Balamma Satram at Holy Family Home for the Needy - Sharing Our Love India is a vast country – the UK can fit into it 12 times
National language is Hindi, but each state has its own language
Balamma Satram is situated in the Kadapa region of Andhra Pradesh in the South East of India
Telegu is the language spoken in the State of Andhra Pradesh
70% of people in Kadapa do not have sufficient food to eat
Some do not have drinking water and have to walk some distanceto get water
In the cities, animals roam among the people, but in the villages the animals live with the people
In the cities and towns they have open sewers outside their homes. In the villages there are no toilets and people use fields and roadsides
LIVING FOR A CAUSE- DOING SOMETHING MEANINGFUL
When we live for a cause, serving humanity, especially those living without the basic facilities, we experience true happiness and our own lives become truly fulfilled. Balamma Satram Holy Family Home for the Needy offers a home to the most needy people whose lives are transformed by living there. The sick are offered medical aid, the elderly are given a purpose in life and the will to live. Children are given excellent education and young teenage girls are taught how to sew and make a living for themselves and their families.

Balamma Satram at Holy Family Home for the Needy - Sharing Our LoveDesperate Conditions in Surrounding VillagesThese are the desperate conditions where families have to live after their homes have been destoyed to make way for new roads. The well on the left has dried up and so people have only the bare minimum of clean water. The water in the picture top left is all open sewerage.

The home of a poor family
These are the living conditions of a poor family living in the rural areas of the Kadapa district. All the family live in the one room, there is no furniture and cooking is done on an open fire.

her use
Since the year 2000, there has been very little rain. Most people live from day to day, water is a luxuary, something we take for granted here in the western world. Disease is rife because of the open sewers.

washing, cooking and
drinking No water for man or animals
In most rural villages there is a hand pump for water but many times it does not work because of all the dust and so many people resort to using water from the sewers!

How we supplied clean, drinking water at Balamma Satram
The water is used for crops for the village
Water tank under construction to hold 80,000 litres of fresh water View of completed tank

Solar panels used to heat the waterShower block and wash
areaWestern toilet facilities
In 2004 when the project began there was no water supply. Over the years we have sunk 4 bore wells, each 465 feet deep into the ground. Water is pumped up into the overhead tank which was built, this holds 80,000 litres of water. The water is then pumped back into all the houses. Hot water is also available from the installation of solar panels.
