ThisexhibitionwillbeopenedbytheMinisterofCultureandTourismRepublicofIndonesia,Mr.

Ir.JeroWacik,SE,onMonday,April25th2011at10.00.

TheinaugurationwillalsobeattendedbytheAmbassadors,Culturalattachofthecomrade

countries,officialsofthesurroundingCultureandTourismMinistry,andotherinvitations.

ThisNationalMuseumsspecialeventon2011isthecooperationofNationalMuseum

IndonesiawithGuangxiMuseumofNationalities,China.Theobjectiveofexhibitionisnotonly

to spread out information about the variety andwealth of Indonesian culture, but also to

intensify the bond of partnership and friendship between Indonesia and Chinawhich have

somesimilaritiesofculture.ThisexhibitionwillbeheldinIndonesiafromApril25thuptoMay

31st2011,whereasinChinafromJuly1stuptoNovember1st2011.Thisisthesecondtimefor

NationalMuseumIndonesiaandGuangxiMuseumofNationalitiesChinaheldthecooperation

in the form of exhibition. In 2009 2010, exhibitionwas only held in GuangxiMuseum of

Nationalities,NanningCityChina,withthemePreciousCulturalRelicsofIndonesia.

Thisthemewasusedbecauseofthedesireofresponsibility toparticipate inproviding

informationandincreasethecomprehensionaboutthediverseofIndonesianculturaltreasures

whichincertainaspectsenrichedbytheelementsofChineseculture.

Basedonhistory, thebeginningofChinesearrival to Indonesiawasntknownexactly.

Peoplepredicted thatChinesehaddone the trade to Indonesia since thebeginningofAD, it

wasseenfromthearchaeologicalceramicsremainedfromtheHanDynasty(2ndcenturyBC

3rdcenturyAD),stored inNationalMuseum.Otheropinionsaidthattheoldestarchaeological

heritagefromChinainIndonesiawasajarfromTangDynasty(6th8thcenturyBC).Buildupon

thoseheritages, itwas concluded thatChinese in Indonesiahadbeenexisted since6th8th

centuryAD.

TherewasamassiveexodusofChinese in16th17thcenturyAD to theareaofsouth

China,suchasVietnam,Thailand,Philippine,Malaysia,Singapore,andIndonesiacausedbycivil

warandprolongeddrought.Atthesametime,IndonesiawascolonizedbyTheDutchthrough

TheDutchTradeUnions (VOC) requiredmanyworkers tobuildanurbanareawhichnow is

knownbyTheOldCity(KotaTua),westJakarta.TheDutchusedtheworkersfromChineseto

buildthaturbanarea,becausetheywereconsideredtobenimbleanddiligentworkers.

Chinese people besides in Batavia, also spread out and lived in coast area, near the

seaport,becausetheygenerallytradedsilk,ceramicsandgoldthreadwhichweretheirtrade

commodity.FromIndonesiantrader,theyobtainedcamphor,spices,sandalwood,etc.

Indonesian region that inhabited bymany Chinese people could be found inMedan,

Palembang, Bangka, Jakarta, Semarang, Pekalongan, Cirebon, Lasem, Surabaya and

Singkawang. Their existence in Indonesia thenblendedwith the localnations,unwittingly it

createdacculturationbetweenlocalandChineseculture.

Manyarchaeologicalevidencefound in Indonesiashowedhow intensetherelationship

betweenChinawith Indonesia.Thoseevidences in the furtherculturaldevelopment showed

thattheChineseculturehasbeencoloringtheculturaltreasuresofIndonesia.

In particular, Chinese culture thatwas very clear coloring Betawi nations in daily life

many absorbed words from Fujian Chinese dialect such as gua/gue (I/me), lu/elu (you),

engkong(grandfather),encek(nameforfullbloodedChineseman),centeng(paidthugs),cabo

(prostitute)andkongkow(hangout).Meanwhile,inbuyandsaletransactioninthemarketwe

couldfindthewordssuchascepek(onehundred),nopek(twohundred),gopek(fivehundred),

ceceng/seceng(onethousand),noceng(twothousand),goceng(fivethousand),andceban(ten

thousand).

Notonly theChineseabsorptionwords thatbecame thedaily languageof theBetawi

nations, Chinesewords also enshrined to be the name of place (toponymy) in Jakarta that

referredtothehistory.WestJakartaandNorthJakartaareawasaChinatownareawherewe

could find somenamesofplaceor street that stillusedChinesenames.ForexampleAngke

comefromAngandKee(meansbloodandcorpse).ThatvillagecalledAngkebecause in1740

therehadbeenthetragedyofChineseslaughteringinBataviabyDutchColonial.ThoseChinese

corps laidandthrownawaytotherivernearthatplace, itcausedthatfullycorpsvillageand

rivercalledAngke.Before that tragedy, itsnamewasDuckVillage,becausemanyofChinese

wasbreedingduck.ThestreetinPasarBaruarea,Lautze,wasawellknownphilosopherfrom

China.Now,thereisamosqueinLautzestreetfortheMuslimsfromChina.

The existence of Pagoda (temple), Chinastyle architectural building, ceramics, batik,

craft lacquer (with Chinese decoration type), barong Bali, lion dance (barongsai), gambang

kromong,wayangpotehi (puppet), the celebrationofChineseNewYear,abacus, chopsticks,

coins in religion ceremony in Bali, Betawi wedding dress, fireworks, firecrackers, Chinese

vocabularyandChinese foodthatactuallytheevidencesofChinasacculturation insocial life

andIndonesianculture.Indonesianrespondedpositivelytheouterculturethatadaptedtolocal

culture.

Theaimsof thisexhibition titledcolorofuniquenessare togive thedescription to

publics, about the history of Chineses arrival in Indonesia, explain about archaeological

heritagefromprehistorictimeuntilclassicaltimethatcontainedtheChinesecultureelements

that found in Indonesia. The explanation about Chinese acculturation in Indonesias culture

occurred in Indonesian traditional fabric/textileespecially coastbatik, craftart,architecture,

sculpture,artperformanceandChineseceramics,also thedescriptionabout theelementsof

ChineseculturethatcoloredIndonesiansociallife.

Around200 collectionsdisplayed came fromNationalMuseum (106objects),Guangxi

Museum ofNationalities,Nanning City, China (92 objects) and Institute for Preservation of

ArchaeologicalHeritage Trowulan (2 objects) to inform the public from every single part of

people to take part and appreciate the values of the variety of cultural and the similarity

elements.

With the inaugurationof ColorofUniquenessexhibitionat least the societywillbe

able to relish andutilizemuseum as the educationalmedia about the treasuresofnational

culture. Hopedthatthesocietywillbemoreappreciateaboutthevaluesofnationalculture

and itsdiversityand realize that thedevelopmentof certainnational culturewill fallon the

cultureacculturation toenrich that culture. Italsowill increase theappreciation toward the

material(tangible)andnonmaterial(intangible)culturepreservation
