• It is a CASE tool used for designing different models• It stores data about data

Four D’s of data• The meta data is used for:• Discover – What is known about data• Document – define data models• Design/describe – may use for data movements and data

descriptions• Do – finally creates the real artifacts from the model

Useful for• Data Modeling• Information Architecture• Enterprise Architecture

Structured as• A global generator

Why not use any drawing tool• Drawing tools communicate ideas visually and may also

capture some additional information about some of the objects represented

• Each diagram stands alone: If any process appears at various places, there is no connection between those symbols and there is no linkages or connection with the actual existence of these processes

• i.e. there is no way of managing metadata

Power Designer Components• There are various components:• Models• Diagrams• Objects• Sub-Objects• Links• Examples etc.

Symbols• The symbols are actually the objects• The links between the objects are also the symbols• For some things, there are no symbols, may not be used

Data Modelling• Sybase is used for defining CDM (Conceptual Data Model)• The CDM is independent of any underlined database• All the design issues of the data are defined here

• Through the simple procedures, the CDM may be transformed into PDM (Physical Data Model)

Create CDM• Steps are:• Start PowerDesigner• Use the tools from the tool palette• Define entities and relationships• Save it as .CDM

• DO NOT DEFINE THE FOREIGN KEYS IN THE TABLES

• From CDM, logical data model may be created
