Budget Approval Meeting

30 September at 16:00 in the Pavilion

The proposed school and hostel budgets for 2014 will be presented to parents by the SGB Finance Committee on the day on which boarders return for the fourth term. This is your opportunity to raise your concerns to the Governing Body. It is imperative that all day girl and boarder parents attend this

meeting. Attached is the Proposed Budget for 2014. All parents are asked to be in the Pavilion at 16:00. Please

attend the meeting which is scheduled for your convenience on a day that you will be in Potchefstroom. The detailed budget will be available for your perusal from 16 September at the finance office of the school during working hours. The Finance office will be closed between 16:00 and17:00 for the meeting. No one will be assisted during this time.

Derby Day

Thank you to all the parents who attended Derby day. It was a fantastic day! The girls showed good sportsmanship and enthusiastically supported their Houses. The weather was great and the parents who attended had wonderful bonding time with their daughters. Thank you to the parent forum … for the Girls for the arrangements for the big walk. The walk was lovely and enjoyed by everyone.

Reports

Every learner has received her 3rd

term report. Please keep in mind that the marks achieved this term is for the term’s work and tests written. We did not have an exam therefore the marks should be higher than the 2

nd term’s marks.

Donations – Pavilion Bricks

Parents who wish to make a donation to the school can also do so by buying a brick. I would like to encourage parents to make a donation, especially the grade 12s & other girls leaving the school, and if your daughter has had a good year.

The minimum cost of a brick is R600-00. However we are always willing to accept bigger donations than this. Your name and that of your daughter/s will be engraved on a brass plaque (cost R70-00) that will be mounted on a brick in the Pavilion. A special wall in the Pavilion has been set aside for this purpose. Please complete the reply slip if you are interested. All donations can be made directly to the finance office for the attention of Mrs Jacobsz.

October National Teachers’ Week

The first week of Term 4 is National Teachers’ Week. If you would like to express your gratitude to our wonderful teachers please do so by sending e-mails or letters of appreciation.

School Magazine The 2013 Magazine “The Pearl”, with lovely articles and

photos capturing the school year of 2013 will be available at end of November. The cost of the magazine is R150.00. Please complete the reply slip to order your magazine. Photo Day

Photos for the magazine will be taken on 10 & 16 October. Learners who have participated in various events this year must ensure that they bring all the appropriate uniform for that day.

Prize Giving: 4 October

You are cordially invited to our Annual Prize giving on 4 October at 17:15. This function takes place at the University’s Sanlam Auditorium so that all parents and all

the girls can attend. Attendance at our Prize giving is compulsory for all learners.

A slide series of all photos taken throughout the year will be shown from 17:25 so if you arrive early you will find the

photos entertaining while you wait.

However everyone must be seated by 17:15.

The Prize giving starts promptly at 17:30. Please no late

comers. Our Prize giving is the highlight of our year. This is also a formal function and we do not condone any shouting or whistling or any other form of applauding other than the clapping of hands. Parents may take their own daughters home after the function.

The route to the Sanlam Auditorium is as follows: Heading in a northerly direction from the school, drive straight down Beyers Naude Street which becomes Hoffmann Street towards the university. Enter the NW University gates and the Sanlam Auditorium will be on your left hand side.

After the function all parents, LEC members and grade 11 &

12 prizewinners are invited to tea & refreshments in the School Hall. All the other learners and children will be catered for outside the hall and at the hostels.

What does an award for deportment mean?

Ideally: Deportment is when a girl has the grace and finesse expected of lady. She has good posture, speaks eloquently, at a reasonable volume, and is not foul-mouthed, rude nor angry.

Her appearance is that of pride. Neat, clean and in accordance to what is expected. She is alert, positive, friendly, self-confident and honest.

Knitting 2014

We would like to start a new tradition at Girls High. On a Wednesday we play music during break and we would like the girls to bring their knitting to school on Wednesdays and sit at break knitting while listening to music. The challenge is to start the knitting of strips for 2014 next term. So I am appealing to all girls to bring their wool and needles and let’s start knitting!

LEC PARENT INVITATION: A special Induction Function for the newly-elected LEC will take place on Sunday 20 October 2013 at 15:00 in the Pavilion. This function is

however only for parents of the newly elected LEC members and no other children or family members can be accommodated. Please RSVP to Mrs Grater (018) 294 3228 by 11 October.

Weekends Home

A boarding school is a home away from home but it is not meant to be HOME. Girls MUST go home at least every 3

rd

weekend to bond with their own families. It is not ideal to

keep your daughter in the hostel every weekend, neither is it ideal to allow her to keep visiting friends. The girls are with their friends all week and need a break. Please, please parents take your daughter home. She needs to see you!

Re-Admissions for Day girls & Boarders 2014

This is for Day girls as well as Boarders.

If your daughter is returning to school and / or hostel she must complete a re-admission form to book her place at school for 2014. If she is a boarder she must also apply for re-admission to the hostel to book her bed in hostel. If no form is received by Monday 1 October 2013 your daughter’s place will be

allocated to a new learner.

If an application for re-admission is made for the hostel a deposit must also be paid. The deposit paid last year can stand over as the deposit for 2014. Ideally, don’t deduct the

deposit from your fourth term boarding fees so that it remains as her annual deposit until your daughter leaves Girls High. Please inform the school if your daughter is leaving. I would

appreciate your co-operation in informing me immediately should your daughter not be returning to the school and / or hostel as it will assist in our planning for next year. The re-admission forms must be handed into Admin Office. Arrangement for Boarders Return

Borders return on Monday 30 September 2013 in full

uniform.

Offices and hostels will be open from 13:00 – 16:00 and 17:00 -18:00. No learners will be admitted to hostel without payment. NO late arrivals will be allowed but please don’t arrive earlier than 13:00.

Please parents don’t make it difficult for you and for us! Bad behaviour and rudeness is not the solution! Parents will have to take their daughters home and return them the next day if they are late. This also applies to girls arriving by taxi after the hostel has closed. There is no bus service on this day.
