Open gym parks-The latest fitness trend

Open gym parks have become the lat-est fitness trends that have been receiv-ing overwhelming response from the res-idents of all age groups. Apart from theother facilities, these parks provide hostsof open air gym equipment which are freeof charge and can be used by residents atany time of the day.

Studies have shown that outdoor phys-ical activity has greater advantages. It low-ers a person's blood pressure and heartrate. Hence, exercise outdoors feels lessstrenuous than similar exercise done in-doors. Moreover, fresh air helps in fight-ing insomnia and improves the quality ofsleep. Getting sunshine, which has becomea rare treat, is an added advantage. Freshoutdoor air and natural light invigorate andprovide more energy for the mind andbody. Sunshine provides the vitamin D andalso enhances energy generation in themuscles and oxidation of the tissues. Moreimportantly, the facilities come free ofcharge. Hence, can be easily enjoyed bypeople of all strata and age groups.

In today’s scenario, when family mem-bers do not get much time for each other, these open gym parks, can help in bring-ing the families and friends together. Peo-ple can exercise together and can evenencourage and guide those who are notfamiliar with various equipment installedin the park. For many senior citizens, whofeel walking and jogging are the only ex-ercises they can indulge in, the manyequipment that have been specifically in-stalled for them, will give them chance toexplore new fitness techniques. The openair gym provides them with free access toa host of fitness equipment such as shoul-der rehabilitation device, surfboard exer-ciser, waist-twisting table, abdominalstretching stand, back massager, ellipticalcross-trainer, stretching rack, leg lifter andstepper.

Just few minutes with nature can helpin improving mental wellbeing and self-esteem. Free and unstructured exercisein the outdoors boosts problem-solvingskills, focus and self-discipline. Socially, itimproves cooperation, flexibility, and self-awareness. Emotional benefits include re-duced aggression and increased happi-ness. Nature is a tool to get people of allage groups to experience not just the widerworld, but themselves. Let us all play aconscious and proactive role in develop-ing a positive outlook towards outdoorgames or sports and exercises. During my continu-ous research work tounearth various psy-chological factors lead-ing to human success, failures and happiness,I realized that life posesnew challenges if wedon’t get into habit ofserious continuouslearning. In this articleI would be sharing wis-dom learnt from manyand from my very ownwork in this field. Cer-tain natural principlesemerged in the scheme

of Mother Nature whichif followed honestly anddedicatedly, will trulybenefit in the path oflearning and growth. Tobegin with it is so foun-dational that "Learningis Meditation”. Somekey inputs to makelearning meaningfulare:

• Get 100% physical-ly, mentally &emotionally involvedgiving undivided atten-tion.

• Remove every clut-ter from mind.

• Consider the per-son from whom you arelearning as your men-tor, irrespective of ageor any such factors.

• Learn by absorb-ing every input like adry sponge.

• Never learn aloneis a powerful philosophy.Choose a partner i.e.someone with whomyou will share whatev-er you have learnt. De-

Learning is meditationvelop firm mindset thatyou will share every-thing with the chosenpartner and enrich thisperson with whateveryou have learnt. Makea habit of sharing on adaily basis or atleasttwice in a week. Encour-aging children to teachyounger ones will putthem in the loop of learnto teach and teach tolearn. Believe me teach-ing is the best methodto learn.

• While teachingstand like a pillar to fa-cilitate the learning ofyour buddy.

• Encourage yourbuddy to ask questions. When the buddy ques-tions your point of view, then you must strive tofind the right answers.By encouraging yourbuddy to ask questionsyou will in fact uplift

your learning ability.Don’t be disheartened ifyou are not able to an-swer all the questionsfully. Assure them thatyou will revert by clari-fying the same withyour mentor who wouldclarify it 100%.

• During learningand sharing be open toexplore new paradigms.Whatever we are today,is basically because ofour learnt paradigmsand the resultant hard-wiring created in ourbrain. Willingness torelook into own para-digms help in reducinginner resistance andmental blocks. Newlearnings may manytimes hurt &break you. It may evenmake you think “is itreally the right ap-proach?” but be open tochange. Some of thenew paradigm canbring breakthrough re-sults.

• Never go to a placeof learning without apen and paper or appro-priate recording tools.Without these tools alearner becomes a vic-tim like that soldier whohas gone to a battlefieldwithout arms and am-munitions.

• Understand thepoorest place to store in-formation is our brainhence follow the philos-ophy “Never end up onlythinking….always con-vert your thinking intoinking”.

• I always tell peo-ple that during the pro-cess of learning ask ev-ery question in yourmind openly and fear-lessly as living with ig-norance is more injuri-ous to self. Once youhave been answeredwith the right answers, your fear and inhibi-

tions vanishes and youbecome enriched. Don’tfear that people maythink you are a fool ormay laugh at you whenyou ask question.

• Next importantthing is be energetic andenthusiastic to learn inevery place.

This process oflearning with a commit-ment to take definitiveaction and sharing withothers can go a long wayin your life. It will keepyou always updated andfighting fit in this everchanging world.

Christmas vaca-tion will start soon inschools. During vaca-tions, kids are at aloss to understandwhat theyshould do andhow should theyspend the time?Making scrapbooks or readingmoral stories canhelp them tospend their timein a valuableway. Bed timestories are fa-mous but Akbarand Birbal sto-ries even applyfor the presentgeneration ofchildren in a bigway.

Birbal, orRaja Birbal, wasa Hindu advisorin the court of theMughal emperor, Ak-bar. He is mostlyknown in the Indiansubcontinent for thefolk tales which focuson his wit. Birbal wasappointed by Akbaras a poet and singerin around 1556–1562.

Birbal stories arevery famous and pop-ular in India amongall ages of people. They are also calledby another name Ak-bar-Birbal Stories. There was a Mogul

Emperor in India, Ak-bar The Great (1542-1605). His full namewas Jalaludden Mo-hammed Akbar Pad-shah Ghazi and he

ruled India from 1560to 1605. He himself wasilliterate, but he invit-ed several learned peo-ple in his court. Amongthese people, nine werevery famous and werecalled Nav Ratna (ninejewels of the MogulCrown) of his court.Among these nine jew-els, five people weremore famous - Tansen,Todarmal, Abul Fazal,Maan Singh and Bir-bal.

The exchanges be-tween Akbar and Birbal

have been recorded inmany volumes. Manyof these have becomefolk stories in Indiantradition. Birbal's col-lection of poetry pub-

lished under thepen name Brahmare preserved inBharatpur Mu-seum, Rajast-han, India. Many courtierswere jealouswith Birbal andoften plotted forhis downfall. There are manystories found onthis issue too. There are a cou-ple of other sto-ries too whichare of the sametime and typeand are as inter-esting as Birbal'sones.

There are manybooks publishedabout Birbal Storiesbut the collector's edi-tion is a treasure topreserve. India is a source, destination and transitcountry for womenbeing trafficked for theuse of forced labourand commercial sexualexploitation. Womenare being held in debtbondage and are veryvulnerable to forcedlabor working in ricemills, brick kilns, andagriculture and inembroidery factories.Interestingly, atelevision debateconcluded that divorcerates and womenempowerment aredirectly proportional.Empowered though, women's status hasnot been any better, thanks to honourkillings, call centreatrocities, femaleinfanticides and youname it. Imagine aworld without it! Theworld of work ischanging, and withsignificant implica-tions for women. Onone hand, we haveglobalization, techno-logical and digitalrevolution and theopportunities theybring, and on the otherhand, the growinginformality of labour, unstable livelihoodsand incomes, newfiscal and tradepolicies and environ-mental impacts—all ofwhich must be ad-dressed in the contextof women’s economicempowerment.

It has rightlypointed out that“Single means muchmore than living lifeyour way”. It is foundthat a single womanfaces many psychologi-cal and emotionalhurdles because of thetraditional views ofsociety. The class ofsingle women with anew status may be the

Let us respect womendirect result of the newconcept of women’sdevelopment. Onewould find thatfacilities in ourcountry to welcomethis new trend are stillinadequate and youngwomen will have to betrained for such apossibility. There aremany single womenwho are self-confidentand have a positiveself-image. Womenprefer to stay singlebecause it gives themthe right to live theway they liked andutilize their incomethe way they wished. In India, a goodnumber of womenhave begun to remainsingle and they havevalued their indepen-dence regardingphysical matters anddecision making. Oursociety needs tochange, to help thesingle women to standon their feet withdignity and pride. Thephenomenon of beingsingle either by choiceor by circumstances, isa deviation fromtraditional expecta-tions but both thefamily as well as thewomen themselvesneed to redefine theirconcept of suitability ofa marriage partner.Inter-cast or inter-religious marriagescould be encouraged asthis would broaden therange of choice ofpartners. Societyshould stop exploitingthem and respect theirright to be happy andindependent.

Crime ratesagainst women aremuch higher in bigcities than in eithersmall cities or ruralareas. Time hashelplessly watchedwomen suffering in theform of discrimination,

oppression, exploita-tion, degradation, aggression, humilia-tion. In a countrywhere women andgirls are traditionallyrevered as the Motherand the Goddess, thisis simply unaccept-able. A society that isunable to respect, protect and nurture itswomen and childrenloses its moral moor-ings and runs adrift. The major lacuna inthe laws is that theyare not gender neutral. Many women andtheir family members, therefore, misuse themto settle scores, intimidate and harassthe husband and hisfamily. It is notuncommon to projectself-inflicted injuriesas assault by hus-bands. Sensitivitytraining and knowl-edge of the rights ofwomen and childrenare another vital needand must be mademandatory for all lawenforcement agencies. To increase thereporting of suchcases, at first, we needto empower the womenand children. Theymust be educated ontheir rights andencourage them tocome forward toregister the cases. There are manyviolent cases but dueto stigma in thesociety very few arereported. The problemcannot be solved by thegovernment alone butby a national awaken-ing involving theentire country andcivil society. A nation-wide campaign isneeded to reigniteIndia’s core values andtraditions that respectand nurture women. The writer is freelancer,

Dr. Babasa-heb Ambedkar is known as the drafter of the Indian con-stitution. Constitution Day (National Law Day), alsoknown as Samvidhan Divas, is celebrated on 26 Novem-ber every year to commemorate the adoption ofthe Constitution of India.

A notable minority still does nothave Aadhaar. An estimated 28 mil-lion adults do not have Aadhaar, most-ly in Assam and Meghalaya whereenrolment has been slow due to ques-tions about legal residency amongstothers. Among vulnerable groups, ahigher share of third-gender residents(30%) and people who are homeless(27%) do not have the ID.

Updating is the hardest part of theAadhaar process. One in five peoplewho tried to update their Aadhaar didnot succeed. 4% of Aadhaar cardscurrently have errors.

Aadhaar has supported inclusion.49% of people used Aadhaar to accessone or more services like food rations, bank accounts, and social pensions forthe first time. For 8% of people,Aadhaar was their first ever ID.

Problems with Aadhaar sometimesled to denial of welfare services. 0.8%of people experienced exclusion due toAadhaar-related reasons from a keywelfare service (PDS rations, MGN-REGS, social pensions) that they hadearlier received (versus 3.3% due tonon-Aadhaar factors).

Aadhaar has improved service de-livery. 80% feel that Aadhaar has madePDS rations, MGNREGS, or socialpensions more reliable. Using Aadhaar, residents were 40% more likely to ob-tain a new SIM card within one day, compared to using other forms of ID.

Despite the Supreme Court ruling, many people find Aadhaar to be de fac-to mandatory for bank accounts, SIMcards, and school enrolment. Morethan half of those who used Aadhaarto get a SIM card or bank account saidthat the service provider accepted onlyAadhaar for identification purposes.0.5% of 6 to 14 year olds could not en-roll in school due to Aadhaar-relatedreasons.

Most people appreciate Aadhaar’suniversal acceptance; some have con-cerns. 72% appreciate that it is a con-venient, universal ID; nearly half ofthose also worry about linking it to

too many services. Most residents are satisfied and

trust Aadhaar. 92% of people are sat-isfied with Aadhaar. 67% of people whohave been excluded from a service dueto problems with Aadhaar still saythey are satisfied. 90% say it keepstheir data safe, while 61% say it pre-vents others from accessing their ben-efits. 8% worry about its misuse.

Newer digital features are yet tobe embraced. 77% have never usedfeatures such as Aadhaar, QR code, virtual Aadhaar or masked Aadhaar.Only 39% of residents have the cor-rect mobile phone number linked totheir Aadhaar.

Gaurav Gupta, Dalberg’s Partnerand Asia Regional Director on theoccasion said ” The research is notan attempt to adjudicate the ultimatemerits of Aadhaar. It is about takingresidents' perspectives into accountto help better design and implementAadhaar. We believe the UID’s suc-cess will ultimately depend on howwell the program can learn from theexperiences and concerns of those whouse or are not yet able to use Aadhaarin their daily lives”.

Roopa Kudva, Managing Directorof Omidyar Network India, whichfunded the research and the report, said, “We believe that technology, used responsibly, is a powerful forcefor inclusion. We actively supporthigh quality research as a vital com-ponent of system level impact – tohelp creation and continuous im-provement of robust digital infra-structure and technology solutions forinclusion. We are delighted that therich dataset underlying this verylarge survey is being made public, forthe benefit of all stakeholders.”

1.5 years; Gets a new lease of lifeIn 2016, she was whopping 110 kgs, having sleep

apnoea and depression that affected her day to day life

Dr Aprana Govil Bhaskar

Bariatric Surgeon

Dr. Savita Salian, abranch manager atLIC, spent the last 3years caring for herhusband who under-went brain surgery.Soon, she started expe-riencing bouts of fa-tigue and tiredness, and before she could doanything, she realizedthat at 49 years of ageshe had piled up 110kgs. As her own weightcontinued to increase, she started experienc-ing difficulty in sleep-ing.

On consulting thedoctor, it was revealedthat she suffered fromobstructive sleep ap-noea (OSA). It is a dis-ease that reduces theoxygen level in the bodyand increases carbondioxide levels. Patientsexperience difficulty insleeping and as a resultof this feel tired andsleepy during the day.Patients are not able torecognize the symptoms

and attribute to otherstress-causing factorsin life. If left untreated, sleep apnoea leads toincreased pressure onthe lungs and heartraising the risk of heartfailure. To her dismay, the patient also startedexperiencing other sideeffects of obesity likebreathlessness and dif-ficulty in walking.

Dr. Aparna GovilBhasker, Bariatric andLaparoscopic Surgeon,Currae Specialty Hos-pitals, Thane, high-lighted, “Obesity is adisease that is affectingmore and more Indians. As of today, bariatricsurgery is the only op-tion that can lead tosustained weight losswhen it comes to losing30 kgs or more. Obesi-ty is as much of a dis-ease as cancer or diabe-tes and has as manyside effects. It affectsthe body from head totoe and must also betreated early in thecourse of the disease.”

She added, “Thispatient visited meabout 1.5 years ago. Af-ter clinical evaluation, she underwent bariat-ric surgery in the formof laparoscopic sleevegastrectomy. In thissurgery, the stomach isdivided vertically and

about 65% of it is re-moved. Multiple mech-anisms lead to weightloss. Hence, reductionof food intake, early sa-tiety, decreased hunger, hormonal effects are afew of these mecha-nisms by which sleevegastrectomy leads toweight loss. Post-sur-gery, she weighed 64kgs. The patient is backon track after losing 46kgs and was able to getrid of sleep apnoea anddepression. She hasalso experienced a posi-tive psychosocialchange in how peopleview her.” her presentweight is 64 kgs.

“3 years ago, Icouldn’t take care ofmyself owing to myhusband’s ill health.Unfortunately, I piledup 110 kgs, and my ac-tivities were restricted. But, I thank the doctorfor helping me live lifethe way I wanted to. Ifeel as though I havefallen in love with my-self again. I make surethat I exercise and fol-low a well-balanceddiet. My productivity atwork is also increasedand I recently got a pro-motion too. Dance of Democracy- The game of Hide and SeekA month after the Maharashtra Assembly election results were an-

nounced on October 24, the political impasse in the State seems to havereached a climax, albeit with a stunning overnight twist. In less than twelvehours, the focus shifted from the NCP-Congress-Shiv Sena alliance thatwas all set to form a government, to the BJP, as Devendra Fadnavis tookoath as the Chief Minister along with NCP leader Ajit Pawar as DeputyCM.

Elections to the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly were held on Octo-ber 21. Allies BJP and Shiv Sena emerge as the two largest parties in theresults, but both parties see a dip in the number of seats won and their voteshare. Meanwhile, the NCP and the Congress are net gainers, with 54 and44 seats respectively. Although a BJP-Shiv Sena government with Mr. Fad-navis at the helm seems like a done deal, the Sena insists on a rotationalchief ministership. The BJP, however, maintains that it does not intend toshare the post.

Although a BJP-Shiv Sena government with Mr. Fadnavis at the helmseems like a done deal, the Sena insists on a rotational chief ministership. The BJP, however, maintains that it does not intend to share the post. Thetwo parties, in a bid to boost their numbers, enlist the support of MLAsfrom small outfits and independents. The State is suffering from farmerproblems. The instability in the State is not good for the development of theState. It was important to form the government and hence claimed to formthe government. The President's rule was removed accordingly.

A lesson for Indian politicians where money is more valuable than hon-esty and dignity, only way we can reform this type of dealing is governmentfunded election it means each and every political party should get equalamount of money and every week they should submit/ publish the expendi-ture details. Actually, this dirty practice of snooping should be made illegaland should come under criminal activities. Then only democracy will sur-vive. Right now government formation is just a plaything.

Though nothing in politics is surprising as public can never read theirpolitical leaders' minds and know their real intentions till the last minute, yet this seems somewhat awful as the till the last night, the NCP-Congressand Shiv Sena trio was reportedly all set to form government in Maharash-tra but Mr Pawar eventually proved his one-upmanship by outwitting allplayers and did think twice before turning tables even on the Grand OldParty, its pre-poll ally as well. The BJP again outplayed all the politicalparties and placed its CM again in Maharashtra comfortably again. Whata piece of political manoeuvre!

Sena after trumpeting about the CMs post and forming the governmentin Maharashtra, now appears to be silent after exploiting all the permuta-tions and the combinations. It was indeed a futile exercise after partingways with coalition partner BJP. Despite all the set backs, still Sena con-tended by saying the talks are on course. The eternally optimist Shiv Se-na's much piece claimed that there are no hurdles and the talks are mov-ing smoothly. The undue delay is causing concern for the people of Maha-rashtra. Anyway, there is hope of hopes for the CMs chair and plumb postin the ministry.

Stability is the key word for the people in the ensuing State Elections.Over and above people look for free and fair elections and incident freepolling. We need to have a government with absolute majority. After seeingcoalition politics people are fed up with price of vegetables, fruits and othercommodities going up to pinch the pocket of the people very much. The bestsolution to the problem is to have an absolute majority for a single party sothat there will more co-ordination. More over the Centre-State relationsshould be cordial to meet both the ends up and come up with an amicablesolution to more pressing problems facing the State. It is time to have abroader outlook for pressing problems and do a world of good to the welfareof the people. The destiny of the two States is in the hands of the people. They should go in large numbers to vote on the polling day.

If by chance, the trio makes a combination and comes out with a CMPand installs the Government, what would we call the 1st party who alignedwith another agreeing and campaigning poll promises are they not devi-ating from the promises made to public and adopting another set of de-mands from their opponents, just to be in power? Can such a party betrusted ever by the common man who slogged it out for campaigning aswell as voted for them? Now the matter is going up to SC level and thegame of hide and seek continue for over a month and the public are madeto pay for voting for trusted parties. In the end Fadnavis resigned to bringback Maharashtra politics to square one. It is indeed the dance of democ-racy.
