Remaking a Movie Poster

Poster Assignment

We were given a poster from the movie ‘DRIVE’. It looked like this:

Introduction

We worked in a group of four that included me, Mustafa, Nooris and Saad.

This is how our poster looked at the end.

Looking at the poster from the movie perspective, it falls into three genres. Action, Drama and Crime

But if we look at it from the poster itself then it seems to fall into the genres that are Action, Thriller and Adventure.

Genre

A person can easily tell by looking at the poster that that movie is about cars, racing and about someone who is very essential to the story and that this story runs around him big time.

The story itself in actual is also pretty close to this. Where Ryan gosling plays the main character who is a mysterious Hollywood stuntman but moonlights as a getaway driver. He helps his neighbour in a heist but the job goes terribly wrong and then he is on his own. This might be why on the poster he seems to be very serious and shown looking down at the ground.

Narrative

The main subject of the poster has been captured with low angle portrait shot and then posterized for the picture.

The car has been photographed on a canted shot

The smaller guy in front of the car is the same guy from behind the car and this time he has been captured through full length shot.

In the original poster, the setting is supposedly in front of a flyover. But due to non-availability of transport to go to a flyover for a photo shoot together, we decided to continue without it.

We went to the school’s parking lot and photographed Saad and the car. We can see that the poster is made by overlaying one setting over another. The guy is resting his back on the car while holding a hammer in his hand. He also wears a jacket that is clearly visible in both his pictures. The Car plays a vital role in the poster as it in the centre of the poster and as much as it separates both the picture, it combines them as well. There is not much movement in the scene. In the full length shot, the guy is rather just holding the hammer and looking down probably in his mind thinking something really deep. The bigger picture also shows the guy with a serious face.

Mise en Scene

Me and Mustafa both decided to take the responsibility of the editing. We made two separate posters that can be seen on the next page. Initially we planned on mixing and matching both the posters once complete however we later our minds and decided to continue with the one that I made. For in depth Editing and Process head on to my previous blog posts.

Saad was our model for the project and Nooris was the photographer. Both did their job pretty well. They also kept giving us ideas for the posters.

We did everything without spending a penny on the project.

We worked as a Team. Everyone did his/her part.
