Overview:Studentswillexplorethemovementofthecoloniestowardsself-governmentbyexaminingthechoicesmadebytheSecondContinentalCongress,notinghowAmericandelegateswereinfluencedbyphilosopherssuchasJohnLocke.StudentswillparticipateinanactivityinwhichtheyassumetheroleofaCongressionalmemberintheyear1775anddeviseaplanforAmericaaftertheonsetofwar.ThislessoncanoptionallyendwithaSocraticSeminarortranslationactivityontheDeclarationofIndependence.

¢ TheCongressalsodeterminedthataSecondContinentalCongresswouldconveneiftheirpetitionwasunsuccessfulinhaltingenforcementoftheIntolerableActs.
