eccellenza vadasempre perseguita e migliorata, in quanto segno di rispetto per se stessi,per i colleghi, per l’azienda.

He was followed by Enipower EHS De-partment Maintenance Manager MarcoMoretti and Safety Competence CenterManager Modestino Colarusso, who hap-pily accepted the invitation to attend ourSafety Day as an opportunity to talk aboutand listen to safety-related issues, whichcan never receive too much attention.Ansaldo Energia and Enipower have beenworking together for almost two decadesand in recent years the partnership hashad a strong focus on safety, which is apriority for Enipower, resulting in a signifi-cant reduction in the number of acci-dents. Starting in October, Ansaldo Energia has introduced a newnaming scheme for Service Upgrades to its gas turbines.

MXL(x) will be the conventional naming scheme for all platforms. The MXL(x) name is already recognised on the market asidentifying upgrades to Hot Gas Path Parts (HGPP). The number will be serial, based on the last upgrade available. The MXL initials indicate the capacity to operate in dual modein order to maximise the power and efficiency of the engine (M-mode) and/or extend its maintenance periods (XL-mode).

Upgrades entailing only maintenance period extension will bereferred to as XL.The new naming scheme also provided the opportunity for acomprehensive review of the information material availableabout Ansaldo Energia Group Service activities. The newupgrade data sheets and brochures for all Group engines areavailable for download from the www.ansaldoenergia.comwebsite.

In the final quarter of 2017, the AnsaldoEnergia team took part in three UserConferences, which provide an impor-tant opportunity to meet the end users ofour gas turbines. The User Conferences are organisedover three days, giving attendees thechance to meet experts from the mainmanufacturers. The Group has decided to invest heavilyin events of this type, because for oper-ators the world over they represent achance to learn about best practices andimprovements directly from the expertsand, for Ansaldo Energia, a valuable op-portunity to gain a firsthand understand-ing from customers about how toprovide support for their operating andmaintenance needs. In September, the Group took part in thethirteenth Asia Pacific v94.3A/V84.3A

The Group has been attending this eventfor several years now, with the aim ofraising our visibility and presenting our-selves as a major player with expertise inthe service market for these engines.

The work session and a lunch sponsoredby Ansaldo Energia provided opportuni-ties to get to know existing and potentialusers, as well as to showcase our capa-bilities.

The SGT5-4000F (AE/V 94.3A) UserConference was held in Madrid this yearand the Ansaldo Energia service teammade its presence felt at the event, be-cause the service market for 94.3A en-gines is a highly competitive one.

The main requests raised by operatorswere for increased flexibility in a challeng-ing market and the ability to deliver spe-cific, targeted solutions. It was on theseissues that our Group colleagues fo-cused their presentations, introducingour strategic service initiatives and theentry onto the market of our well-re-ceived MXL Upgrade packages.

The remaining time allocated to AnsaldoEnergia was taken up by a highly popularQ&A session.

One of the initiatives to have the most im-pact was the evening event organised byAnsaldo Energia for all Users, with an un-forgettable dinner at and a guided tour ofthe Santiago Bernabeu stadium, includ-ing access to the dressing rooms, mu-seum and pitch side.

In conclusion, the 94.2 User Conferencetook place in Vienna from November 21to 23 and the Ansaldo Energia ServiceTeam was there.

The 7F Users Conference (San Anto-nio, TX, USA, May 15th – 17th) was

attended by 230 users, with approxima-tely 1/3rd 1st time attendees.

As a Platinum sponsor, PSM had a dou-ble premium booth both nights, an ad inthe Users’ Program, and logo placementon the 7F Users Group website, agenda,and sponsorship page. PSM was invited to attend Mondaynight’s Welcome Reception & Dinner aswell. Booth and presentations were reallysuccessful. Hardware displayed included FlameShe-etTM cutaway, GTOP transition piece,Cast-in tip plate 1st bucket cutaway, Lasertip weld process example, S13-S16example part, S17- EGV example part,AutoTune box with movie and PSM vi-deos. Topics of presentations included opera-tional flexibility upgrades, namely Flex-Suite, FlameSheetTM, and GTOP3.1. A redacted copy of the presentation wasprovided to the event organizers and wasadded to the 7F Users Group website.Eastman presented a positive update onFlameSheetTM operation over the pastyear to the entire user assembly.

This was done at the request of the usersteering committee, in response to cu-stomer interest in the topic.

7F User Group Event

Alla 7F Users Conference (San Antonio,TeX, USA, 15-17 maggio) hanno par-

tecipato 230 users, di cui circa un terzoera presente per la prima volta. recentemente a Dubai, EAU, dal 10 al 12 ottobre. The inaugural Middle East Rotating Machinery Technology & In-novation Conference (ME RoTIC) was recently held in Dubai,

UAE on 10-12 October. The objective of the event was to discussinnovative solutions addressing the unique challenges of mainte-nance and reliability of local operator’s rotating machinery. The Middle East represents one of the fastest growing regions forpower generation in the world, with Saudi Arabia alone expecting7% year-over-year growth for the foreseeable future. Saudi ElectricCorporation, or SEC, is the largest operator of Frame 7B/E/EA gasturbines in the world (over 250) as well as the largest global ownerof Frame 7F’s with 56 either operating or in construction. Aside from electricity needs such as for air conditioning, over 50%of the country’s water comes from seawater desalination, whichrequires tremendous amounts of electrical power. Ansaldo Thomassen Gulf (ATG), part of the OSP™ team based inAbu Dhabi, has been successful in increasing their business withSEC for Frame 7B/E/EA hot gas path repairs. Additionally, Ansaldo Energia has just recently opened a ServiceHub in Dubai, allowing improved customer responsiveness & localfield service execution. Leveraging the ATG and Ansaldo presence with customers in thisregion, PSM and the Regional Sales team have been active, pro-moting our capability & experience with high-technology servicesolutions on the GE 7F/9F gas turbines, including rotor lifetime ex-tension assessments, repair and exchange programs. Dr. ScottKeller, Technical Lead for Structures from PSM’s Engine IntegrationGroup, presented our rotor solution experiences, which led to moredetailed discussions with executive representatives from SEC andAramco at our booth outlining potential next steps and actions forservicing their gas turbine fleets.

Lostand è stato rielaborato per assicurare a tutti i visitatori un’espe-rienza davvero immersiva nel mondo di Ansaldo Energia, deisuoi prodotti e delle sue capabilities. Tre grandi archi tematici in-troducevano i visitatori nei core business del Gruppo: le newunits, gli impianti e il service. Dotati di un tablet era possibile in-quadrare alcune immagini all’interno dello stand per scoprire ca-ratteristiche dei prodotti e della capacità di service. Inoltre nel-l’arco dedicato alle competenze del gruppo nel campo degliimpianti era possibile vivere una vera e propria esperienza im-mersiva nella realtà virtuale, navigando tra due impianti AnsaldoEnergia. Un’esperienza che ha fortemente coinvolto i visitatori, iquali hanno avuto la possibilità di “portarsi a casa” l’esperienzadi realtà virtuale di Ansaldo Energia, grazie alla nuova APP “An-saldo Energia VR” e a degli speciali occhiali che venivano distri-buiti presso lo stand. Nelle sessioni tecniche sono stati presentatida parte dei colleghi 6 paper in differenti sessioni, tematiche cheè stato poi possibile approfondire in stand in incontri dedicati.Nel secondo giorno di manifestazione inoltre, è stata organizzataper circa trenta clienti selezionati una Site Visit presso la centraledi Niehl, proprietà RheinEnergie, dove è installata una delle ultimeturbine GT26, esempio di turbina Ansaldo Energia dotata diestrema versatilità e flessibilità. In questo contesto è stato pos-sibile presentare ai clienti intervenuti le performance di questaturbina e le capacità del team Ansaldo Energia, sia nel campodelle new units che in quello del service a supporto. Energia with the partecipation of the CEO Filippo Abba’ at-tended the fair this year with a new communication style and amore digital approach. The stand was given a makeover to pre-sent all visitors with a truly immersive experience in the world ofAnsaldo Energia, its products and its capabilities. Three overar-ching themes introduced visitors to the Group’s core business:new units, plants and servicing. In the theme area dedicated to the group’s plant expertise, vis-itors were given a totally immersive virtual reality experience in-side two Ansaldo Energia plants. It was an incredibly engagingexperience for visitors, who were given the chance to takeAnsaldo Energia’s virtual reality experience home with them, inthe form of the new “Ansaldo Energia VR” app and the specialglasses handed out at the stand.In the technical sessions, our colleagues presented six papersin different sessions on different subjects, which were then dis-cussed in more depth at specially organised meetings at ourstand.On the second day of the event, a site visit was organised forabout thirty selected customers to the Niehl power plant ownedby RheinEnergie, where one of the most recent GT26 turbinesis installed, providing an excellent example of an Ansaldo Ener-gia turbine designed for extreme versatility and flexibility. Against this backdrop, the customers invited were given anoverview of the turbine’s performance and the capabilities of theAnsaldo Energia team, both in the field of new units and in sup-port services. Nel secondo giorno dimanifestazione, inoltre, sono stati invitati alcuni clienti sele-zionati dell’area a un evento di presentazione del Gruppo An-saldo Energia e in particolar modo della branch sudafricana,per mostrare le capacità del gruppo e il forte radicamento sulterritorio, in grado di garantire soluzione e risposte mirate alleesigenze del mercato.

Anche quest’anno Ansaldo Energia ha preso parte al-l’Africa Energy Forum, un’importante occasione per in-

contrare potenziali clienti e investitori attivi sul continenteafricano. La manifestazione si è tenuta a Copenaghen, dal 7al 9 giugno e la nostra Azienda si è presentata con uno standmirato a mostrare direttamente ai visitatori le referenze delGruppo in Africa che mostrano una conoscenza diretta efortemente radicata del nostro Gruppo. La presenza di nu-merose branch e società operative sul territorio garantisceuna conoscenza diretta dell’ambiente e una conseguentevicinanza a quelle che possono essere le peculiarità del mer-cato dei vari paesi.

At the fifth POWER-GEN & DistribuTECH Africa event,Ansaldo Energia met customers and visitors at its stand,

which was equipped with all the digital equipment needed to letthem experience a new way of learning about Ansaldo Energia.Great interest was shown in both the technical sessions and thehardware on show at the stand (service blades and a microturbine rotor), as well as all the possibilities offered by virtualreality. On the second day of the event, various selected customersfrom the area were invited to a presentation of Ansaldo Energiaand the South African branch in particular, to demonstrate theGroup’s capabilities and deep roots in this geographical area,as well as its ability to guarantee solutions and answersdesigned specifically to satisfy market needs.

Once again this year, Ansaldo Energia attended the AfricaEnergy Forum, which represents an important opportunity

to meet potential customers and investors active on the Africancontinent. Held in Copenhagen from June 7 to 9, our Company took a standto the event that was designed to show visitors the Group’sreferences in Africa, demonstrating our first hand expertise anddeep roots in the continent. Numerous branch offices andoperating companies in local areas ensure first hand knowledgeabout the working environment and therefore our familiarity withthe peculiarities of the market in individual countries.

La Asian Power Week si è tenuta quest’anno a Bangkok, inThailandia. Ansaldo Energia ha partecipato con il suo

This year, Asian Power Week was held in Bangkok, Thailand.Ansaldo Energia took its new digitised stand to the show and

presented multiple papers in the technical sessions. The tradefair was a great success in terms both of visitors and of meetingswith existing and potential customers. The interactive standencouraged more engagement with visitors, who got to knowabout the Group’s products and services in a more memorableand effective way. Asia is confirming its prospects as an extremelyinteresting area for our Company and our sales colleagues, whohave extensive and longstanding experience in the area, wereinstrumental in organising meetings. One particularly usefulopportunity to meet and do business was provided by the SiteVisit to the North Bangkok II plant owned by EGAT, where theGroup has installed and maintains a GT26 turbine. During the visit,we were able to present our capabilities and expertise in greaterdetail. Ansaldo Energia will also be present at next year’s PowerGen Asia, which is planned for September 2018, in Jakarta.

Dal 9 all’11 ottobre, Ansaldo Energia ha partecipato all’Inter-national Gas Cooperation Summit, a Durban. Il convegno

ha costituito una piattaforma per promuovere l’obiettivo del SudAfrica di creare un’infrastruttura per il gas su larga scala, cheattualmente non esiste nel paese, a partire dai rigassificatori perl’importazione di GNL (gas naturale liquido) e dalle relative cen-trali elettriche a ciclo combinato, con una potenza fino a 3 GW.L’IGCS, inaugurato dal Ministro dell’Energia della Repubblicadel Sud Africa, ha riunito diversi rappresentanti di alto livello disocietà globali, interessate allo sviluppo dell’infrastruttura per ilgas e l’elettricità in questa regione, fra cui: fornitori upstream dipetrolio e gas, costruttori di centrali elettriche, società EPC eimprese di costruzione, oltre a consulenti per aspetti finanziari,legali e normativi. Ansaldo Energia participated from the 9th to the 11th Octoberto the International Gas Cooperation Summit in Durban. The

conference was a platform for South Africa’s aspirations to cre-ate the large-scale gas infrastructure which the country currentlylacks, starting with regasification terminals for the import of LNG(liquid natural gas) and with the associated combined cyclepower plants for up to 3 GW.The IGCS, opened by the Minister of Energy of the Republic ofSouth Africa, brought together several high level representativesof global companies interested in the development of the re-gional gas and power infrastructure: upstream O&G suppliers,power plant developers, EPC and construction companies, in-vestment, legal and regulatory advisors.Ansaldo Energia, which set up a stand at the conference venue,was represented by the South African Branch and by Mr. StefanoBorsarelli, VP Sales Africa, who also participated to the panelsession “The Local Opportunities from South Africa’s Gas Mar-ket”. During the discussion particular evidence was given to therecent EPC experience that Ansaldo Energia has acquired inSouth Africa, thanks to the successful execution of the twopower plants of Avon, near Durban, and Dedisa, near Port Eliz-abeth, for a total electric power of 1,000 MW.As a side event offered to a group of 30 conference delegates,Ansaldo Energia organized a guided visit to the Avon powerplant. The 2-hour tour was particularly well-received by the del-egates, as demonstrated by the attendance level which reachedthe maximum allowed by the plant management. Participatingdelegates attended a presentation and Q&A session on AnsaldoEnergia and on the local erection and commissioning experience,and were then walked by Project Director Andrea Chiarattithrough the different areas and buildings of the power plant.

generatori idroelettrici grazie alle espe-rienze maturate nel corso degli anni nellenumerose centrali costruite ed alle atti-vità di service svolte in tutto il mondo.Forte di questa storia, Ansaldo Energiaè stata scelta da A2A Energia SPA, mag-giore multiutility italiana e secondo pro-duttore nazionale di energia, per un in-tervento di service che prevede lasostituzione dei rotori di due dei tregruppi dell’ impianto idroelettrico di Pre-madio (SO),con nuove unità di tecnologiaAnsaldo.Costruita durante il boom economico de-gli anni ’60, questa centrale ospitava duegeneratori di fabbricazione CGE (ora An-saldo Energia) rimasti in esercizio fino aiprimi anni duemila, quando l’impianto hasubito un forte intervento di ammoder-namento con la sostituzione dei genera-tori con unità di differente tecnologia. Per realizzare i nuovi rotori si è optato,così come per il progetto originario, perla soluzione ad albero passante che pre-vede la fabbricazione separata dell’ al-bero rotore e degli anelli che compon-gono la ruota polare, con un successivocalettamento a caldo degli stessi sull’al-bero. Questa soluzione è sicuramente tecni-camente più efficace sebbene pochefabbriche siano in grado di realizzarla;per tale motivo viene spesso preferitaper unità di potenza, e quindi pesi ed in-gombri, inferiori.

La complessità dell’attività può esserefacilmente intuibile citando qualche nu-mero: l’albero rotore è lungo oltre 10 mper un peso di oltre 60 tonnellate, glianelli porta poli (3 nel caso specifico)hanno un diametro vicino ai 4 metri epesano ciascuno circa 35 tonnellate.Complessivamente l’assieme di alberoed anelli arriva a sfiorare le 170 tonnel-late.La strategia adottata, dopo diversi mesidi studi da parte dell’unità Tecnologie diFabbricazione Generatori della Fabbricadi Genova, è stata quella di eseguire ilcalettamento a caldo in verticale, scal-dando gli anelli e movimentando l’albero;ciò ha consentito di riscaldare, e quindifar dilatare, gli anelli fino al momentodella movimentazione dell’albero, per-mettendo così di mantenere il ridottogioco creatosi tra albero e sede del-l’anello (poco meno di 2 mm) per poi fareaffidamento sulla forza di gravità per ilcalettamento dell’albero nell’anello.L’attività è stata eseguita nel repartoCOST (Costruzione Statori) dello stabili-mento genovese di Ansaldo Energia, do-tato delle strutture e dei macchinari ido-nei per realizzare quanto deciso e,soprattutto, dove si è potuto contaresull’esperienza del personale di reparto. Il rotore ha poi proseguito con le lavora-zioni meccaniche di fresatura (repartoMECG - Grande Meccanica) e di torni-tura finale (reparto ROTO – LavorazioneRotori) con il pieno rispetto dei tempi diattraversamento preventivati al cliente.

ergia SpA, Italy’s largest multi-utility andthe country’s second ranking power pro-ducer, to replace the rotors in two of thethree generating sets at Premadio (Sondrio)hydroelectric power station with new unitsbased on Ansaldo technology.Built during the economic boom of the1960s, the plant was equipped with twogenerators built by CGE (now Ansaldo En-ergia), which remained in service until theearly noughties, when the plant underwentradical modernisation work and the twogenerators were replaced with units basedon different technology.To manufacture the new rotors it was de-cided to follow the original design approachand use a pass-through shaft, with therings that form the polar wheel manufacturedseparately and then shrunk fit onto it.This solution is without doubt the mosttechnically effective one, although few fac-tories are capable of performing the work itentails. For this reason it is often thepreferred choice for power units, wherethe weights and dimensions involved aresmaller.The complexity of the work can easily beunderstood by quoting a few numbers: therotor shaft is 10 m long and weighs over60 tonnes, the pole-bearing rings (three inthis particular case) have a diameter ofclose to four meters and weigh about 35tonnes each. Taken as a whole, the shaftand rings weigh close to 170 tonnes.The strategy adopted, after several monthsstudy by the Generator Manufacturing Tech-nologies unit at the Genova Factory, wasto perform the shrink fitting operation verti-cally, by heating the rings and manoeuvringthe shaft onto them. Using this approach,the heating of the rings can continue whilethe shaft is moved into place, making itpossible to maintain the limited clearancecreated between the shaft and the ring

che riunisce l’intera catena del valore del settore tecnologico perturbine a gas stazionarie (generazione di energia e azionamentomeccanico), in Europa e altrove. I membri di ETN sono stati accoltinella sede di Ansaldo Energia dal CEO Filippo Abba’. In totale,120 partecipanti si sono riuniti per dibattere le esigenze e i requisitidel settore delle turbine a gas, oltre alle future attività di ricerca. Nella prima giornata del Workshop, relatori di alto profilo hannofornito il loro parere sulle opportunità legate alla digitalizzazionecome mezzo per ottimizzare il funzionamento delle centrali elet-triche, sulla manifattura additiva per la riparazione in loco deicomponenti, sull’integrazione di sistemi di accumulo di energianelle centrali, sul ruolo dell’idrogeno nello scenario energeticoUE e sulla futura direzione della tecnologia per le turbine a gas. La seconda giornata è stata dedicata a vari incontri paralleli,per discutere le attività e i progetti presentati nell’ambito deiComitati Tecnici ETN (ETN Technical Committees), allo scopodi avviare una collaborazione e sviluppare ulteriormente le ideein nuove iniziative. Oltre al Workshop, a Genova sono state or-ganizzate varie riunioni collaterali, che vertevano su diversi temi,come: ETN High Level User; Conference Advisory Board; stan-dardizzazione delle Micro Turbine a Gas; collaborazione ETN-UK-US National Department of Energy e standardizzazione delFiltraggio dell’Aria. La sera del 4 ottobre, i membri di ETN sono stati invitati a unacena ufficiale presso l’Acquario di Genova con la partecipazionedel CEO e del management di Ansaldo Energia. La cena è statasponsorizzata da Ansaldo Energia. L’Acquario è stato aperto inesclusiva per i partecipanti del Workshop ETN, che hanno avutol’occasione di visitare la struttura prima della cena.

Ansaldo Energia hosted on 4-5 October ETN 2017 Workshop(European Turbine Network), a non-profit membership

association, which brings together the entire value chain of thestationary gas turbine technology (power generation andmechanical drive) community in Europe and beyond. ETN members were welcomed to Ansaldo Energia’s facilities byCEO of Ansaldo Energia, Mr. Filippo Abba'. In total 120participants joined to discuss the gas turbine community’s needsand requirements, as well as the future research activities. During the first day of the Workshop, high level speakers gavetheir review on opportunities related to digitalisation as a meanto optimise the operation of power plants, additive manufacturingfor onsite components’ repair, integration of energy storage inthe power plants, the role of hydrogen in the EU energy scenario, and the future direction of gas turbine technology.

On the second day, parallel sessions were held to discuss theactivities and projects introduced within the ETN TechnicalCommittees, with the aim to start cooperation and furtherdevelop the ideas into new initiatives. Apart from the Workshop,several side meetings were held in Genoa, such as ETN HighLevel User meeting; Conference Advisory Board meeting; MicroGas Turbine standardisation meeting; ETN-UK-US NationalDepartment of Energy collaboration meeting; and Air Filtrationstandardisation meeting. In the evening of 4 October, ETN members were invited to attenda dinner at the Aquarium of Genoa with Ansaldo Energia CEOand management. The dinner was sponsored by Ansaldo Energia. The Aquariumwas open exclusively for the ETN Workshop attendees who hadan opportunity to explore the venue before dining.

Nell’ambito del Programma di Ricerca e Innovazione Eu-ropea Horizon 2020, Ansaldo Energia partecipa al pro-

getto FLEXTURBINE (lfexible Fossil Power Plant for the FutureEnergy market through new and advanced Turbine Techno-logies), un consorzio industriale che ha stabilito un propriopercorso di tecnologie per turbine, con l’obiettivo di svilupparesoluzioni migliori ed efficienti sotto il profilo dei costi per cen-trali elettriche nuove e ad alta efficienza. Allo scopo di mi-gliorare le conoscenze della comunità scientifica e dell’indu-stria sulle turbine, il progetto intende fornire nuove soluzioniper range operativi estesi, con la capacità di prevedere econtrollare le instabilità, creare dispositivi di tenuta e cuscinettiinnovativi, prolungare il ciclo vitale delle turbine e la loro effi-cienza, oltre a migliorare la gestione del ciclo vitale con uncontrollo delle parti critiche e una possibilità di previsionemigliori.Ansaldo Energia è impegnata in due aree di ricerca: la primariguarda lo sviluppo di pale di ultimo stadio resistenti alle in-stabilità, da testare nell’ambiente vapore reale dell’impiantodi prova Doosan Skoda T10 MW, a Plzen.La seconda area è relativa alla valutazione del ciclo vitale deicomponenti. I n the framework of the Horizon 2020 European Research andInnovation Programme, Ansaldo Energia is participating in the

FLEXTURBINE project (Flexible Fossil Power Plant for the FutureEnergy market through new and advanced TurbineTechnologies), an industrial consortium that has established itsown turbine technology roadmap, with the goal of developingbetter and more cost effective solutions for new high efficiencyelectric power stations. With a mission to improve theknowledge possessed by the scientific community and theturbine industry, the project intends to provide new solutions forextended operating ranges, with the ability to predict and controlinstabilities, create innovative seal devices and bearings, extendthe lifecycle of turbines and improve their efficiency, as well asto improve lifecycle management with checks on critical partsand better prediction capabilities.

Ansaldo Energia is working in two research areas. The firstconcerns the development of final stage blades that areresistant to instabilities, for testing in real steam conditions atthe Doosan Skoda T10 MW test plant in Plzen.The second area regards component lifecycle evaluation. Newpower station operating profiles imply new damagemechanisms that have an impact on the lifecycle of buckets andblades, which have to be understood in depth at microstructurallevel, accurately described by theoretical models, and taken intoconsideration in the component design phase.

Come ormai da tradizione, Ansaldo Energia e Ansaldo Nu-cleare hanno visto alcuni dipendenti insigniti della “Stella

al Merito del Lavoro”, onorificenza conferita dalla Presidenzadella Repubblica su proposta del Ministero del Lavoro. La fi-nalità della Stella è di premiare singoli meriti di perizia, labo-riosità e buona condotta morale dei lavoratori dipendenti daimprese pubbliche o private e dà diritto al titolo di “Maestrodel Lavoro”. Nel 2017 sono stati insigniti Lucia Ferrari e Rocco Punturieriper Ansaldo Energia e Alessandro Alemberti per Ansaldo Nu-cleare. Lucia Ferrari, ingegnere meccanico, perfeziona le sue com-petenze all’interno delle ingegnerie dove matura la sua carrieraprofessionale, ricoprendo ruoli di responsabilità e di particolarespecializzazione. Attualmente è Responsabile Ingegneria diProcesso Meccanico. Rocco Punturieri, perito industriale, è un prezioso punto di ri-ferimento per le sue capacità di trasferimento di competenzealle nuove generazioni. Grazie alla sua opera di insegnamentotecnico, professionale e morale, vengono formate le personeche vanno poi a occupare ruoli di responsabilità all’internodei reparti produttivi. Oggi è Capo Officina Premontaggio PartiRotanti. Alessandro Alemberti, fisico, ha maturato una lunga esperienzanell’analisi di sicurezza degli impianti nucleari, nella simula-zione termoidraulica, nella progettazione di componenti inno-vativi di scambio termico, acquisendo notorietà internazionale,come attestato dal numero di pubblicazioni sulle maggiori ri-viste tecniche di settore. Da anni ricopre in Ansaldo Nucleareil ruolo di Responsabile dello Sviluppo delle Competenze Nu-cleari.

In what has become a tradition, the prestigious “Stella al Meritodel Lavoro” honour was conferred on several employees of

Ansaldo Energia and Ansaldo Nucleare by the President of theItalian Republic, at the proposal of the Minister of Employment.The “Stella”, or Star, rewards individual cases of expertise, hardwork and good moral conduct among the employees of publicor private companies, granting them the right to use the title of“Maestro del Lavoro”. In 2017, the honour was conferred on Lucia Ferrari and RoccoPunturieri for Ansaldo Energia and on Alessandro Alemberti forAnsaldo Nucleare.

Lucia Ferrari is a mechanical engineer with a professional careerin the engineering department, where she has acted in positionsof responsibility and considerable specialisation. She is atpresent Mechanical Process Engineering Manager.

Rocco Punturieri is an important asset for his ability to transferexpertise to the new generations. His technical, professional andmoral teaching work contributes to training the people who goon to hold positions of responsibility in production departments.At present he is foreman of the Rotating Parts Pre-AssemblyWorkshop.

Alessandro Alemberti is a physicist with extensive experience innuclear plant safety analysis, thermohydraulic simulation andinnovative heat exchange component design. He also enjoys aninternational reputation, as testified by the number of articles hehas published in sector technical journals, and has many years’experience as the Ansaldo Nucleare Nuclear Skills DevelopmentManager.

Once again this year, AnsaldoEnergia was official sponsor of

the 14th Festival della Scienza,organised in Genoa from October 26to November 5. Ansaldo Energia andIIT held a joint press conferenceentitled “The Birth of a Robot”,describing developments in and theprospects for automation in a specificfield like inspection, together with awider-ranging presentation by IIT onthe use of robots. The focus of the presentation was thestory of Idlir, a robot inspectionsystem for electric generatorscombined with an artificial visionsystem for performing checks on gasturbine combustion chambers.

Taking as his starting point the fact that energy is now anessential part of every activity, our colleague Enrico Pignone,with Carlo Canali from ITT, described how the engines built byAnsaldo Energia to generate power have to operatepermanently at full capacity, which is why research anddevelopment work to find more efficient solutions never stops.Our ally in this mission is Idlir the robot, built by the IstitutoItaliano di Tecnologia [Italian Institute of Technology], which cancheck that everything is as it should be inside complex electricgenerators. Idlir the robot is a product of the agreement todevelop new robot technologies, signed by Istituto Italiano diTecnologia and Ansaldo Energia on December 13, 2016.

Idlir operates inside these generators, in spaces that are toosmall and dangerous for human operators to enter. The highlyappreciative audience at the event was told the story of how therobot was devised and how the researchers at IIT, working withAnsaldo Energia’s engineers, tackled the complex challengesthey faced along the way.

In questa occasione verrà presentatala storia di Idlir, un sistema roboticodi ispezione di generatori elettrici edi visione artificiale per il controllodella camera di combustione delleturbine a gas. Partendo dalla constatazione di come l’energia sia ormai labase di ogni nostra attività, il collega Enrico Pignone, insiemea Carlo Canali, di ITT, ha illustrato come le macchine che pro-ducono energia – che costruisce Ansaldo Energia – debbanofunzionare sempre a pieno regime: per questo la ricerca esviluppo è sempre alla ricerca di soluzioni in grado di assicu-rare la massima efficienza. Un alleato per questa missione è ilrobot Idlir, costruito dall’Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia e capacedi verificare che tutto sia a posto all’interno dei complessi ge-neratori elettrici. Questo robot è stato costruito grazie all’ac-cordo per lo sviluppo di nuove tecnologie robotiche siglato il13 dicembre 2016 tra Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia e AnsaldoEnergia. Idlir si muove dentro questi generatori, in spazi troppo strettie pericolosi per l’uomo. In questa occasione, apprezzata damolti visitatori, è stata raccontata la sua storia: come Idlir èstato concepito e come i ricercatori dell’IIT, collaborando congli ingegneri di Ansaldo Energia, hanno affrontato le complessesfide incontrate.

In occasione delle festività natalizie dello scorso anno An-saldo Energia – insieme a Rina e Fondazione Carige – hanno

scelto di supportare un’attività benefica attiva sul territorio.Tale progetto era stato identificato nella realizzazione dellasesta “Scuola della Pace” di Sant’Egidio sul territorio geno-vese: lunedì 23 ottobre, con l’inaugurazione presso il plessoAldo Moro di Voltri 2 al CEP, il progetto è diventato finalmenteoperativo. Grazie alle tre aziende sopracitate e con la collaborazionedello Studio Rosselli, Sant’Egidio è riuscito a rimettere a nuovoun piano del plesso ormai completamente inutilizzato dellasede scolastica con importanti interventi di ristrutturazione earredamento e a restituirlo al quartiere sotto forma di “Scuoladella Pace”, un luogo che per tre pomeriggi a settimana saràaperto – grazie ai volontari – a più di 100 bambini e ragazzidel del quartiere con attività di doposcuola e con l’ambiziosoprogetto di aprire anche sotto forma di scuola serale.Hanno partecipato all’inaugurazione, oltre a una festante de-legazione del quartiere, l’Amministratore Delegato di RINA,Ugo Salerno e per Ansaldo Energia, Andrea Del Chicca, Re-sponsabile Risorse Umane e Organizzazione, il quale ha sot-tolineato l’importanza della collaborazione per raggiungereobiettivi grandi, volti al miglioramento della nostra città, par-tendo dalle nuove generazioni.

Last Christmas, Ansaldo Energia, Rina and FondazioneCarige chose to support a local charity initiative. The project

selected was the sixth Sant’Egidio “School for Peace” in theGenoa area, which was officially opened on Monday, October23, in the “Aldo Moro” building at Voltri 2 comprehensiveschool.With the help of the three aforementioned companies and thecollaboration of Studio Rosselli, Sant’Egidio has successfullyrefurbished one floor of this formerly unused school building,involving major renovation and interior decoration work, andreturned it to the local community as the “School for Peace”,where for three afternoons a week (with the help of volunteers)it will be open for over 100 children and teenagers from thelocal area, providing after school activities and setting itself theambitious target of opening as an evening school too.The inauguration was attended not only by a festiveneighbourhood delegation, but also by RINA CEO Ugo Salernoand, for Ansaldo Energia, Human Resources and OrganisationManager Andrea Del Chicca, who underscored the importanceof collaboration to achieve ambitious goals, with a view toimproving our city for the new generations.
