Opportunities are provided for over 900 interns yearly at its museums, offices, and research facilities. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institution (STRI) in Panama, is a bureau of the Smithsonian Institution based outside of the United States, is dedicated to understanding biological diversity. Although STRI is based in Panama, research is conducted throughout the tropics. The Supplementary Research Award Program is a mechanism to replace the practice of waiving or reducing STRI fees for visitors. Fleur L. Strand   Professional Opportunity Award Application Deadline: November 8, 2012Award: $1000 + advance EB meeting registration reimbursement The Fleur L. Strand Award was established to recognize the achievements of a young physiologist, (graduate student or postdoctoral), enabling the recipient to attend the APS annual meeting at the Experi-mental Biology meeting.  The Award is named in honor of Dr. Fleur L. Strand, Professor Emeritus, New York University.  Dr. Strand was the first to show that stress-evoked hormones, such as adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), could have a direct effect on peripheral systems, such as muscle, independent of the adrenal gland.  This effect was demonstrated in developing and regenerating neuromuscular systems.  It was previously be-lieved that ACTH could only act through the adrenal gland. The award is open to a physiologist working in any area of research.  To be considered for the award, the candidate must be the first author of an abstract submitted to the APS annual meeting and must be a member of APS at the time of application (either Student or Regular). To receive the award, recipients must attend EB, present a paper at the meeting, and attend the APS Business Meeting. The awardee re-ceives $1,000 and complimentary registration for the Experimental Biology meeting. The annual Fleur L.
