Ganger takes honours at Dunbible

Tweed Shire Council Ganger Wayne Lack last week cut the ribbon completing the official opening of the new Dunbible Creek Bridge at South Murwillumbah, which he and his gang built last year.

Wayne cut the ribbon after representatives of the Australian Government and Council together unveiled a plaque acknowledging the contribution of the Federal Government in funding the new bridge and outlining the contribution Mr Lack has made to Tweed Shire in his career as a ganger.

Dunbible resident and former federal Member for Richmond, the Honourable Doug Anthony AC,CH and his wife, Margot, were guests of honour at the opening ceremony. Mr and Mrs Anthony provided the land used as the site compound during construction. The Williams family provided some land required for the bridge build.

Also acknowledged at the opening was the late Josephine Nugent, who successfully campaigned for a shared user path to be included as part of the bridge design. Mrs Nugent was represented at the opening by her daughter Rebecca Nugent, who travelled from Sydney for the event.

The 47-metre bridge cost $2.1 million to build, with the Federal Government contributing $950,000 under its Bridge Renewal Programme.

The new concrete bridge has four-metre wide carriageways in both directions and a 2.7-metre wide pedestrian path and cycleway. It was built using sustainable construction methods and will last for at least 100 years.

Ganger Wayne Lack and his crew received Council’s 2015 Service and Productivity Excellence Award for Sustainability for the work they did in building the bridge. Their construction method saved Council $200,000. They also retained the old timber bridge deck and used it as a work platform to drive the 16-tonne concrete piles, removing the need to work at ground level and significantly reducing the impact on the waterway below.

Mr Lack, who turns 70 next week, has built 34 bridges in Tweed Shire over the past 17 years and plans to do two more this year before he retires.

In acknowledging his outstanding contribution to the shire, General Manager Troy Green described the worker as being like pure gold – highly valued and sought after.

“Wayne turns 70 next month, and every day he brings that same drive and commitment to his work that he did when he was a younger man,” said Mr Green. “He is a great role model, deserving of this honour.”

Residents Margot and Doug Anthony AC, CH congratulate Council Ganger Wayne Lack on the job he did in building the new Dunbible Creek Bridge, which now carries a plaque outlining his service to Council.

Ivan Valladares (left) with his three sons, Xon, Antonio and Lucas, the boys’ grandfather Tom McGlynn and Chris McGlynn.

Chris McGlynn played twin roles in the citizenship of her Guatemalan in-laws, who were among 39 people inducted as new citizens at the Tweed’s main Australia Day ceremony last week.

“My identical twin sister Annette couldn’t be here because she had to work, so I’m her stand-in,” she joked.

Chris was a very proud supporter when her brother-in-law Ivan Valladares and his three adopted sons – Antonio, Xon and Lucas – walked up on stage to accept their citizenship certificates at Kingscliff High School on 26 January.

Besides, Chris was at least partially responsible for Annette being in Guatemala, where she ultimately met her husband to be.

“We were travelling in Canada when it had a really cold snap, so Annette and I decided to drive south until we found warm weather,” Chris said.

“Mexico was also having unusually cold weather so we got all the way to Guatemala and that’s where Chris stayed for 25 years.”

Ivan said his family moved from their Central American homeland four years ago, keen to find an easier and more relaxed lifestyle after their home was flooded twice within a few years.

“We chose to settle in the Tweed because it has many similarities to our home town, Panajachel,” he said.

“The climates are very similar and the population of Cabarita Beach is comparable to Panajachel, which made it easier for our sons to settle in.”

Afghani story told at screeningTwo Afghan asylum seekers will share their stories at a free film screening in Murwillumbah to mark the Tweed’s declaration as a Refugee Welcome Zone.

A free matinee screening of the documentary Mary Meets Mohammad will be held at The Regent Cinema in Murwillumbah on 7 February at 2pm, where the declaration will be formalised.

In a short presentation before the screening, the asylum seekers will speak about their journey from Afghanistan and the challenges they faced.

Refugee Council of Australia Chairman of the Board Sonia Caton said these events and the Refugee Welcome Zone initiative were simple ways to show support.

“The symbolic nature of councils like the Tweed extending the hand of welcome cannot be under-estimated,” Ms Caton said.

“This will resonate deeply with asylum seekers and refugees who are frequently and wrongfully demonised for simply seeking safety.”

Some of the Tweed’s leading contributors were recognised when the 2015 Tweed Shire Australia Day Awards were presented as part of the main celebration and citizenship ceremony at Kingscliff High School. Pictured is Sporting Achievement Award winner Max Bryant, Betty Metcalf (15 Minutes of Fame – Arts and Cultural Achievement Award), Quota club representatives Sue Wickham and Barbara Lee (Community Event of the Year), David White (15 Minutes of Fame), Citizen of the Year Fay Gleave, Volunteer of the Year Kenneth ‘Mark’ Eglington, Australia Day Ambassador George Ellis, Young Achiever in Community Service Award winner Elizabeth Kirk, and 15 Minutes of Fame representatives Jenny Clarke, Marilyn White and Jenny Unwin (Arts and Cultural Achievement Award).
