Amaya Holliday 9/9/15 POW Write up: I began by knowing that it had to be a multiple of seven and 2,3,4,5,6 wouldn’t multiply into it. I started by multiplying 7 by 7 and I got 49. I thought that this was the right answer, but Acacia and Brigid, my partners, reminded it had to have a remainder of one. After that I realized that it had to be an odd number because that would mean any number multiplied evenly into it would have a one left over. Then I started multiplying 7 by odd numbers using my calculator. When the answered appeared on the calculator screen I would ask myself is the answer odd and does 2,3,4,5,6 multiply evenly into it. Eventually I got 7 times 43 and I got 301. I realized that this followed the rules of the problem. This was my first answer. Eventually I decided to multiply 7 times 7 times 7 times 7 and I got 2401. That would work because it was odd and wasn’t a multiple of 2,3,4,5,6. Solution: My solution is 301. My solution is correct because if 2,3,4,5,6 multiply in it they all have a remainder of 1. Justification: 7*43=301 This is an odd number It isn’t even so 2 and 4 don’t multiply evenly in it The answer’s sum doesn’t add up to a multiple of 3 or 6 The answer doesn’t end in 0 or 5 so 5 can’t multiple into it evenly Extension: Sally goes to the store and buys a bunch of backpacks she then trips over a turtle and all the backpack fall in a puddle of acid. She fortunately bought a warranty and went back to the store the cashier ask how many backpacks Sally bought and she said she didn’t know but they were in groups of 5 with one left over. What are the possible numbers of backpacks she bought. Evaluation: I really enjoyed this problem because it was unique and it was like a brain teaser. I thought the ability level was perfect because it was just hard enough to give me a little mental sweat. I learned from this how to make a word problem less intimidating.

Justification:  7*43=301

● This is an odd number ● It isn’t even so 2 and 4 don’t multiply evenly in it ● The answer’s sum doesn’t add up to a multiple of 3 or 6 ● The answer doesn’t end in 0 or 5 so 5 can’t multiple into it evenly
