Description of Hospital –

Austin / Northern Health General Information

Conditions of Employment

Conditions are as per the Australian Medical Association (Victoria) DiT Agreement 2008-2012.

Postgraduate Medical Education

There is a dedicated Clinical Education Unit at Austin Health and a Medical Education Unit at Northern Health which provide support and innovative training opportunities in a safe learning environment for doctors in training. These activities include orientation, mentoring, vocational guidance, feedback, assessment and professional development activities. The Clinical Education Unit and the Medical Education Unit are currently working on the development of an integrated learning map that encapsulates the key principles of the New Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors. The work in this area is well advanced, and should be ready for implementation very shortly.

Orientation

There is a 3-day comprehensive orientation program for interns that includes a full day of shadowing with the former intern and an interactive clinical skills workshop. At Austin Health, we provide an Intern Liaison Officer for the first week of the new intern year; this role supports the interns after hours and over week end duties to ensure a supported and safe environment for all interns. For new and returning HMOs and Registrars there is a half-day orientation at both hospitals that delivers key organisational information on rostering, payroll, credentialing activities and education and support programs.

Unit Handbooks

Comprehensive handbooks are available for each unit. These are designed to support ‘on the job’ orientation provided by the units and to assist with the overall transition from one unit to another.

Mid Term Feedback, Assessment and Rotation Evaluation

Mid term feedback is provided verbally by the Registrar. Formal written assessment occurs at the end of each rotation and is conducted by a senior member of medical

staff. All rotations are evaluated at the end of each term using a de-identified process.

Rosters

Yearly rotations are available and distributed prior to commencement. These are set after careful consideration of training requirements, past rotations, special interests and requests. Whilst every effort is made to accommodate requests, this is not always possible.

Physician Training

The Central North West Basic Physician Training Consortium incorporates Austin Health, Northern Health, Bendigo Health, and Wimmera Healthcare Group (Horsham Hospital). The Consortium is renowned for its physician-training program and has an excellent pass rate in the FRACP Written and Clinical Exams. The Consortium runs a mock written exam in early February which emulates true exam conditions. A feedback session gives the opportunity for trainees to discuss the questions and answers. Directors of Physician Training and Senior Medical Registrars at both Austin and Northern organise an extensive series of topic tutorials, long and short case clinical tutorials and arrange Saturday morning practice clinical exams to adequately prepare trainees for the clinical exam. The practice clinical exams are held at Austin Health, Northern Health and Bendigo Health. A Professional Development program is available for Physician Trainees through the Consortium and covers topics such as Feedback – Teaching styles – Mentoring – Managing Conflict – Team building skills. Please refer to the PMCV website for matching information in relation to the BPT2 and BPT3+ matches. Austin Health incorporates the Austin Hospital, Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital and Royal Talbot Hospital. In addition there are strong links between Austin Health and The University of Melbourne, Clinical School. Intern positions are recruited independently of Northern Health, but most other HMO2 and HMO3 positions are recruited jointly with Northern Health. General Medical Registrar positions are also jointly recruited with Northern Health and Bendigo HealthCare as a part of the consortium management strategy. l formation Austin Health won the premiers award for most outstanding health service for 2006. The incorporation of Austin Health, the Mercy Hospital and Warringal Private makes the precinct the largest training facility in Victoria. These sites provide outstanding teaching and learning opportunities for our Junior Medical Staff. Furthermore the new Austin Tower encompasses new HMO quarters as well as an extensive education precinct and modern ward design and facilities. A clinical skills lab is situated on the Austin Hospital site. The clinical skills lab provides ‘hands on training’ and simulated activity for all members of the health care team.

Director of Medical Education

Austin Health has appointed a Director of Medical Education to head up the Medical Education Unit. The Director works with the HMO Manager to ensure that the best possible rotations are available for doctors in training at Austin Health. The Education Unit is well supported by both clinical and non-clinical staff including a Director of Clinical Training, Supervisor of Intern Training, Director of Physician Training, GP Liaison Officer, Medical Clinical Educator, Medical Education Officer and Projects Coordinator.

Surgical Training

Austin Health was the first hospital in Melbourne to run a series of ‘hands-on’ weekend workshops on Basic Surgical Skills for interns and basic and advanced trainees. The skills taught include open laparoscopy techniques, intra corporal and extra corporal knot tying and hand sewn end-to-end anastomosis. The workshops provide the opportunity for

immediate feedback from experienced consultants. We provided training in interview techniques and have a high success rate of entry into Surgical Training Programs.

Included in this program is a series of workshop activities that take place throughout the year. The program is well supported by senior physicians in each practice.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support Course

Austin Health Critical Care Staff run various courses throughout the year to improve doctors in training confidence with handling cardiac arrests. Annual Basic Life Support (BLS) credentialing is mandatory.

Career Counselling

There are many opportunities throughout the year to get advice from the staff of the Medical Education Unit and the Medical Workforce Unit on your career prospects.

Mentoring Program

Austin Health has a well established mentoring program available for junior doctors to access should they wish to do so. Both clinical and non-clinical mentors are available.

Elizabeth Austin Registrar

The Elizabeth Austin Registrar is another resource for junior medical staff at Austin Health. The Elizabeth Austin Registrar is available to provide support and advice relating to clinical situations, and also participates in delivery of education sessions for staff.

Formal Training Programs

Austin Health has in place formal training programs for interns, HMO2’s and HMO3’s. These programs provide a structured and supportive environment for learning, and are evidence of the importance placed on continuing education by Austin Health.

Description of the M2M Program

The M2M program has been developed by a partnership of Alpine Health, Cobram District Health, Numurkah District Health Service and Yarrawonga Health. M2M is a sub-regional model for intern placement, based in small rural teaching health services. The M2M intern training experience is unique. Our placement structure will give you the total experience in both rural and regional hospitals and is based in some of Victoria’s most beautiful locations such as Cobram, Mt Beauty, Falls Creek, Nathalia, Numurkah and Yarrawonga. The core medical and surgical rotations will be at Northeast Health Wangaratta and emergency medicine at Albury Wodonga Health (Wodonga Campus). The aim of the M2M experience is for the interns to: be the patient’s first contact and follow the patient

through from initial presentation; have access to hands-on medicine in a variety of

settings – ambulatory, hospital and residential care;

The region is a major fruit growing, dairying and beef district. Alpine Shire lies to the south-east of, but is not contiguous with, Moira Shire. It extends from the Buffalo, Ovens and Kiewa River valleys to the mountains, snowfields and national parks. The Shire surrounds but does not include the Mount Hotham and Falls Creek ski resorts.

4 Interns will reside within or close to Moira Shire and 1 will reside within or close to Alpine Shire. The intern year involves at least 48 weeks of supervised clinical experience and comprises core and non-core rotations. The core rotations are: Medicine – 10 weeks Surgery – 10 weeks Emergency Medicine – 10 weeks For the remaining 20 weeks, each intern will complete their GP Rotation at one of the following rural locations:- Cobram, Yarrawonga, Mt Beauty/Falls Creek, Numurkah or Nathalia These rotations will reflect the workload of rural general practitioners, incorporating for example, work in local hospitals and residential aged care facilities. The Royal Melbourne Hospital – City Campus Victoria's oldest and busiest hospital, The Royal Melbourne Hospital has been caring for Victorians since 1848. In the past 12 months, RMH treated 93,000 inpatients and more than 120,000 outpatients. Centrally located, RMH is a leading tertiary teaching, specialist and referral hospital. It has an international reputation for its commitment to clinical research, education and patient care. RMH has an extensive range of services including cardiac, oncology, neurosciences and trauma.

RMH operates with a team emphasis and includes an extensive training program. The Royal Melbourne Hospital – Royal Park Campus The Royal Park Campus specialises in aged care, rehabilitation and ambulatory services. Postgraduate Medical Education

There is a dedicated Medical Education Unit at each site which provides support and innovative training opportunities in a safe learning environment for doctors in training. Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors. The work in this area is well advanced, and should be ready for implementation very shortly.

Orientation

There is a 5 day comprehensive orientation program for interns that includes a 2 days of shadowing with the former intern and an interactive clinical skills workshop.

Formal written assessment occurs at the end of each rotation and is conducted by a senior member of medical staff.

The practice clinical

exams are held at Austin Health, Northern Health and Bendigo Health. A Professional Development program is available for Physician Trainees through the Consortium and covers topics such as Feedback – Teaching styles – Mentoring – Managing Conflict – Team building skills.
