October 2015 – 2

The world’s most fuel-efficient excavator, the KOBELCO Hydraulic Excavator, ranging in operating weights up to 85 tons, is now available in South Africa through the newly authorised distributor, Toyota Tsusho Africa, (“TTAF”).

TTAF commenced sales of KOBELCO Hydraulic Excavators in South Africa at the beginning of September 2015, with the official launch taking place at the 2015 Bauma Conexpo Africa in Johannesburg.

Partnering with Eqstra Heavy Equipment, (“EHE”), a division of Eqstra Industrial Equipment (”EIE”), to distribute and service Kobelco excavators in South Africa, TTAF is initially concentrating on the more popular sized machines. These include the 21 ton (SK210LC-8), 26 ton (SK260LC-8) and 35 ton (SK350LC-8) models.

The KOBELCO range, known in the industry as KOBELCO Blue excavators, feature exceptional fuel efficiency, powerful performance, an ultra-comfortable cabin, outstanding durability and easy maintenance. This is combined with an environmentally friendly operation from reduced CO2 emissions and low machine noise and vibration levels.

TTAF, as the appointed distributor for KOBELCO excavators, is responsible for the import of the equipment and spares, while EHE, with the backing of TTAF, is responsible for sales and service of the KOBELCO equipment. Together with EHE, TTAF and KOBELCO are committed to fully support KOBELCO users.

TTAF DISTRIBUTORSHIP WELCOMED BY LOCAL USERSThe outstanding performance of KOBELCO machines is widely

known to the local market, with the machines having been available in South Africa in the past through a previous distributorship. The TTAF distributorship has therefore been welcomed throughout the industry, with visitors to the 2015 Bauma Conexpo Africa expressing a greater

than expected positive reaction. Comments such as “why did it take you so long”, “you should have done it long ago” and “I have had my Kobelco excavator for more than 15 years and it is still going strong with no major breakdowns; it is my most reliable machine to date” were testimony to the eagerness of the market for KOBELCO machines.

With the robustness and durability of KOBELCO machines making them ideal for the wider African market, Kobelco, through TTAF, selected to position itself in South Africa, not only because it is the leading market on the continent, but also as a springboard to expand into Southern Africa. Furthermore, signing the distributorship in the current depressed economy positions KOBELCO well, not only to be ready for the economic upturn, but also to benefit from the tremendous economic growth potential it sees in the African market.

PARTNERSHIP BASED ON STRONG RELATIONSHIPSThe partnership between KOBELCO, TTAF and EHE is based

on strong, established ties between these three major players in the industry.

Toyota Tsusho Corporation (TTC), a parent company of TTAF has already enjoyed a collaboration agreement in China with KOBELCO, covering the sales and production of excavators – a collaboration that has been particularly successful with more than 5,000 units being sold per year, despite the difficult economic conditions.

Selecting EHE to partner in launching KOBELCO in South Africa was also a logical decision for TTAF, given the longevity of the relationship it has enjoyed with EQSTRA in the industrial equipment market, in particular through the highly regarded Toyota Forklift range. This sound relationship is combined with the proven, long-term stability of Eqstra as a leading supplier of distribution, leasing, rental and

value-added services for industrial, materials handling and agricultural equipment in South Africa and various other African countries.

KOBELCOWith its roots dating back to 1930, Japanese manufacturer,

KOBELCO Construction Machinery, produces a full range of crawler excavators for the construction, landscape, rental, aggregate, road building, material handling, site preparation, recycling and ancillary markets. It currently enjoys a 20% market share in Japan and, as a result of its strong and reliable product line-up.

The KOBELCO excavators are not new to the South African market as it has been sold under the New Holland construction machinery name, therefor the decision to introduce the KOBELCO Hydraulic Excavators into the African market is to service the gap in the market created by the termination of KOBELCO’s global alliance with Case New Holland and the tremendous economic growth potential KOBELCO sees in the African market.

STATE-OF-THE-ART PRODUCTIONAll the KOBELCO excavators available to the South African market

will be manufactured in Japan, to the world-renowned Japanese quality standards, with the heavy excavators, 7 tons and up, produced in the KOBELCO Hiroshima factory. This factory, one of the newest and most advanced factories in the world, highlights KOBELCO’s commitment to the health and safety of its people and to the environment. For example, only the highest standards of dust control are applied, resulting in a dust-free, clean environment.

The mini excavator factory, based in Ogaki Japan, boasts the same high standards of products, as do KOBELCO’s other factories in China, Thailand and India.

PIONEERING THE INDUSTRYAs a pioneer in the excavator industry, and a division of Kobe Steel,

Ltd., KOBELCO developed the first electric shovel in 1930, which was also the first piece of construction machinery to be manufactured in

Japan. Since then, KOBELCO’s future has been shaped by the same indomitable spirit, developing many innovative construction machinery products that have changed the face of the industry.

KOBELCO continues to serve its clients as a full-service company specializing in construction machinery. KOBELCO is committed to providing the highest-quality products and excellent service that its customers have come to expect from KOBELCO, with closer ties than ever before to dealers and customers throughout the world.

The company’s business approach places priority on the users of its machines who are in the field. By listening carefully to its customers to identify their requirements of the machines they use, and by continuously scanning the global industry to anticipate emerging trends, KOBELCO is able to proactively and accurately meet the current and future needs of its users.

Customer satisfaction is its primary mandate and KOBELCO builds on its many years of experience in the construction machinery field to enrich its customer-focused approach, which is based on the three key KOBELCO words - simplicity, speed and openness.

TOYOTA TSUSHO CORPORATIONA Toyota Group Company, TTC has been committed to the

development of the South African economy and industrial sector for more than 50 years – a contribution which its plans to accelerate through the Japanese-quality range of KOBELCO Hydraulic Excavators.

Actively embracing the four-tier philosophy system of its shareholders, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, as its business foundation, TTAF’s business philosophy is strategically integrated with the four pillars of the balanced scorecard - Learning & Growth, Business Process, Customer and Financials. TTAF uses these as a fundamental business tool in its PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) Cycle activities, to drive its business strategy, strengthen its commitment to its business values of People, Passion and Performance and achieve its people, business process, customer and financial milestones for 2015, 2020 and beyond.

Stefan Rummel, Managing Director of Messe München, expressed his satisfaction: “We have achieved our goal of welcoming more and higher-quality visitors from the sub-Saharan region. BAUMA CONEXPO AFRICA has now without doubt established itself as a platform for the industry that brings together African and international companies.” Megan Tanel, Vice President for Exhibitions at the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), agrees: “Africa continues to be an important market for our North American equipment manufacturers. BAUMA CONEXPO AFRICA is the event to not only enter into the market but also to engage with existing customers.”

We have seen our major clients but also new customers. We had visitors from countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe or Botswana. The sub-Saharan region was definitely well represented.”

Rocco Lehmann, General Manager at Ammann, summed up the mood: “BAUMA CONEXPO AFRICA is the most important show in Africa. You have to be at BAUMA CONEXPO AFRICA – it’s a must.”

It’s positive feedback about Bauma Conexpo Africa 2015 from members of CONMESA - the Construction and Mining Equipment Suppliers’ Association.

CONMESA, which was involved with South Africa’s first Bauma event in 2013 and participated again as the principal supporter of Bauma Conexpo Africa 2015, represents many leading brands in the industry – many of which were showcased at this prestigious international event.

“We were impressed with the high standard of exhibits this year and the enormous effort the organisers and exhibiting companies put into making the show a great success,” says Stefan Otto, CONMESA’s chairman. “Apart from interesting equipment displays and demonstrations, special attractions included HPE Africa’s paintball course, Caterpillar’s virtual reality experience and the Pitts Special aerobatics team, sponsored by Torre Lifting Solutions.

“Exhibitors were impressed with the availability of vast open outside space to display and operate large machines and high strength floors inside various halls to accommodate extremely heavy equipment.”

Bauma Conexpo Africa 2015 provided the forum for over 600 companies to display and demonstrate a wide range of equipment, including construction, building material and mining machinery, as well as construction vehicles.

This year’s event attracted visitors from over 75 countries, including key players from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya and Nigeria.

FLYING THE KAESER FLAGThere was plenty of activity on the Kaeser Compressors stand at Bauma Conexpo and managing director Geoff Houlgate will definitely be back at the 2018 version of the exhibition .“Our participation at this year’s show was a great success”, he commented.

Kaeser’s core products are electric and diesel driven compressors manufactured by Kaeser Kompressoren SE in Coburg, Germany. The German

holding company remains the largest family owned company in the compressed air business.

Kaeser Compressors South Africa are great protagonists of the holding company’s credo “Built for a Lifetime”. Certainly a look at the company’s products at Bauma reinforced the view that they are tough and superbly designed with the accent on “energy efficiency and reliability”.

There is little doubt that Kaeser’s exhibit at Bauma Conexpo 2015 has left an indelible mark on the local construction equipment industry.

KAESER COMPRESSORS - BUILT FOR A LIFETIME

www.kaeser.com

The growth of the company over the last 10 years is due to customers who have shown loyalty and it seems that the simple philosophy of giving customers good service and friendly support have definitely paid off.

Kaeser core products are Electric and Diesel driven Compressors. These products are supplied to all industries and all environments around the world.

With a wide range of compressor products that start from 50 cfm (1.3 m3/min) to 1300 cfm (35 m3/min) and pressures up to 15 bar, Kaeser is confident that the largest part of the market requirements are easily satisfied.

Kaeser have proved there is alternative equipment which is superior and this, combined with competitive prices and good levels of both equipment and spares stock, will contribute to continued growth. What has surprised customers is that it is possible to deal with an International Company and experience decisions being made in a positive and innovative way and that customers are not treated as just a number.

As an addition to its portfolio of heavy equipment, Eqstra Industrial Equipment (“EIE”) is adding Link-Belt Cranes to its range, following the signing of an agreement giving it the distributorship rights for South Africa and some 17 other countries across Africa.

Manufactured by Link-Belt Construction Equipment, headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, USA and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI) of Tokyo, Japan, Link-Belt cranes are based on a history of innovation and product quality dating back 140 years.

Known worldwide for its telescopic boom and lattice boom cranes, Link-Belt offers the construction industry one of the most diverse line-ups of cranes available. This includes rough terrain cranes (from 30 mt to 135 mt), telescopic truck cranes (from 36 mt to 120 mt), truck terrain cranes (70 mt and 85 mt), all terrain cranes (185 mt and 250 mt), lattice truck cranes (136 mt and 272 mt) and telescopic crawler cranes (from 51 mt to 100 mt).

Besides their cranes’ reliability and smooth, pinpoint hydraulic controls, Link-Belt cranes also provide a number of features that set them apart from their competition. For example, the incorporation of hydrostatic drive on their six-wheel rough terrain cranes eliminates the need for axles and provides a tighter turning radius with greater flexibility on the jobsite. The use of a six-wheel rough terrain crane also allows for lower profile

tires which reduce overall deck and transport height for ease of transport.

A modular approach to attachments make the cranes versatile, while other features of Link-Belt cranes include superior lifting capacities and site maneuverability, as well as excellent road ability and/or transportability. Link-Belt offers the largest telescopic crawler crane that can be transported with its tracks attached.

“We are exceptionally proud to add Link-Belt Cranes to our best-in-class brand offering,” comments Eqstra Heavy Equipment Managing Director, Ronald Erasmus. “Extending our range with such a globally recognized heritage brand has significantly enhanced our capability to offer heavy lift solutions optimised to our customers’ needs. This reinforces our position as a partner choice for the industrial, mining and construction sectors.”

“We believe that when you invest in a Link-Belt crane, you invest in outstanding customer support,” adds Roy Burger, Link-Belt’s International Sales Manager. “As a result, we are delighted to enter into this agreement with Eqstra Heavy Equipment, whose philosophy of building lifetime partnerships with their customers underscores our vision to be a leader in customer service and satisfaction.”

In line with its total commitment to delivering optimal product life-time value to its clients, Eqstra Heavy Equipment will provide comprehensive aftermarket parts, service, and maintenance support on the complete range of Link-Belt cranes it distributes.

PRODUCTION DRIVEN LOADERSSales of Foton Lovol wheel loaders are rapidly increasing as

word-of-mouth referrals bring potential customers to investigate the merits of a manufacturer whose machines cost nearly half the price of new big brand machines while its advanced new engines use significantly less fuel than competitor machines.

Production machines are designed to operate 24-hours per days and seven days per week in almost any type of operating conditions. For this reason they are built to be far stronger and more durable than the average construction-type loader with easy-to-reach service points that allow quicker access for field servicing.

It is precisely for this reason that high production machines traditionally command a significant cost premium over ordinary machines and puts them largely out of the reach of smaller mining, quarrying and materials handling-type applications. The entry of Foton Lovol has however changed this and has turned the market on its head.

BUILDING MOMENTUMAccording to Ernest Human, Dura Equipment Sales marketing

manager, since taking over the lucrative agency in 2012, the Du Randt Group of Companies has turned the brand into a household name within its target market. Sales have increased steadily and are gaining momentum as positive sentiments of the owners of the nearly 150 machines begin to provide proof of the machines’ abilities.

“Foton Lovol is the first Chinese manufacturer to build its machines especially for South Africa to our exact standards and specifications using the best materials and components. As a result of this commitment we invested in over R14-million worth of spares to ensure we can support the machines going forward. We also put in place infrastructure in the form of full workshop facilities at our main branches, as well as investing in people and equipment required to sell, maintain and service our machines wherever they operate within South Africa or even further afield across our borders.

“Our flagship machine, the Foton Lovol FL966-II loader accounts for most of our sales so far especially in coal mining applications where it’s standard 3,8m³ or oversized 5,5m³ bucket

size is able to make short work of coal stockpiles. Likewise the FL958-II machine has found favour among quarry operators where its rugged ability and fuel-sipping consumption makes it ideal for this type of application where low resource prices requires a low cost-of-ownership machine,” says Ernest.

MINE READY MACHINESThe reasons for

Foton Lovol’s success are easy to see. The two top of the range machines come equipped with all the necessary gear to operate on mines. This includes fall on protection (FOPS) and roll over protection (ROPS) cabs, as well as 23.5” L5 tyres that are required for durability in productive environments. Powerful Weichai engines provide more than enough power and the proven technology of the motors allows unsurpassed fuel consumption of approximately 15L per hour during production.

This represents at least a 2-3L per hour saving over most previously used engines and adds up to 72L of fuel saved over a 24-hour period of time which accounts for approximately R30 000 saved per month or R360 000 annually. This is a compelling case especially as a growing number of owners and operators are able to vouch for the quality and efficiency of the machines.

In addition the South African operation backs its products with a 3,000 hour or 24 months factory warranty and is prepared to guarantee customers that if for any reason a machine cannot be repaired within 48 hours, a replacement machine will be loaned to the operators until such time as the machine is up and running again. Yet another incentive to consider Foton Lovol is the fact that the first four services are free.

COMPREHENSIVE RANGEThe range of four loaders includes the Foton Lovol 920-II

loader, which is the smallest in the range and is ideal for small industrial applications, agriculture and yard work such as for hardware stores etc. It has an operating weight of 6.325 tons with a 1.8 ton rated load capacity. Probably the stand-out feature of the loader is its quick coupler, with a wide variety of attachments that include a standard 1m³ bucket, forklift, bailing arm and oil drum attachments and many more to the customer specifications. Inside the cab the operator has a host of comfort and productivity features that includes air conditioner, radio and a pilot control joystick for ease of operation.

The larger Foton Lovol FL936-II has an operating weight 10 600kg and a load capacity of 3 tons. The loader comes standard a host of features that includes dual brakes, Fitted with

a Weichai Deutz motor, industrial type L3 tyres, ROPS/FOPS cab, pilot joystick control as well as a comfortable air-conditioned cab for maximum operator productivity. It has a standard 1.8m³ bucket and is suitable for agricultural applications, as well as retail, sand works, builders suppliers, batching plants etc

The production proven Foton Lovol FL958-II & FL966-II machines are five and six ton machines respectively with operating weights of 17 400kg and 20 640kg. Both have mine specification features that include 23.5” L5 tyres to last longer in productive environments. Fitted with a Weichai engine and driven by powerful ZF4WG200 Transmissions, ROPS/FOPS cabs, dual brakes with large buckets make them ideal for quarrying and coal mining and stockpiling work. Operator productivity is a top priority and offers pilot joystick control, air conditioner and high visibility cab layout.

SUCCESSFUL INTRODUCTION“Our machines have already proven themselves in a number

of high production applications and can be found at Ubuhle Bemvelo, a contractor working at Black Wattle Colliery, Just Coal in Middleburg, Pentalin Trading and Benoni Gold and a growing number of other sites where they have racked up thousands of hours of reliable operation among them.

“With our massive investment in spares and parts we are able to ensure that all our loaders throughout southern Africa can be properly serviced and maintained. Our expanding dealer network covers all the major areas in South Africa including Gauteng, Northern Cape, North West, Kwa Zulu Natal and Cape Town, while the bustling Mpumalanga market is also serviced from nearby Gauteng.

“Foton Lovol machines fill the gap between high-end machines and the used machine market and are ideal for emerging and medium sized operations that cannot afford premium brands, but want the reassurance of a comprehensive warranty backed up by professional service support. Our machines are robust, reliable and supported,” concludes Ernest.

October 2015 – 16

BUILDING CONFIDENCE FALLS BELOW 50The FNB/BER Building Confidence Index lost 9 points to register a level of 44 in 3Q2015.

The fall in building confidence was led by a sharp drop in the confidence of manufacturers and retailers of hardware, on the back of weaker sales and profitability. In contrast, building activity of main contractors, particularly in the non-residential sector, improved. After moderating somewhat in 2Q2015, overall growth in the building sector remained flat in 3Q2015.

The FNB/BER Building Confidence Index fell for the third straight quarter to 44 points, from 53 in 2Q2015. In total, building confidence is 16 points lower compared to the end of last year. The current level indicates that close to 60 per cent of respondents are dissatisfied with prevailing business conditions.

Main contractor confidence lost 3 index points to 45 during the quarter. The lower confidence was not supported by the underlying indices, particularly building activity and profitability. “After deteriorating rather sharply in 2Q2015, building activity improved somewhat in 3Q2015” said John Loos, Property Economist for FNB.

The rise in building activity came mainly from the non-residential market while activity in the residential market stabilised. “The fundamentals do not support the uptick in non-residential building activity,” said Loos. “Office vacancy rates remain high and the

demand for retail space is dwindling as consumer spending comes under increased pressure. This makes it difficult to see a sustained improvement in non-residential building activity,” added Loos. The biggest fall in confidence was recorded among hardware retailers. After rising to 91 in 1Q2015, the confidence of hardware retailers dropped to 66 in 2Q2015 and 37 in 3Q2015. “Hardware retailers have far outperformed other retailers since the start of the year. However, it seems the weak consumer environment is also starting to affect hardware retailers.” noted Loos. “It is unlikely that hardware retail sales will continue to grow at the same pace in 2H2015 as it did in 1H2015”.

Similarly, weak domestic sales and production weighed on the confidence of manufacturers of building materials which fell to 26 in 3Q2015. After gaining some momentum in 2Q2015, the confidence of architects declined to 54 in 3Q2015. In contrast, quantity surveyor confidence edged up to 47.

“In the case of quantity surveyors, confidence was likely boosted by the expectation that work will pick up in 4Q2015” said Loos. Both architect and quantity surveyor activity was lower during the quarter.

Sub-contractor confidence was higher at 56 points in 3Q2015, from 51 in 2Q2015. This marks the fourth consecutive quarter that confidence has been above 50 (in other words the majority of respondents were satisfied with prevailing business conditions). Confidence was higher despite lower activity, although profitability did not deteriorate. According to Loos” the expectation that activity and profitability will be higher in 4Q2015 likely boosted confidence.”

In conclusion: A sharp fall in the confidence of retailers and manufacturers of building material weighed on overall building confidence in 3Q2015. However, the fall in confidence of these two sectors had more to do with slowing domestic demand in general than further weakness in the building sector. This is confirmed by the stabilisation of building activity of main contractors.

Overall, growth in the building sector remained flat (at low levels) in 3Q2015, compared to the moderation in 2Q2015. The outlook for the sector remains rather downbeat. Slowing activity among architects and quantity surveyors suggests that the building pipeline is becoming smaller. In addition, the improvement in non-residential building activity this quarter - which was largely responsible for the improvement in main contractor activity – does not seem sustainable, given the underlying fundamentals.

October 2015 – 20

South Africa’s premium homegrown manufacturer, Bell Equipment, has capitalised on Bauma Conexpo Africa 2015 to showcase its extensive product offering available on the continent and reaffirm its commitment to the African market in the face of tough trading conditions.

In the weeks leading up to the show Bell Equipment released its mid-year results, which showed a modest improvement relative to 2014 with favourable exchange rates, efficiency improvements and a focus on the Northern Hemisphere construction equipment markets dulling the impact of the major difficulties in some of the company’s major markets and industries.

While revenue was R2,9 billion, down 16% from R3,4 billion in the same period last year, the company’s profit after tax increased 67% to R101 million and earnings per share increased 71% to 106 cents. “There has been no significant recovery in the mining activity so we are competing for a slice of a much smaller global pie but as a company we are in much better shape,” said Bell Group Chief Executive, Gary Bell.

He added: “Work in the domestic construction industry is at a low level but we are fortunate that the construction markets in the United States and United Kingdom are doing relatively well at this time. With a greater portion of sales revenue coming from the Northern Hemisphere, our German factory has produced at a higher rate than the past 10 years and it is our intention to localise more product to the region to lower manufacturing costs and manufacture in closer proximity to our major markets.”

While the Russian market is currently a fraction of its previous size due to sanctions and the reliance on mining, Bell has an alliance with Nefaz, a Russian company, whereby Nefaz will manufacture bins for Bell trucks to allow the company to get a foothold in the market when it recovers.

Commenting on the African region, Bell said: “The mining industry in Africa, like elsewhere in the world, is experiencing an unprecedented downturn but our broader range of products that we are able to offer today through our strategic alliances with John Deere, Liebherr, Bomag and Finlay means that we are not totally dependent on mining activity. We’re continuing to introduce new partner products to provide customers with innovative solutions, like the Finlay Dual Power units, which are aimed at giving significant savings on energy costs.”

Among the new partner products on show at BCA 2015 were the Bomag MPH 364 Recycler, which has been developed by Bomag for smaller projects and entry level contractors as well as the Bomag BMP 8500

multipurpose compactor.Bell continued: “Not only do we provide a full line of equipment to

focus on other sectors, like construction and industry, but we have also continued to invest in our support network in the region and have opened four new Customer Service Centres in recent months.”

Bell welcomed Bauma Conexpo Africa 2015 as an opportunity to meet and network with a large number of current and potential customers. “With the tough economic conditions we’ve seen a trend towards customers ‘buying down’ with a stronger demand for used machines than new machines. As a company we are focused on trading back, upgrading and putting our machines back to work as premium used machines because they offer good value compared to the low cost, less reliable new products coming from the East,” he said.

“Customers are also looking to extend the life of their products and as a result the support of our aftermarket, spare parts and service is receiving higher priority so that we can be competitive in terms of what we offer our customers in the way of parts pricing. We are continually monitoring availability levels to ensure we improve our service quality.”

The company, whose 60 year history has been characterised by being adaptable and innovative, has noticed a market trend towards smaller construction machines and has increased the company’s production rate of Tractor Loader Backhoes to cater for demand. Conversely, no improvement in the commodity demand is expected in the short term and production rates for Articulated Dump Trucks at the Bell factory in Richards Bay have been adjusted accordingly.

In spite of the subdued demand for mining machinery globally, progress continues on completing the line of Bell E-series trucks with the larger B35E to B50E range planned for release into Europe in mid-2016. A B50E pre-production machine generated a large amount of interest at Bauma Conexpo Africa and Bell said the company will continue to invest in its ADT research and development programme to drive down operating costs and improve ADT efficiencies while at the same time meeting more stringent global environmental requirements.

Commenting on the success of Bauma Conexpo Africa, Bell Marketing Director, Stephen Jones, said that the company was satisfied with the quality of visitors. “It was great to interface with so many customers, the majority of whom were decision-makers. While we noticed that most of our visitors were from South Africa we were pleased that several customers from other Africa countries, including Tanzania and Kenya, accepted our invitation to visit the Bell stand and we have been encouraged by the positive feedback we have received.”

The recent ISO 9001 accreditation of Johnson Crane Hire underpins the company’s commitment to its SHEQ policies. Not only does this signify compliance with international standards and procedures, it underpins this leading mobile crane hire company’s commitment to quality provision throughout its market offering.

The company, which operates the largest mobile crane fleet in Africa, has long been distinguished as the smartest, as well as the largest in its field. Cedric Froneman, SHEQ executive at Johnson Crane Hire, explains that operating cranes involves a great deal more than just lifting loads and moving them from one place to another. “Best practice and world class procedures have always formed the cornerstone of the company’s operating philosophy and the emphasis placed on quality forms part of its ‘SMART’ strategy.”

The quality management systems (QMS)

at the company focus on the fundamentals of ISO 9001 including customer focus, risk management and continuous improvement throughout the organisation. In addition to this, Johnson Crane Hire’s SHEQ systems are aligned with OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 standards.

Johnson Crane Hire differentiates itself from the other crane hire operators with its SMART strategy. SMART stands for Safety, Maintenance, Availability, Reliability and Total Cost Effectiveness.

With an operating ethos founded on providing a total lifting solution, Johnson Crane Hire is able to supply the right crane for the right job without compromising on safety or quality, and ensuring that the lift is done on time and within budget.

“We operate the most well maintained equipment in Africa as a result of its comprehensive workshop facilities, expertise and systems, and the recent attainment of ISO 9001 accreditation has served to formalise this,” Froneman says.

“This international trade expo, with extensive outside display area, was the perfect opportunity to showcase the company’s range of Hyundai earthmoving equipment and Soosan hydraulic breaker attachments,” says Alex Ackron, managing director, HPE Africa. “We were impressed with the high calibre of visitors to the show this year – largely from mining, quarrying, construction, plant hire and agricultural sectors.

“Through Bauma, HPE Africa is expecting to conclude a number of deals with new customers.

“We also used the platform of Bauma to introduce our new finance solutions that are now in place with Standard Bank Vehicle and Asset Finance. HPE Africa, which is now one of Standard Bank’s

approved suppliers of earthmoving equipment, structures finance deals that give clients a competitive advantage and increased value derived from the bank’s funding structures.”

On display were Hyundai wheeled and tracked excavators, mini excavators, wheel loaders and backhoe loaders – all known for efficient performance, low operating costs and minimal maintenance requirements. The recently launched Hyundai H930s backhoe loader series is supported by a two year/3 000 hour warranty.

Also on the HPE Africa stand were Soosan hydraulic hammers. These attachments, which enhance the flexibility of earthmoving equipment, are designed to withstand harsh operating conditions.

CONSTRUCTION PLAYERS PLAY CRITICAL ROLE IN SOLVING INFRASTRUCTURE PROBLEMS“Infrastructure has become one of the critical expenditure items for South African municipalities,” says Daniel Mazibuko, Moody’s Associate Analyst and author of recently released report, ‘South Africa Metropolitan Municipalities: Borrowing to increase as infrastructure investment needs rise’. The report notes that the country’s eight metropolitan municipalities are planning combined capital expenditure of around R103 billion (US$8.5 billion) in 2015-17, up from R69 billion (US$6 billion) in 2012-14.

“This investment in infrastructure will enable construction companies to play an even greater role in the development of South Africa,” comments Elaine Crewe, CEO of BAUMA CONEXPO AFRICA. “Constructive participation from the private sector is critically important for sustainable infrastructure development and implementation. Those companies who are ready to play there part in solving infrastructure problems in South Africa’s towns and cities will find themselves in a win-win situation.”

Rapid rural-urban migration, as experienced in a number of developing countries including South Africa, can put massive strain on existing infrastructure. In South Africa, heavy investment in municipal infrastructure and services is now critical to ensure that the country’s towns and cities are able to supply adequate municipal services, including social housing for a growing urban population.

The World Economic Forum Global Risks 2015 report noted, “As cities in developing countries are expanding rapidly, it is likely that infrastructure will not be able to keep pace with their growth nor the increased expectations of their populations. Action to close the infrastructure gap is urgently needed and will strongly influence the potential of risks to have catastrophic cascading effects.” Indeed, the same report points to water crises as being the foremost global risk in terms of impact.

According to industry experts, South Africa’s water management infrastructure is already under strain and unable to meet the needs of consumers, big business, and new infrastructure and development projects. “This is as a result of ageing infrastructure, poor maintenance and failure to keep abreast with population growth and technology,” comments Harry

Steyn, GC Dewatering Manager at Xylem Water Solutions South Africa (Pty) Ltd, one of the exhibitors at BAUMA CONEXPO AFRICA 2015.

Last year, Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, told Parliament that capital investment in new water and sanitation infrastructure of around R670 billion was required over the next 10 years. Big business has an important role to play. The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Water Report 2014 noted that over two thirds of Global 500 companies reporting to the CDP last year “faced substantive water risks, therefore investing to conserve, manage or obtain water has become crucial for some sectors.”

“In South Africa, Mining and Construction companies are a big part of the action taking place, as they look to responsibly manage their heavy reliance on water,” comments Crewe. Steyn suggests the introduction of more efficient ways of water treatment to ensure recycling of used water and to reduce water leakages in the process. “Infrastructure maintenance is a critical component to water management to ensure that the correct quality of water is being produced – both in terms of sewage and potable,” he adds.

“These are just some of the important issues that will be addressed by IFAT Environmental Technology Forum Africa, the premiere of which takes place alongside BAUMA CONEXPO AFRICA in September 2015,” says Crewe. IFAT Environmental Technology Forum – Water, Sewage, Refuse and Recycling – Solutions for the Mining and Construction Industry will bring together suppliers and users of innovative solutions and technologies for water, waste water, refuse and recycling.

“BAUMA CONEXPO AFRICA is the premier construction and mining event in Africa and the inclusion of IFAT Environmental Technology Forum Africa will bring an additional element to the trade fair, highlighting the importance of water management in the industry,” concludes Crewe. BAUMA CONEXPO AFRICA takes place from 15-18 September 2015 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre (NASREC).
