Flexible Shaft Power Tools– Three Key Components

Since 1922, Foredom has been manufacturing and advancing its line of flexible shaft power tools. From the start, they have been built to industrial standards and over time the name has become synonymous with quality, reliability, and even the tool style itself. As a result, there are many counterfeit models in the marketplace that are hard to recognize and it is important to buy the genu-ine product from an authorized distributor. Foredom flex shafts hang from the benches of professional jewelers around the world, and are commonly used by machine shop operators, custom fabricators, dental lab technicians, and woodcarvers. It may surprise you to learn that they are also used by leading scientific, engineering, aviation, and other high-tech businesses and institutions. This catalog features various tools that make up the brand, however, the flexible shaft continues to be Foredom's chief product.

A Complete Flexible Shaft Machine consists of: 1- Motor (with shaft and sheath), 2- Speed Control, and 3- Handpiece. Selecting the right combination for your specific application is not always easy since we make several styles of each key compo-nent and many are similar in appearance. If you are new to Foredom, we recommend that you start with a PrePackaged Tool Kit or New Tool Set. The photo below features important ‘Flex Shaft Basics’. More detailed motor, speed control, and handpiece specifi-cations are offered throughout this catalog and on our website.

2. Speed Control Speed Controls vary motor speed from low to high with a foot or manual device. The ability to vary speed is a key advantage of a flex shaft machine over a hand-held grinder. Series SR motors run up to 18,000 RPM, Series TX up to 15,000 RPM, Series LX up to 5,000 RPM, and the PowerGraver up to 2,800 RPM. Foot controls come in both plastic and cast iron housings. Manual (dial) controls are table top models in plastic housings or come integrated in the bases of certain bench style motors.

Series SR motors use our standard controls. Series TX, LX & PGX motors use special controls that convert AC current to DC, the kind required by these motors.

1. Motor Foredom makes 'Universal' motors that have wire wound fields and 'Permanent Magnet' motors with rare earth magnets. Our most popular 'Series SR’ motors are Universal and ideal for 80% of users. A ‘Series’ consists of 3 motors that share the same electrical specs but come in different styles– Hang-Up, Bench, and Bench with Built-in Speed Control. Series SR, Series TX, and Series LX motors have unique performance features. Motors come with Key Tip shafts and sheaths. When equipped with thicker, Square Drive shafting they are called ‘Heavy Duty’ even though the motors are the same. They have the letter ‘H’ added to their part numbers.

3. Handpiece Foredom is known for its extensive selection of interchangeable handpieces that have a quick disconnect feature on the back end for installing onto standard key tip style shafting. Many users are unaware that handpieces can be easily changed. General purpose models are the most popular and come with either a 3-jaw chuck that accommodates different shank size accessories or collets that are shank size specific. There are also several types of interchangeable handpieces for unique applications. It is common for users to own several models of interchangeable hand-pieces. Finally, there are handpieces for use with heavy duty square drive and European slip joint styles of shafting.

Flexible Shaft Motor Features and Specifications– Which motor is right for you?

* Horsepower– Foredom motors are rated at con-tinuous duty or maximum efficiency under load and NOT maximum output. If we adopted the max output rating used by other manufacturers, the SR motor would qualify as 1/5 HP or 1/4 HP, the TX would be considered 1/2 HP, and all of our other motors would have higher horsepower ratings.

++ Square Drive Motors– Square drive shaft-ing is thicker, less flexible and connects to only four, specialized square drive handpieces. When Foredom motors come equipped with square drive shafts and thicker protective sheaths they are considered ‘heavy duty’ and have the letter ‘H’ added to their model

name (Series SRH, Series TXH, etc.). Not many applications warrant square drive shafting that boasts a torsional breaking point of 50 in.-lb as compared with 24 in.-lb for our standard key tip shafting. Many users upgrading from hand-held grinders and other Dremel® type rotary tools make the mistake of selecting a square drive model. Fact is, Foredom motors are built to industrial standards and are already a major step up in power and performance from consumer-type tools.

For users with unusually large or difficult jobs, square drive models can be the ultimate in flexible shaft tools. See our Prepacked Kits featuring square drive models on page 11. Also see pages 14, 16, 17 and 19 for Square Drive motor–speed control combinations.

Our most popular motor has all of the power and speed needed to accomplish most every job without stalling or slowing down while under normal load. Reverse offers many advantages, see pg 13.

K.2231 This kit is perfect for first time jewelers and metalsmiths and will become the cornerstone of any work bench. It has the H.30® chuck style handpiece– the one every jeweler should own since it accepts the widest variety of bur shank sizes and works with other tools such as the Drill Press, Jump Ring Maker, AllSet® , Belt Sander and NEW Foredom Filer. K.2231 has our 1/6 HP reversing motor that offers plenty of power for nearly every task. A double motor hanger comes packed in the box for safe and secure operation. The 43-pc accessory assortment with metal working burs, abrasive points and more makes this kit a great value.

K.2220 If you just have to own a Quick Change handpiece for making frequent changes of 3/32″ shank burs, then this kit is for you. The K.2221 is an even better choice if you need a motor hanger. When you are ready for a second handpiece, we recom-mend that you make it the H.30®.

K.TX300 This kit features our 1/3 HP permanent magnet Series TX motor that delivers more power than the Series SR without sacrificing much speed. If you mainly do stone setting, an LX Kit is an even better choice.

K.2293 If you want to do true engraving without committing to the large investment of an air pow-ered system, then this is the kit for you.

K.2240, K.2250, K.2245 The LX motor in these kits has the most power of any other motor in our line for its speed range of up to 5,000 RPM. It is designed for low speed– high torque work like stone setting, drilling, and milling. The low speed gives you excellent control and won’t bog down under load. Just pick the kit with the handpiece you prefer and if a motor hanger is needed, select that option.

K.5200 This kit upgrades our standard speed control to the cast iron model that offers greater stability on the floor. It also includes the H.28, a second collet handpiece with a slim profile for pencil style handling.

K.5400 This kit is for those of you that want enough power to shape and carve larger pieces. The TX motor will not quit and it comes with our cast iron variable speed foot pedal control for hands-free use and an assortment of burs. K.TXH440 Designed for the heavy duty industrial user, this kit features our 1/3 HP permanent magnet TX motor equipped with square drive shafting. It has the most power of any Foredom motor from medium to high speed– up to 15,000 RPM. The 63″ long square drive shaft and heavy duty protective sheath is less flexible but will handle more torque than our standard 39″ long key tip shafting. The cast iron variable speed foot pedal is tough enough to stand up to the rough environ-ment of a factory floor, garage or barn. The H.44HT handpiece accepts all types of burs with 1/4″, 1/8″ & 3/32″ shanks.

K.SRH440 A great kit for users that need/want everything that comes in the K.TXH440 but are willing to trade off some horsepower for the reversing functionality of the SR motor. This Kit also comes in a 230 Volt version.

FORWARD – Counterclockwise shaft rotation

Understanding motor rotation can be confusing, and at Foredom we define it this way: Forward motor rotation means that the motor is turning an accessory (bur, bit, drill, cutter, etc.) counter-clockwise when holding the handpiece upright in your hand and you are looking down on to the top of the accessory. When the handpiece and accessory are applied to the workpiece, your view-point changes to the back end of the handpiece and the forward rotation direction can be described as clockwise.

Forward is the most commonly used setting.

Right-handed people have the most control running in the forward direction.

Rules for Forward Motor Rotation

* The following handpieces and attachments must be used in Forward Rotation only: H.50 & H.50C Chisel Handpieces, H.15 Hammer Handpiece, Angle Grinder and Foredom Filer attachments. Using these in reverse can damage the handpiece, attachment, flexible shaft, or motor, and may cause personal injury.* Use the forward motor direction only for fluted burs, drills and cutters. Most will cut efficiently only when turning in this direction.* Many mandrels have right-hand threaded arbor screws which will unscrew in the reverse direction.

Series SR Motors– Understanding Forward & Reverse Rotation

* Dust and debris flies away from the user when operated in forward in the left hand.* Whether you are right or left handed or operate in forward or reverse, eye and dust protection should always be used.* Always securely tighten chuck nut or chuck jaws of your hand-piece with a wrench or chuck key so that it will not come loose in the reverse or forward operating directions.

REVERSE – Clockwise shaft rotation

Advantages of Reverse Rotation

* Left-handed users will have better control of the accessory in the reverse direction.* For right handed use, dust and debris flies away in reverse.* Alternating motor direction helps to extend the life of mounted abrasive points, brushes, sanding bands, and Typhoon® burs.* Reverse helps with accomplishing symmetrical grinding and carving techniques.* Reverse is good for “backing out” stuck drill bits. * Alternating motor direction makes it easier and faster to polish metals.* Be sure to use a mandrel with a left-hand threaded arbor screw when running in reverse. Standard 'Key Tip'

M.SRH, M.SRMH & M.SRBH are the same motors as the Series SR above, but come with heavy duty protec-tive sheaths and 63″ long square drive shafts (not key tip). The letter ‘H’ is added to their model names to indicate the heavy duty shafting.

Square drive flex shafts are the ulti-mate power tools for deburring, buffing, grinding, polishing, & metal finishing. They are ideal for large scale woodcarving and sculpting jobs with carbide or steel burs and larger mounted grinding stones.

Heavy duty shafting is thicker and stronger but less flexible than the standard type. It connects ONLY to our ‘square drive’ handpieces– H.28H, H.25H, H.30H, and H.44HT, see page 24.

DO NOT plug your flex shaft motor directly into an electrical outlet. The motor’s power cord should be connected to the speed control, which in turn plugs into an outlet. The C.FCT, C.SCT & C.EM have 2 cords coming off the back. The 15″ shorter cord accepts the motor plug, and the longer 6′ cord connects to a power out-let. When using the On/Off Foot Switch, shown below, it goes in between your power source and speed control.

M.SR Hang-Up Style

Series TX have permanent magnet DC motors that feature the latest in flex shaft technology. These ball bearing models utilize advanced rare earth magnets (in place of wire wound fields in our universal type SR motors) that deliver excellent field strength throughout the speed range of 500 to 15,000 RPM. (Series LX motors have the most power from start up to 5,000 RPM). TX motors offer great control of the cutting tool, drill, or bur under load.

M.TX, M.TXM, and M.TXB motors come with standard 39″ long key tip shafting (shaft and sheath) for connecting to Foredom’s ‘inter-changeable’ handpieces, pages 20-23.

Our permanent magnet motors require the use of a C.TXR, C.SXR, or C.EMX speed control. Damage will result if the motor is connected to any other control or directly to the AC line. See note on page 18.

Different length shafting, including non-conductive options, are available but do not come installed on your motor, see page 26.

M.SR Hang-Up Style

Permanent magnet Series LX motors work with the same speed controls as the Series TX, see page 18. They are our MOST powerful motors from start up to max speed of 5,000 RPM (even more than the Series TX at those speeds). Series LX motors offer the added power needed for low speed jobs like stone setting, wax modeling, and drilling. Series LX and LXH are available in both 115 and 230 Volt.

Ball bearing M.LX, M.LXM and M.LXB motors are ideal for use with our drill press, see page 25. They are well matched with our Hammer and Chisel Handpieces H.15, H.15D and H.50 and H.50C.

General Purpose


What is an Interchangeable Handpiece?Foredom’s Quick Disconnect or ‘QD’ feature makes it fast and easy to change handpieces on any flexible shaft machine equipped with Key Tip style shafting. That includes all of our machines (SRH, TXH, etc.) except for those with Square Drive and Slip Joint shafting. QD refers to the back portion of Foredom’s interchangeable handpiec-es. Inside the QD is a round connector with a keyway slot that accepts the key tip on the end of the shaft. Since all interchangeable handpieces have the same QD, they

can be easily attached or removed. The surest way to attach a handpiece is to push it onto the shafting while the motor is running very slowly. The key tip on the end of the shaft will find

its way into the keyway slot. To remove, simply pull the handpiece off the sheath with a firm grip. Foredom’s General Pur-pose, Quick Change, Special Use, Duplex Spring, and Chisel Handpieces are all ‘In-terchangeable’. Many users own several

types of interchangeable handpieces which increases the versatility of their Foredom flex shaft machine.

H.30® is Foredom’s most popular handpiece. It features a geared 3-jaw #0 chuck that accepts any size shank accessory or drill bit up to 5⁄32″ (4mm) in diameter. Comes with the HPCK-0 chuck key with molded plastic handle. Quick Change– Interchangeable Handpieces for Use with ONLY 2.35mm (3/32″) Burs, except for H.10- see below

Quick Change Handpieces accommodate ONLY 2.35mm (or 3/32″) shank size accessories that get seated in the handpiece’s 2.35mm collet. They allow you to change out burs, bits, cutters, drills, etc. without the use of a chuck key or pin and wrench. We offer push/pull, push lever, and rotating lever style bur release mechanisms. Selection is a matter of personal preference, as all save time for stone setters and others making frequent bur changes. It is important to ALWAYS store a bur in the collet of a Quick Change handpiece even when not in use. Quick Change handpieces have pre-lubricated ball bearings that do not require any additional lubrication.

The spring that connects the two separated ends of a handpiece and the letter 'D' that we add to their part numbers are all that distinguish the 6 Duplex Spring Handpieces, at right, from standard models. The duplex spring component requires periodic lubrication with MS10005 Handpiece Lube, see page 28.Duplex Springs provide extra flexibility to a handpiece when more precise control for delicate work is required. The spring drive is made of special steel, double wound, tubular construction with a protective flexible spring cover. Foredom’s Chisel Handpiece gives a power assist to carving in all types of wood, plastic, plaster and soft carving stone. The H.50 is a reciprocat-ing ‘hammer’ type handpiece that requires a light pressure to engage the hammering chisel action. It has a stroke depth of 1/8″ (3.2mm). H.50 attaches to a Foredom or other flex shaft with a standard key tip shaft. Shaped like the popular H.44T, it has a unique, rugged textured plastic barrel and tapered aluminum front end. TIP: We recommend using this handpiece with Series TX and LX or 1/6 HP Series SR motors in forward rotation only. For optimum performance use between 1,000 – 8,000 RPM. Square Drive Handpieces are for use with Series SRH, TXH and LXH motors (Pages 14, 16 & 17) with heavy duty square drive shafts. They cannot be used with standard key tip style shafting that comes on most Foredom machines. H.25H, H.30H, and H.44HT have positive sheath locking mechanisms (locking rings). H.28H attaches without a locking ring.

Soff JawsTM

Foredom drill presses securely hold a handpiece in a vertical position for drilling straight, accurate holes to specified depths. They are ideal for modeling, spot-facing, countersinking and reaming in wood, wax, plastic, metal, glass and gemstone.

High-speed steel, cobalt and diamond drills are most commonly used for drilling. Whatever accessory you use, let the speed of the tool do the work. Too much feed pressure can damage or break your drill and may cause loss of control. Twist drills are often used for drilling holes in metals, woods, and plastics. On work items with rounded surfaces such as rods, it is a good idea to centerpunch a starting hole to keep the tip of the drill from “walking” or wandering from the desired starting point. When drilling, lift the drill up and down frequently to clear away dust and other debris.

Compact Control Box has a precision heat control dial for setting and maintaining temperatures from 95ºF (35ºC) up to 560ºF (294ºC). Keep it low for delicate work or turn it up for fast wax removal or carving harder waxes. A flashing light shows heat intensity and indicates if the tool is unintentionally left on. Only 2-1⁄2″ x 2″ (64 x 51mm). It hardly takes up any work bench space. It can also be wall mounted with a piece of velcro, as the jeweler did in the photo at left. Cords are removable for easy storage when not in use.

Lightweight Handpiece has cork insulation to keep fingertips cool while working. Extremely flexible, detachable handpiece cord is perfect for the controlled movements needed for fine detailing in wax.

Brass Tips are easy to clean and change, they’re a great improvement over the tips used on other models. You can alter the tips with a file or pliers and create your own custom shapes. Kit K.WC-1 comes with 3 tips indicated with an asterisk*. Kit K.WC-3 comes with all 7 tips. Tips also come separately.

FOREDOM Filer– This reciprocating tool (not rotary) attaches over the top of Foredom's H.30® Handpieces (H.30, H.30H and H.30SJ). Partnered with our flex shaft machine and handpiece, it offers a power assist to tiresome hand filing opera-tions and can be used to file, hone, polish and lap on straight and curved surfaces. The quality constructed aluminum attachment has a pistol grip for ergonomic, easy handling. It comes prelubricated and never requires any additional lubrication.Holds tools with different shank sizes from 2.35mm (3/32″) to 6.4mm (1/4″).The Filer has a 2.5 : 1 motor gear reduction.

Stroke Length: Stroke length can be adjusted from 0mm up to 5mm.

Operating Recommendations: The Filer can run at a Maximum Input Motor Speed of 10,000 RPM which is the equivalent Output of 4,000 Strokes Per Minute. Maintaining a consistent speed of operation is critical for good results. The best and easiest way to achieve that is to use a dial speed control rather than a foot pedal. Our new MAMH-13 double motor hanger with screw-in base mount and spring safety clips is the central compo-nent of the system. Foredom's clamp mount MAMH-1 and base mount MAMH-2 feature a 3-pc hexagonal support rod and top safety hook rod for holding one or two motors. Both models include the MAHR-2 Handpiece Rest and 2 UA10658 Spring Safety Clips. Assembly is simple with the supplied couplings and set screws. When properly assembled, it is as strong as any of the solid rod models we previously offered. Flexade Attachment converts a lathe, drill press or electric drill into a flex shaft machine. It is ideal for use with the M.BL which runs up to 7,000 RPM. Since the flexade can only run in forward, it needs to be mounted on the right side of the bench lathe as you face it. For best performance, motor speed should operate at 3,500 RPM or higher. Any 'QD' style interchange-able handpiece can be attached (pages 20-23). The 34″ long Flexade has a motor coupling and a standard sheath. Replacement parts are on page 26.

A 5/16″ Coupling comes sup-plied if not otherwise specified which is the size needed for current models of Foredom’s M.BL Lathes (2005 and later):Coupling Standard Sheath 5/16″ S.B0-516 $35 Foredom’s Belt Sander Attachment for H.30® Handpiece (AK797210, pg. 31), is perfect for use with a Flexade and BL Lathe since it operates best between 500– 4,000 rpm.
