Challenging all students to meet their full potential

BOYER VALLEY COMMUNITY SCHOOLSDISTRICT NEWSLETTER

Bullpup NewsBy Mike Weber, K-5 Principal [email protected]

Conferences First quarter conferences will be held on Tuesday, October 24,

and Wednesday, October 25. Conference times will be 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Elementary teachers will meet to schedule conferences and try to coordinate times with all of the students in your family. There will be no school on Friday, October 27.

Student Absences When your child is absent from school, please be sure to call

the school and let us know the nature of the absence. Hollie or Nurse Jodi will call you if you happen to forget, but it is more ef-ficient if you can call the school rather than having Hollie or Jodi call several numbers to get the information we need. It is best if you can call before 8:15 AM. Feel free to leave a message on Hollie’s voice mail if you call before 7:45 AM. If you know your child is going to be absent from school the next day, you can leave a message on Hollie’s voice mail the night before the ab-sence. Along those same lines, if you should encounter a change in address, phone number, or employment, please call the school so we can update our emergency contact information.

Family Emergencies Families often encounter emergencies or problems that can

interfere with the continuity of the family’s schedule or structure. This can often lead to difficulties at school for the students in those families. Please feel free to share such emergencies or situations with your child’s teachers. This may help answer ques-tions about problems your child’s teacher may be seeing in your child at school. You don’t have to share all of the details concern-ing the situation, but if we know there is some circumstance at home that might be weighing heavily on the mind of your child we can make necessary accommodations at school.

Child Custody Divorce and the impending custody issues can be a difficult

situation. In many cases mothers and fathers are granted equal rights where their children are concerned. In other cases one parent may be given custodial rights. In the latter case, a non-custodial parent may request copies of report cards, newsletters, and other information. This request should be made in writing each school year with your child’s new teacher. If the custodial parent has a court order that limits the rights of one parent in matters such as custody or visitation, the custodial parent should deliver a copy of the court order to the office of each school that his/her children attend. The parent should also discuss the matter with the children’s teachers to ensure the court order is fully un-derstood. Please remember that the school must follow the law in matters of custody and provide equal rights to each parent unless a court order is produced and instructs us to act otherwise.

Late Work Each school year we seem to encounter problems with upper

elementary students failing to complete homework assignments. This is an issue we would like to get resolved as early as possible. We are asking parents to please check their student’s school bag each night or simply ask him/her each night about homework that needs to be completed. Setting a regular time each night to com-plete homework is a good routine for families to use. If there are nights your child does not have homework you can use that time to do some reading together. Students need regular homework and bedtime routines to be successful at school. Also, commu-nicate regularly with your child’s teacher to make sure homework and other school responsibilities are getting fulfilled.

Dressing for the Weather As fall arrives it becomes more important for parents to make

sure that their children are coming to school properly dressed for the variance in temperatures. It is always best to make sure your child it dressed warmly for the morning temperatures. You can always layer clothing that can be taken off later or send other clothes to school for your child to wear in case the temperatures rise throughout the day. At this time of year it is especially impor-tant for children to wear shoes rather than flip-flops or sandals. Flip-flops and sandals don’t adequately protect the feet.

Extracurricular Activity ConductElementary students are constantly reminded at school about

behavior expectations at extracurricular events. Elementary students are reminded that they are present at the events to be a spectator. They are not to be running in the hallways or around the school grounds unattended. It is explained to students that they can use the restroom, get a drink of water, or visit the concession stand during breaks in the activity. Examples of such breaks are time outs, quarter breaks, halftime, or between games. The school asks that parents help by reinforcing these rules with their children. Students are told that they are not to be kicking balls, tackling, or playing rough during football games. They should also not participate in games or activities that distract oth-ers from watching the football games. Thank you for your help!

School Spirit Day Each Friday we like to show our Bulldog and Bullpup pride

by wearing clothing that represents our school. This can be Boyer Valley clothing or just attire that displays our school colors. Please encourage your child to display his/her school pride each Friday!

NWEA Assessments We will be conducting our NWEA assessments during the week

of October 16. NWEA assessments are used as a 2nd assess-ment with which to compare our Iowa Assessment results. Both assessments are important to gauge students’ progress.

Iowa Assessments The Iowa Assessments (formerly Iowa Tests of Basic Skills or

ITBS) will be given during the week of November 13. We feel that giving the assessments in the fall will allow us to get those results back earlier in order to guide our instructional decisions. It is especially important for students to be well-nourished and well-rested during the week of testing. Please discuss with your child the importance of doing his/her best work on these assessments. If our students do their best work it will give us a clearer picture of how we can help them.

ALTERNATE BUS ROUTES There may be certain times during the school year when we

need to run alternate RURAL bus routes (run on hard surface roads only). We would follow this policy when we have unfavor-able road conditions due to ice, snow, or mud; unsuitable for bus travel while okay for cars and pickups. The buses will also pick up students that live along those hard surfaced roads and at intersec-tions.

Whenever this policy is implemented, you will be notified by the media, or call the school 712-643-2251, for weather related messages.

ALTERNATE RURAL ROUTE SCHEDULE (HARD SURFACE ROADS ONLY)

NWEA Testing Students in Gr.2-11 will be

taking the NWEA tests during the week of October 16-20. (Northwest Evaluation Associa-tion). Students will be tested in the areas of math, reading, and language usage. Students will take the tests on their Chrome-books. The scores on these tests are very important and are reported to the state. We recommend students get a good night’s sleep and eat a good breakfast the day(s) of testing.

Iowa Assessments Our district uses Iowa Assessments as our primary form of

academic assessments that we report to the state. During the week of November 13-17, students in grades 2-11 will be taking the Iowa Assessments. Please talk with your student about the importance of doing their best on these tests.

PSAT The PSAT test will be offered for all 11th graders on October

11th. This test will help prepare students for the ACT test. Stu-dent results could qualify them for scholarship money, so it is very important that students do their very best on this test. Future Farmers of America Boyer Valley ChapterBoyer Valley FFA Reaches 52 MembersBy FFA Reporter Grace Reineke

We are well into the start of the new school year, and the Boyer Valley FFA chapter has reached 52 members! Being the most in chapter history, FFA advisor Rachel Stoberl says, “I am really impressed that we have reached over 50 members, and this is going to be our best year yet!” We encourage any high schooler that is enrolled in an ag class and would like to be in FFA to contact Mrs. Stoberl about joining.

Regarding chapter activities and events, on Sep 16, the livestock judging team of Josh Mordhorst, Dominic Fouts, Nicole Behrendt, and David Roberts who placed 8th individually, placed 4th overall at the Clay County Fair. Another team of Michael Seuntjens, Tanner Hoffman, and Jason Gorden also competed. Upcoming events for FFA members includes Greenhand fire up in Atlantic on Oct 11, National FFA Convention in Indianapolis at the end of October for selected members, and the chapter’s test plot committee is preparing for the upcoming harvest. The soils judging teams have been practicing and competed at the district contest on Sept. 26 in Griswold. The Beef Extravaganza teams also have started preparing and practicing for their competition in December. The plant science class has been working hard, and the initial phase of landscaping around the outside of the green-house will be breaking ground soon. Along with all of the exciting events and things taking place, the next chapter meetings will be Oct 30, and Nov 13.

BV TeamMates TailgateBy Sarah Malone, TeamMates Director, [email protected]

TeamMates hosted a tailgate party for mentors and mentees at the Sept. 15th football game. We took part in the spirit walk as the foot-ball team made their way to the field and then enjoyed tacos before cheering on the Bulldogs. Our next event will be the homecoming parade on Oct. 6th. All MS/HS mentees who are not involved in an-other organization are invited to walk with TeamMates in the parade. Elementary mentees will remain with their class.

Our chapter has been taking part in the Back to School Challenge. We have recruited 5 new mentors during this challenge! Our goal is to have 30 mentors by May 2018. We are 2 away from that goal. If you would like more information on becoming a mentor go to www.teammates.org, or email [email protected].

School Spirit Day will be Wednesday, October 25. Much like Jersey Day in the past, our community will use this day to raise some money for our local TeamMates chapter!

Here’s how it works: Participants can pay an amount of money ($1, $5, etc.) to wear their alma mater’s colors or gear to work. Have fun with it! Face paint, pom poms, jerseys, and all-out SCHOOL SPIRIT is always appreciated! We will be bringing infor-mation soon to local businesses about this event.

‘Ragnasplosion’ WORLD PREMIERE AT BVS

The BV Drama Department is taking on another play of mytho-logical proportions this fall: “The Norse Mythology Ragnasplosion” by Don Zolidis. Join the Norse Gods, Thor, Loki, Odin, Freya, and a cast of giants, monsters, and various talking animals on a wild and hilarious journey through some of the most insane myths ever devised by humans!

You won’t want to miss this performance. Not only is it hilari-ous, but Boyer Valley also has the privilege of being designated as the World Premiere Cast for this production! This is an outstanding, once in a lifetime opportunity for our students and an amazing honor for our school district. I strongly encourage everyone to come out and support our young thespians by seeing their finished product.

Performances will take place in the BVS Auditorium on Friday, November 3rd at 7:00pm and Sunday, November 5th at 2:00pm. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults. Advanced seating can be purchased by contacting Mr. Schauer ([email protected]) or the MS/HS Office (712-643-2251). Conces-sions will be available before the show and during intermission. Scripts are available during the performances for the hard of hearing.

BAND SEEKS INSTRUMENTS The Boyer Valley Band Program is in need of additional inven-

tory. If you have instruments sitting at home unused, please consider donating them to the school. Though students are encouraged to purchase or rent their own instruments, there are some families that can only participate in our band program if they can borrow a school owned instrument.

If you are interested in donating an instrument to the school, please contact Mr. Schauer BEFORE dropping it off. Some un-used instruments fall into disrepair and may require a significant amount of maintenance before they can be given to students. Instruments we are specifically looking for at this time include: tubas, bassoons, oboes, and saxophones.

Influenza (Flu) Vaccine (Inactivated or Recombinant): What you need to know

1 Why get vaccinated?Influenza (“flu”) is a contagious disease that spreads around the United States every year, usually between October and May.Flu is caused by influenza viruses, and is spread mainly by coughing, sneezing, and close contact.Anyone can get flu. Flu strikes suddenly and can last several days. Symptoms vary by age, but can include:• fever/chills• sore throat• muscle aches• fatigue• cough• headache • runny or stuffy noseFlu can also lead to pneumonia and blood infections, and cause diarrhea and seizures in children. If you have a medical condition, such as heart or lung disease, flu can make it worse.Flu is more dangerous for some people. Infants and young children, people 65 years of age and older, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions or a weakened immune system are at greatest risk. Each year thousands of people in the United States die from flu, and many more are hospitalized.Flu vaccine can:• keep you from getting flu,• make flu less severe if you do get it, and• keep you from spreading flu to your family and

other people.

2 Inactivated and recombinant flu vaccines

A dose of flu vaccine is recommended every flu season. Children 6 months through 8 years of age may need two doses during the same flu season. Everyone else needs only one dose each flu season. Some inactivated flu vaccines contain a very small amount of a mercury-based preservative called thimerosal. Studies have not shown thimerosal in vaccines to be harmful, but flu vaccines that do not contain thimerosal are available.

There is no live flu virus in flu shots. They cannot cause the flu. There are many flu viruses, and they are always changing. Each year a new flu vaccine is made to protect against three or four viruses that are likely to cause disease in the upcoming flu season. But even when the vaccine doesn’t exactly match these viruses, it may still provide some protection.Flu vaccine cannot prevent:• flu that is caused by a virus not covered by the vaccine,

or• illnesses that look like flu but are not.It takes about 2 weeks for protection to develop after vaccination, and protection lasts through the flu season.

3 Some people should not get this vaccine

Tell the person who is giving you the vaccine:• If you have any severe, life-threatening allergies.

If you ever had a life-threatening allergic reaction after a dose of flu vaccine, or have a severe allergy to any part of this vaccine, you may be advised not to get vaccinated. Most, but not all, types of flu vaccine contain a small amount of egg protein.

• If you ever had Guillain-Barré Syndrome (also called GBS).Some people with a history of GBS should not get this vaccine. This should be discussed with your doctor.

• If you are not feeling well. It is usually okay to get flu vaccine when you have a mild illness, but you might be asked to come back when you feel better.
