INDIA’S TO GROW AT 7.3% IN 2018; TO BECOME FIFTH LARGEST

ECONOMYWith an "ambitious government undertakingcomprehensive reforms", India has "enormous growth potential" compared to other emerging economies, the World Bank said on 10 January 2018, as it projected country's growth rate to 7.3 percent in 2018 and 7.5 for the next two years. India, despite initial setbacks from demonetisation and Goods and Services Tax (GST), is estimated to have grown at 6.7 percent in 2017, according to the 2018 Global Economics Prospect released by the World Bank in Washington. As a result of high growth rate, the Indian economy would  become the world's fifth largest by 2018 overtaking the global economic powerhouses like the UK and France, says the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) consultancy's 2018 World Economic League Table.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the 9 million tonne refinery and petrochemical complex on 16 January 2018. The US$ 6.6 billion refinery will be completed in 4 years and will provide direct employment to 1000 persons and create indirect employment opportunities for another 40,000.

INDIA TESTS 'STAR WARS' MISSILE DEFENSE SYSTEM

India tested an advanced anti-missile system designed as part of a two-tier defense against incoming threats on 28 December 2017. India successfully intercepted one of its own Prithvi short-range ballistic missiles, launched from a test range in Chandipur, with a second missile fired from Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of the eastern state of Orissa by the country’s supersonic advanced air defense system. The test was the third to be conducted this year and the first since India. India became the fourth country in the world—after the U.S., Russia and Israel—to develop a ballistic missile defense system back in 2007. (Source: Newsweek)

PRIME MINISTER INAUGURATES INDIA’S FIRST UNMANNED METRO TRAIN

The Magenta Line, India’s first unmanned metro line plying between Botanical Garden station in Noida to south Delhi's Kalkaji Mandir station, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 December 2017. The Delhi Metro has been credited with bringing about significant improvement in traffic congestion, reducing the number of accidents, reducing pollution, and saving commuters’ time. The first metro service in India commenced operations in Kolkata in 1984. Over the last 33 years, a rail network of 370-km has been established in nine cities. The latest additions to India’s ever-expanding metro rail network include metros in Lucknow, Hyderabad, and Kochi. At present ten cities in India have metro rail connectivity – Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Jaipur, Kochi, Lucknow and Hyderabad. Around 537 km of metro tracks are currently under construction. Commuters in cities including Pune, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Vijayawada, Kozhikode and Indore have been promised metro rail soon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Botanical Garden-Kalkaji Magenta Line of Delhi Metro. The 12.64-km route will be the first one of Delhi Metro to get driverless trains. DMRC will be using Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling technology in these trains, which would facilitate the movement of trains within a frequency of 90 to 100 seconds. Savory Summer Squash Muffins (Dhoodhi Handvo)

• 3½ cups packed shredded zucchini (about 1 pound) • 1 cup low-fat plain yogurt • 1 tablespoon sugar • ¾ cup water • ½ teaspoon cumin seeds • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat 12 ( ½-cup) muffin cups with cooking spray. 2. Mix flour, 2½ tablespoons oil, salt, baking soda and turmeric in a medium bowl. 3. Combine garlic and ginger in a large bowl; press with a spoon to make a paste. Add zucchini, yogurt and sugar; stir until well combined. Add the dry ingredients and stir to combine. Add water and stir to combine again. 4. Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin tin, filling each cup until almost flush with the top. Level the batter. 5. Heat the remaining 1½ tablespoons oil in a small skillet over medium-high heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds; cook, stirring, until very fragrant, about 45 seconds, being careful not to burn them. Remove from heat. Spoon a scant ½ teaspoon of the seasoned oil on top of each muffin, then sprinkle with sesame seeds. 6. Bake for 20 minutes. Leaving the pan in the center of the oven, switch the oven to broil, and broil the muffins until the tops are browned, 7 to 10 minutes more. 7. Let cool in the pan for 20 minutes before removing. Rashtrapati Bhavan (President’s Residence) in New Delhi.

JANTAR MANTAR Jantar Mantar (Yantra - instruments, mantra - formulae) was constrcted in 1724. Maharaja Jai Singh of Jaipur who built this observatory went on to build other observatories in Ujjain, Varanasi and Mathura. Jai Singh had found the existing astronomical instruments too small to take correct measurements and so he built these larger and more accurate instruments. The instruments at Jantar Mantar are fascinating for their ingenuity, but accurate observations can no longer be madefrom here because of the tall buildings around.

Delhi has large number of places of tourist interest. Last week we published some of them. Wepresent few more in this edition.
