Improving your power Factor can reduce operating costs by eliminating or deferring the need for new equipment, help existing equipment last longer and make future expansion less costly. Also lower rating sized equipment can be used, saving unnecessary capital expense. All this is in addition to a quick return on installing capacitor systems to improve power factor. From the Electricity utility point of view, raising the average operating power factor of entire grid network from 0.90 to 0.99 means,

-Reduced costs from inefficiencies in the network.-Increased generation and distribution potential-Lower demand on the grid

This means the utility can save hundreds of tons of fuel (and produce fewer emission), have more transformers available and reduce the likelihood of building new power plants and their support systems. For this reason many electricity utility companies pass a power factor incentive to consumer so transformers available and reduce the likelihood of building new power plants and their support systems. For this reason many electricity utility companies pass a power factor incentive to consumer so that they can save the additional cost required to support efficient system

In connection with reactive power compensation, power quality should also be considered. Harmonic filtering reduces the risk of technical faults and disturbances. Voltage distortions resulting from harmonic currents are caused by inverters, DC drives, fluorescent lighting, converters, UPS, arc furnaces, etc. In practice harmonic filtering brings a number of bonuses:Disturbances in telecommunications and data transmission are minimized.Electronics, control systems, converters, motors and generators operate without interruption. No risk of overloading cables, nuisance tripping of relays or fusesPoor quality may remain unnoticed for a long time. Quality deficiency may easily bring extra costs in the form of high electricity bills and an oversized power system.

Recommendations and results over observations during study

Sr.No. Nature of Problem Observations during study Recommendation Results

1

Furnace & Rolling Mill were not running simultaneously resulting in production loss.

Presence of Higher order Harmonics

Installation of Tuned Harmonic Filter bank on HT side to suppress higher order Harmonics generated due to Furnace load

After implementation of recommended schemes % of Harmonic in network is reduced as IEEE 519-1992

2

Failure of Electronic Meter, Indicators, UPS system & Drive Cards

Existing scheme of LT capacitors on LT bus are inadequately designed

Installation of Fast acting (RTPFC) Tuned filter bank to be connected on Transformer having fluctuating load

Furnace & Rolling mill running simultaneously at Full load conditions satisfactory on continuous basis resulting in enhancing production

3

High Energy charges & poor load factor

Varying Harmonic spectrum & fluctuating load exerts dangerous overload on network & affect life of connected

Installation of capacitor filter (Tuned) panel for Power Factor improvement & Harmonic Suppression

No failure of Electronic meters, Indicators, UPS, Drive cards

& affect life of connected switchgears & cables

Harmonic Suppression

4

Poor Power Factor & High KVA demand

Voltage sensitive equipments & electronic card failure caused due to resonance effect & Harmonic amplification

Centralized Power Factor sensing for entire 33 KV bus (Furnace + Rolling mill) by optimizing Reactive power & harmonic control

Low Energy charges & Improved load factor

5

Bad quality of power due to high level of Current & Voltage harmonics generated due to 25 Tonne, 12 pulse Induction Furnace

This Harmonic amplification may lead to premature failure of DC drives, motors along with Transformers

Power Factor improved to 0.997 & above upto unity & optimized Demand

6

overall Power factor is low Improved quality of Power by reduction in Harmonics & improved power Factor

7

All system supplied by Claritas are running giving desired result
