POWDER METALLURGY (PM) is an art and science of producing fine metal powders and then making objects from individual, mixed or alloyed metal powders with or without the inclusion of non-metallic constituents.

It involves forming metal parts by heating compacted metal powders, either concurrently or subsequently, for a period of time at a temperature below the melting point of the major constituent.

Essential for uniformity of the finished product.

Over-mixing may decrease particle size and work harden the particles.

COMPACTING

• Pressing the powders into their semi-finished form preparatory to sintering.Meaning

• To consolidate the powder as closely as possible to final dimensions.

• To provide the desired shape.Purpose

• The desired level and type of porosity.• Adequate strength for handling. Imparts

Also known as ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING.

Objects are made from 3D model data by joining materials layer upon layer.

It is the fabrication of objects through the deposition of a material using a print head, nozzle or another printer technology.

APPLICATIONS OF PM• 3D Printing applications• Porous products, e.g.,

bearings and filters.• Refractory products, e.g.,

parts used in electric bulbs, radio valves, oscillator valves, etc.

• Automotive components like crankshaft drive, piston rings, etc.

• Used in clocks and timing devices, typewriters, calculators, permanent magnets, etc.

• Military and defence systems• Atomic energy applications.• Complex shapes requiring

excessive machining by other processes, e.g., gears.

• Products made from materials very difficult to machine, e.g., tungsten carbide, etc.

IN CONCLUSION 3D Printing is an expanding technology in which

everyone has the possibility of being a manufacturer.

The potential of powder metallurgy and 3D printing is only limited by one’s imagination.

Large areas of research are still open for the future development of PM and 3D Printing.

Research in PM should be encouraged with a goal of realizing a sustainable society.
