Safety at its Finest: An In-Depth Look at the Investigation Process

Safety is the number one common thread across all segments of the commercial marine industry. The National Transportation Safety Board will highlight the importance of thorough and unbiased investigations, the authorities and methods by which those federal investigations are conducted,

and the resulting takeaways from these investigations. Listen in as NTSB reveals the investigation details of the El Faro tragedy, how investigators solved the mystery of the sinking, and the final report’s findings and recommendations that resulted from that investigation.

Speaker: Brian Curtis, Director, Office of Marine Safety, National Transportation Safety Board

Significant Boats of 2018: Sneak Peek Interview

Each year, WorkBoat unveils the Top 10 Significant Boats that appeared in the previous 12 months of the magazine. Selections are based on several criteria including innovation, technology, efficiency, and the uniqueness of the design. The owners, designers and builders of the vessels are invited to an exclusive award

ceremony that takes place at the International WorkBoat Show. For the first time, WorkBoat will host a sneak peek session with a few of the designers, builders and owners of the nominated top 10 vessels. These nominees will discuss their vessels and what was involved in the building process. At this session, attendees can ask questions about the vessels and improve their knowledge on what goes into the design, construction and operation of 2018’s most Significant Boats.

Introducing the WorkBoat Think Tank

The WorkBoat Think Tank is a brand new at-show collaboration moderated by the editors of WorkBoat Magazine and WorkBoat.com. This free program will feature thoughtful and interactive discussions that will allow the audience to get up close and personal with industry thought leaders. Let your voice be heard by taking part in open forum discussions about hot button topics like safety, artificial intelligence, innovation and more. Think Tank admission is included in your Expo pass – check a few of this year’s sessions below!

2018 INTERNATIONAL WORKBOAT SHOW

Subchapter M has Arrived. Now What?

The industry is well aware of the requirements of Subchapter M and obtaining certificates of inspections (COI). As of June 25, the Coast Guard had issued 22 certificates of inspections (COI) to towing vessels in the Atlantic and Pacific Regions alone. This session will describe the requirements for obtaining a COI, examine the inspector checklists before, during and after inspection, and uncover the lessons learned from the initial COIs.

Speaker: Chris Parsonage, President, Towing Vessel Inspection Bureau

A strong economy and the booming ferry and inland overnight cruise markets have helped boost passenger vessel industry growth and stability. This sector is seeing new designs, green technologies including hybrid and electric, improved fleet management and other technologies. In the inland waterways sector, increased freight opportunities from U.S. chemical manufacturers and the improving economy should bring additional opportunities for barge companies while continuing to reduce the oversupply of equipment. Infrastructure improvements are needed as commercial and recreational transportation crowd the rivers. This program will address the strategic concepts in maintaining what is working and reversing what is not along the inland waterways and discuss what’s on the horizon.

Tugs & Coastal TowingHalf day program – $250 (includes lunch)

Wednesday, November 28th / 10:00am – 2:00pmModernization of tug, tow, and coastal barge fleets will be examined. This program is designed to deliver a comprehensive overview of fleet design and market trends. From new Z-drives on the Mississippi River to Tier 4 diesels and even hybrid propulsion, tug and towboat designers and builders are putting out innovative solutions for the industry.

Offshore Program Half day program – $250 (includes lunch)

Thursday, November 29th / 10:00am – 2:00pmIn recent years, the offshore industry has had its challenges. However, government energy officials and oil companies remain optimistic that offshore reserves will be needed in the future. With emerging technology trends and the growth of offshore renewable energy sources, more opportunity lies ahead. This program will identify the key components to sustaining the offshore sector now and into the future.

Shipyard Program Half day program – $250 (includes happy hour)

Thursday, November 29th / 1:00pm – 5:00pm

Shipyards are an integral part of the commercial marine industry. Shipyards are continually seeking innovative techniques to increase efficiency, safety and profitability. From design and construction trends to technological advancements and regulatory compliance, the importance of relevant, up-to-date information is crucial in today’s competitive environment — one characterized by more shipyards chasing fewer contracts. Hear what’s working and what’s not. This program will provide an in-depth look at the significance and importance of the shipyard industry.

Annual ConferenceThis year’s WorkBoat Annual Conference will be broken out across two days and will focus on five sectors: “Maintenance & Repair”, “Tugs & Coastal Towing”, “Shipyards”, “Inland Waterways & Passenger Vessel” and “Offshore”. Each program is custom designed to provide high level education and networking opportunities in a comprehensive format. The cornerstone of the program will be intensive half-day sessions that will allow the participants to dive deeper into the challenges and opportunities facing commercial mariners today.
