What Are My Postsecondary Options?
Technology Centers — They prepare you for specific professions. They combine the academic curriculum with real-life hands-on applications. Technology centers are usually smaller than colleges and cheaper. You can earn certificates and licenses.
Two-Year Community/Junior Colleges — They offer a variety of two-year degreeprograms. Community and junior colleges are usually smaller and less expensive than four-year colleges and universities. You can earn certificates, licenses and associate degrees.
Four-Year Colleges/Universities — They offer a multitude of degree programs. Class sizes are usually large. You can earn bachelor’s, master’s and professional degrees.
Will I still have an IEP in postsecondary education? When you are in high school, you may receive services under a law called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act, which provides a free, appropriate public education for students with disabilities. IDEIA does not cover postsecondary education, so you will not have an IEP in postsecondary. Postsecondary institutions provide disability services in compliance with Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act.
How do I get accommodations and modifications in postsecondary schools? To get reasonable accommodations in postsecondary schools, you will need to disclose your disability and request accommodations. Accommodations do not alter what you are expected to learn. An accommodation makes learning accessible to you and allows you to demonstrate what you know. Modifications are seldom permitted in postsecondary because they may fundamentally alter or lower the standard of the course. You will need to provide documentation of your disability. Here are some steps to keep in mind when requesting accommodations. • Contact the coordinator of disability services. You must contact the person in charge of accommodations and notify that person that you have a disability. • Ask about disability documentation requirements. When you meet with the person in charge of accommodations, you should ask what documents are required. Each institution has its own requirements for how current and what documentation must be provided. • Be prepared to discuss your disability and accommodations. Discuss your needs and accommodations with the coordinator. Discuss the accommodations you used in the past, what has worked and what you think you will need while attending the institution. • Ask questions and confirm your understanding. If the coordinator determines that you are eligible for services, he or she will decide what accommodations you will receive. Make sure you have a full understanding of your responsibilities, including how often you must self-disclose or update your documentation.
